This document describes a study that analyzed 312 avatars used by adolescents in online chat rooms. The study found that most avatars were humanoid, with more female avatars than male. Female avatars commonly depicted coy gazes, nudity, exaggerated sexual characteristics. Male avatars depicted action figures, weapons, obscured eyes. Both genders used compound avatars. The interpretations suggest female avatars portrayed submission while male avatars depicted masculinity through action and anonymity.
