3. Ini, Depan dan Lepas
In Malay, we use the words ‘ini’, ‘depan’ and ‘lepas’ to
describe current, past and next month, year or time.
Bulan lepas Bulan ini Bulan depan
Last month This month Next month
Literal translation
Tahun = Year
Ini = This

4. TAHUN (Year)
Anda ingat bagaimana menyebut nombor dalam Bahasa Melayu?
Do you remember how to say the numbers in Malay?
Cara menyebut tahun dalam Bahasa Melayu sama dengan cara
menyebut nombor.
The way to say a particular year is the same as how you would say the
number.
CUBA SEBUT INI (TRY TO SAY THESE):
Tahun lepas tahun 2012.
Tahun ini tahun 2013.
Tahun depan tahun 2014.

5. TAHUN (Year)
In English, sometimes you say the year in an easier way, for example:
YEAR 1999: Can be said as Year Nineteen-Ninety-Nine
Where the 2 digits are said separately (19 and 99)
YEAR 2013: Year Twenty-Thirteen (20 and 13)
In Malay, this is also the way for the years before year 2000. For example:
Tahun 1999 – Tahun sembilan-belas, sembilan-puluh-sembilan (19+99)
BUT it is unusual to say them this way after the year 2000, for example:
It is unusual to say Tahun 2013 as Tahun dua-puluh, tiga-belas (20+13). We
say it as Tahun-dua-ribu-tiga-belas.
HOWEVER,
Our 4th Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamed has famously coined
Vision 2020* as Wawasan 2020 (dua-puluh, dua-puluh) and thus, I foresee
that after the year 2020, we will say the year using this way again.
*Vision 2020 is a governmental plan that strive at making Malaysia a self-sufficient industrialized nation
nation by the year 2020.

Use what we have learnt to ask and answer questions with your
friends. You may:
• Ask using the words Bila (When), Apa (What) and Berapa (How
much/how many)
• Ask about yesterday, today, tomorrow….etc.
• Ask about Hari (day), Bulan (month) and Tahun (year)
• Ask about how do you say the years and months’ names in Malay.
• Ask about the present, past and future months and years.

Bulan lepas bulan berapa? (What month was last month?)
