Types of business research
Research can be undertaken for two different purposes :
 Applied research
 Basic research
Applied Research
• One is to solve a current problem faced by the manager in the work
setting, demanding a timely solution. For example, a particular
product may not be selling well and the manager might want to find
the reasons for this in order to take corrective action.
• Such research is called Applied research
Basic Research
• The other is to generate a body of knowledge by trying to
comprehend how certain problems that occur in organizations can be
can be solved.
• This is called Basic research – also called fundamental or pure
research
Applied Research - examples
• The Apple Watch has become a bigger contributor to Apple's revenue
since it was first introduced in 2015.
• While Apple does not break out its specific revenue, the Watch is
under the category of wearables, which reported $39.8 billion in
revenue in fiscal 2023, down 3.4% from a year ago.
• First introduced in 2015, the unit sales of Apple Watches have grown
until 2022. At the end of the given period, Apple sold almost 54
million smartwatchs, up from just over 46 million Apple Watch unit
sales recorded in 2021.
• What should Apple do to increase its sales ?
Eg:
• China Huiyuan Juice Group Limited established in 1992 and
headquartered in Beijing, is the largest privately owned juice
producer in China. It is engaged in the manufacture and sales of juice
and other beverage products. Its products include fruit juice and
vegetable juice, nectars, bottled water, tea, and dairy drinks.
• On 3 September 2008, Atlantic Industries, a wholly owned subsidiary
of The Coca-Cola Company, agreed to buy China Huiyuan Juice for
HK$17.9 billion at HK$12.20 per share, three times more than its
closing price of HK$4.14 on the previous day. Its shares closed at
HK$10.94 on that day.
• What should Coco-Cola do ? Or China Huiyuan Juice Group do ?
Fundamental research - examples
• Right from her days as a clerical employee in a bank, Sarah had
observed that her colleagues, through extremely knowledgeable
about the nuances and intricacies of banking, were extremely very
little effort to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the bank in
the area of customer retentions and service.
• They took on the minimum amount of work load, availed themselves
of long tea and lunch breaks and seemed unmotivated in their
dealings with the customers and the management.
• That they were highly knowledgeable about banking policies and
practices was clearly evident from their mutual discussions about
these as they processed applications from customers.
• Sarah herself was very hardworking and enjoyed her work with the
customers.
• She always used to think what a huge waste it was for talented
employees to goof off rather than to work hard and enjoy their work.
• When she left the bank to do her Phd, the topic of the dissertation
she chose was ‘Job involvement’
• The conclusion of her investigation was that single most important
contributory factor to ‘job involvement’ is the fit or match between
the nature of the job and personality dispositions of the people
engaged in performing it.
• For example,
• challenging jobs allowed employees with high capabilities to get job-
involved
• And people-oriented employees got job involved with service
activities
• Sarah understood why highly intelligent bank employees could not
get job-involved or find job satisfaction in routine jobs that rarely
called for the use of their abilities
• Subsequently she joined another bank and she applied this
knowledge to solve problems of motivation, job satisfaction, job
involvement etc
Being knowledgeable about research and research methods
helps managers to:
1. Identify and effectively solve minor problems in the work setting
2. Know how to discriminate good from bad research
3. Appreciate and be constantly aware of the multiple influences and
multiple effects of factors impinging on a situation
4. Take calculated risks in decision making, knowing full well the
probabilities associated with the different possible outcomes
5. Prevent possible vested interests from exercising their influence in a
situation
6. Relate to hired researchers and consultants more effectively
7. Combine experience with scientific knowledge while making decisions
