A pictorial overview of Central Monrovia
Introduction
This is a survey conducted on “Assessing vulnerability of inhabitants in Monrovia”
particularly in the area of service delivery. Our group was given the responsibility of
conducting survey in Central Monrovia. We focused on the following Service delivery
areas; access to safe drinking water, electricity, transportation, health care and
education.
In order to access the level of vulnerability of inhabitants in central Monrovia, we
developed a questionnaire that was used as a working tool for the survey. The group
could not concentrate on the entire population of Central Monrovia due to the following
limitations:
Time – we did not have sufficient time for adequate data collection and thorough
analysis of the study. The fact is that we have to this work together with academic work.
Finances: - this project was financed solely by funds contributed by each member of this
group.
Confidentiality: - the researcher anticipated the uncooperativeness and bias of the
respondents in disclosing their personal information like their source of income and
monthly income. There was a tendency of inflating or understating certain figures or
giving wrong information in order to probably impress the researcher.
HISTORICAL OVERVIEW OF CENTRAL MONROVIA
The city of Monrovia consists of several districts, spread across the Mesurado
peninsula, with the greater Metropolitan area encircling the marshy Mesurado River’s
mouth. The historic downtown, centered on Broad Street, is at the very end of the
peninsula, with the major market district, Waterside, immediately to the north, facing
the city's large natural harbor. Northwest of Waterside is the large, low-income West
Point community. To the west/southwest of downtown lie Mamba Point, traditionally
the city's principal diplomatic quarter, and home to the Embassies of the United States
and United Kingdom as well as the European Union Delegation. South of the city
center is Capitol Hill, where the major institutions of national government, including
the Legislature, Temple of Justice and the Executive Mansion, are located.

CONCLUSION
Inferring from the findings of this study as discussed above, the vulnerability of
the inhabitants of Central Monrovia, in terms of service delivery is high or low
depending on the community being assessed. It was observed that services are
being delivered but not sufficiently and equally distributed among various
communities within central Monrovia.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the survey conduct, the group would however want make the following
recommendations:
1. Free health care services should be available for all
2. The establishment of public schools within all communities to enable access
to affordable education
3. Safe drinking water should be made available to all
