I-Series, Top Five Reasons… Accelerate Application Development Due to the difficultly & time to program apps on System i many people have apps running elsewhere (MSFT, Linux) that call data from System i and the results are relayed back to app on MSFT/Linux which is then relayed in Web format. Plan is to run these apps directly on System i to speed up the app. Consolidation Move apps running on other boxesto System i to increase stability and decrease expenses/costs. Modernization Web-enabling green screen applications -- much easier to do with PHP as compared to RPG. New app development Many companies are planning to create new apps to run directly on System i --entire gamut: apps for intranet, reporting, websites, extranets, business. Leveraging pre-written scripts/programs Thousands of available scripts, community PHP apps, commercial and open source native on System i box . Over 3000 registrants and customer downloads since April 2006!
Polling question, and hand off to John Coggeshall Poll: What the the current OS for the I5 system that you use for application or web development? % of attendees using V5R4 vs V5R3 vs any OS prior V5R2 and before… Poll 2: How much experience do you have with developing applications using PHP? Multiple choice: Options: a] none, b] some c] medium experience d] advanced e] Zend Certified Engineer (ZCE)
What This Means for You Better, faster, more productive development / deployment of web applications Open, collaborative playing-field New opportunities for all – large and small More innovation, more rapid development Leverage from the community to innovate

Editor's Notes

  • #2 DORON: Hello and welcome, everyone, to the PHP Conference! We are very excited to be here, and we are VERY excited to have you here, too! You will be hearing from me a bit later in this keynote, but right now, I want to introduce my partners and dear friends, Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans…. Zeev and Andi enter Since they are both too modest to boast about themselves, I will do it for them. Doron’s intro to follow.. Zeev and Andi met at the Technion, and started collaborating on PHP 3.0 as a project for University Then they both joined the Army. Andi quickly became a captain We guess that Zeev went into Army Intelligence, because he never told anyone what he did! It’s thanks to Zeev’s mother, that I met Zeev and Andi After the Army, Zeev’s mother was worried about his career, and I was asked to talk to them.. “ Come back when you have half a million web sites” They came back one month later! That’s when I realized the power of PHP, and we formed the company
