CONGRATUALTIONS TO SOME OF OUR NEWEST CITIZENS
Featured below are three students enrolled in Mr. Dan Ontell’s Citizenship class who recently
became United States citizens. Mr. Ontell’s class is held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings
from 5:45-9pm at Holy Cross Church. Mr. David Reinaga also teaches Citizenship on Tuesday
evening from 5:45-9pm at Carver Middle School and on Friday evenings from 5:30-8:30pm at
Jefferson High School.
Mr. Victor Garcia, pictured below with his wife and daughter, fulfilled a lifelong dream to
become a citizen of the United States in March of this year. Mr. Garcia came to the U.S. from
Mexico and through determination and perseverance passed the USCIS Citizenship interview on
his second attempt.
Ms. Miriam Maldonado became a U.S. citizen in April, 2011. She is also from Mexico and plans to
continue studying English with us and hopefully earn her high school diploma. She is pictured
below with Mr. Ontell and two of her three children.
2. Ms. Maria Magdalena Montoya, better known as Maggy, became a U.S. citizen in April this year.
She is also studying to be a daycare provider.

teacher and advisor, for putting the time and effort in, to create such a nice site for JCAS.
DISTANCE LEARNING FOR ESL STUDENTS
Distance Learning DVDs and booklets for levels 1-5 are available for students to check out from
the Jefferson, Carver, Santee, and Adams sites. There is a one time refundable deposit of
$5.00 and a $1.00 charge for each booklet. Please take advantage of this great opportunity to
supplement your ESL class. Please see Ms. Helen Wong/Distance Learning Coordinator.
ESL STUDENTS
Just three more weeks left to take advantage of our Distance Learning program. You can pick
up packets to take home from the main office. Ask your teacher for more details.
GRADUATION MEETING AND REHEARSAL
The 6th and final meeting of Jefferson graduates will be held on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at
8pm in the Library at Jefferson High School. Rehearsal for graduation speakers is Monday,
June 13, 2011. Rehearsal for all graduates is Tuesday, June 14, 2011. Both rehearsals will be at
6pm in the auditorium. All potential graduates must attend.

to learning with JCAS.
CBET LOGS DUE
CBET Tutoring Logs for all ESL classes are due in the main office on Thursday, June 9, 2011. It
is critical that all logs be completed accurately and timely. Please include SIS numbers,
signatures, totaled hours, and identify specific “other activities”. Refer to the memo in your
mailbox for more detail.
GRADUATION ATTENDANCE
The JCAS 2011 graduation ceremony will be held on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at 7pm in the
Jefferson High School Auditorium. Classes at Santee and Carver that will be attending should
be mindful of the bus pick up times for students. Check with your site administrator if you any
questions.
3. ESL PROMOTIONAL TESTING
ESL promotional testing and pre-registration for the summer will take place the week of June
20, 2011. You can pick up materials in the main office Monday, June 20, 2011. All ESL classes
will test.
JCAS SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Please don’t miss your opportunity to donate to the JCAS Scholarship fund for this year. No
donation is too small and every donation will help a student. Make checks payable to
JEFFERSON CAS FACULTY SCHOLARSHIP FUND. THANK YOU. Yes, cash is always accepted
as well.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT POLICY-
The LAUSD is committed to maintaining a working and learning environment that is free from
harassment of any sort. Sexual harassment is a form of discrimination that will not be
tolerated. Examples of sexual harassment include: suggestive, derogatory or vulgar comments,
sexual innuendos of slurs, unwanted sexual advances, displays of sexually suggestive objects,
picture, etc., obscene gestures, blocking of normal movement, assault, or threats. Any student
or employee of the district who believes that he or she has been a victim of sexual
harassment shall bring the problem to the attention of the site administrator. Complaints will
be investigated in a way that respects the privacy of the parties concerned. For more details
