This document discusses the importance of segregating and separating toxic and hazardous substances for safety during transportation, shipping, storage and handling. Proper segregation is important to protect citizens, the environment and workers from harm. International labeling systems use labels and placards to clearly identify hazards and indicate how substances should be separated based on their flammability, health, reactivity and other risks. Guidance documents provide charts to help determine how to properly segregate different hazard types when loading, storing or transporting materials.
