This document provides an overview of building a virtual pet game using JavaScript. It introduces JavaScript concepts like variables, objects, functions, and conditional statements. It outlines the goals of building a functional pet game to practice programming skills and covers specific coding challenges like adding properties to a pet object and writing functions to feed and exercise the pet. The document also provides context on JavaScript and programming in general.
Session from ILUG 2008, see http://www.ilug2008.org for details
Description:
Do you have objections to objects?
Haven't you visited classes about classes?
Is abstraction still too abstract for you?
Don't you use methodic methods and proper properties?
Then come to this introductory session about object-oriented programming (OOP) in LotusScript, where you can learn:
- why delegation might be better then inheritance,
- why hiding information can be helpful sometimes and
- how you can use polymorphism to teach old dogs new tricks.
Speaking 'Development Language' (Or, how to get your hands dirty with technic...Julie Meloni
Slides from an internal workshop at George Washington University Library on 12 June 2012. The goal of this workshop was to increase the number of people who can “work” on technical issues in the library. Topics were grouped into three main parts: "Development Lifecycle & Where You Fit In", "Computer Programming Basics", and "Python in Particular".

LESSON 3B. FOCUS: FOR LOOPS, NESTED LOOPS, TASKS AND CHALLENGES.
Introduction to, with examples, For loops. Challenges and tasks included with solutions (predict the output). Compare ‘while’ and ‘for’ loops. Use the break statement and explore how it works in different scenarios. Learn about Nested Loops. Learn about the need for initialisation (set starting value). Create your own for loops. Create the beginnings of an arithmetic quiz using a random function and for loops. Big ideas discussion: Is the universe digital. A program? Introducing Gottfried Leibniz and Konrad Zuse. Includes a suggested videos, ‘Big ideas’ discussion, and HW/research projects section.
What does OOP stand for?
When Object Oriented Programming(OOP) is taught so extensively, do computer programmers, specifically within games development, realise what it's possibly doing to productivity and performance? I explain my own view from experience in personal projects and professional work.
This talk was given to the Edinburgh meet of IGDA Scotland, on 2011/07/27.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The simplified electron and muon model, Oscillating Spacetime: The Foundation...RitikBhardwaj56
Discover the Simplified Electron and Muon Model: A New Wave-Based Approach to Understanding Particles delves into a groundbreaking theory that presents electrons and muons as rotating soliton waves within oscillating spacetime. Geared towards students, researchers, and science buffs, this book breaks down complex ideas into simple explanations. It covers topics such as electron waves, temporal dynamics, and the implications of this model on particle physics. With clear illustrations and easy-to-follow explanations, readers will gain a new outlook on the universe's fundamental nature.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

How to Build a Module in Odoo 17 Using the Scaffold MethodCeline George
Odoo provides an option for creating a module by using a single line command. By using this command the user can make a whole structure of a module. It is very easy for a beginner to make a module. There is no need to make each file manually. This slide will show how to create a module using the scaffold method.

• Do you have an idea that you want to build?
• Do you want to work better with developers?
5. What’s your programming background?
• First lines of code will be written tonight?
• Been self teaching for 1-3 months?
• Been at this for 3+ months
6. Goals
• Build a functional game – emphasis on build
• Practice solving problems like real developers
• Learn JavaScript fundamentals as we use them
• Pick up a touch of jQuery
• Homework!
8. Programming is a process
1. Defining problems
2. Finding solutions to those problems
3. Implementing those solutions in a language your
computer can understand
11. Brief history of Javascript
• Written by Brendan Eich in 1995 for Netscape
• Initial version written in 10 days
• Completely unrelated to Java, named as a marketing
stunt because Java was “hot” at the time
• Continues to evolve under guidance of ECMA
International, driven by browser makers
12. Javascript today
• Only programming language to become standard in browsers
• Huge community of developers, libraries and frameworks
• Fairly easy syntax, though quirky
• Lots of job opportunities
13. What are we going to build?
We’re going to build a virtual pet (like a tomigachi). In
our initial version, we’ll be able to change our pet’s
settings and feed our pet
14. Note on where to write you code
When working as a programmer, you’ll use a text editor
or an “Integrated Development Environment” (IDE).
Tonight we’re using JSBin so we can skip setup, see
results immediately and easily share code
16. Javascript 101 — Variables
• A variable is a name that is attached to a value
• Gives us a shorthand way to refer to it elsewhere
• Can be string, number, boolean, objects, and arrays…
var firstVariable = “hello world”;
17. Javascript 101: Objects
• Data structure with a “key” and a “value”
• Define an object by writing an opening curly branch and a
closed curly brace
• The “key” is always a string, “value” can by any anything*
• Keys and value pairs are separated by commas
• Can have many different kinds of values in the same object
with as many key-value pairs are you'd like
var pet = { “name”: “Fluffy”, “age”: 10 }
18. Javascript 101: Objects
• To add an item to an object: pet[‘weight’] = 5
• To retrieve name of pet: pet.name or pet[‘name’]
var pet = { “name”: “Fluffy”, “age”: 10 }
19. Quick challenge
• In a new JSBin file, create an object with a name “me”
• Initialize the object with a key “name” and provide your full
name as the value
• Initialize the object with a key “age” with your age as a value
• Feel free to use the example above :)
var pet = { “name”: “Fluffy”, “age”: 10 }
21. Challenge
• Add a name for your pet
• Add an age & weight to your pet object
• Add a “photo” (we’ve given some options at the top)
• Retrieve the name of your pet (use the console)
22. Javascript Functions
function doSomething () {
alert(“it’s done”);
};
doSomething();
A function lets you separate your code into bite-sized
pieces which you can use over again.
When you write a function to use later, you are
“declaring” it. When you use (or run) that function you
are “calling” it.
23. Javascript Functions — Parameters and Return
function addTwoNumbers (numberOne, numberTwo) {
return numberOne + numberTwo;
};
addTwoNumbers(2, 3);
•We sometimes pass a parameter and return a value.
Parameters let us call a function multiple times with
different inputs in order to get different outputs.
•return sends back a value to wherever the function
was called from
24. Javascript If/Else Statements
• Enables program to do different things based on conditions
• You can use if, else if or else
• If the statement in parentheses is true, it will execute that block
• Otherwise the program will move to the next block
if (turn == “O”) {
console.log(“It’s O’s turn”);
} else if (turn == “X”) {
console.log(“It’s X’s turn”);
} else {
console.log(“It’s no one’s turn”);
}
25. Challenge
• Complete the feed(pet) function in the starter code
• When your pet is hungry, you should print out to the console
(console.log) a statement saying your put is full
• Change your pet’s hunger from true to false
26. Homework
•Write a function called “exercise” which reduces
your pet’s weight
•Write a function that returns your pet’s bio
27. General learning tips for coding
• Google is your friend
• Practice at the edge of your abilities
• Ignore the hot new thing — depth matters more than breadth
