This project proposal aims to build a classifier to identify groundwater types in Sri Lanka. It will analyze existing groundwater data collected across Sri Lanka, except the Northern region, and classify the types using clustering methods. The proposal will study an existing 1985 study by C.B. Dissanayake and S.V.R. Weerasooriya that identified four main groundwater types - calcium, magnesium, sodium/potassium, and non-dominant cation - using Piper diagrams. It will build a neural network classifier and apply it to new groundwater data collected in the Jaffna Peninsula over 10 weeks.
