Business Cards
 Hand them out to people you made a connection with
 Write on them right away – something that will help you
remember the connection
 When you get back to your room, respond to the most
urgent ones immediately
 Establish a system for sorting the cards you receive right
away
 Keep the rest in a safe place to contact after the
conference

Introductions
 First listen and learn about the other person
 Learn about the other person’s expertise
 Don’t pretend to be an expert about things you
don’t know!
 Have a concise statement about what you do; adjust
it to what you learned about the other person
 Share generously – resources, referrals, ideas
 Know when and how to walk away politely

 Visit/meet as many chapters and divisions as you can

Roles Newbie  Be inquisitive!  Be willing to share your experiences  Share your goals  Come to the Wrap-up session Buddy  Be available for questions  Have a meal together  Go to a session together  Say hello in the hallways  If available, come to the Wrap-up session Anyone can be a Newbie or a Buddy. If it’s not working out, it’s okay to change Buddies, even if they didn’t come to this session.

6. Helpful Tips: Logistics  Set up your conference app and profile  Explore the Exhibit Hall at least twice  Watch your stuff  Travel light – notebook, pen, phone  How to use your name badge

7. Session Etiquette and Sanity Tips  It’s okay to leave during the add/drop period  It’s okay to ask questions – at the end  Take a break for at least one session  How should I decide what sessions to go to?

8. What is networking? It is: It isn’t:  Self-centered  Manipulative  Sales pitch first  Elevator pitch with every handshake  Connecting  Making friends  Helping others  Building teams  A learned skill

When does networking really happen?  Sharing notes with your neighbor  At lunch  Connecting with someone who said something interesting  Thanking someone for their contributions to a listserv  Recommending a colleague  Connecting in person with a Twitter or LinkedIn contact  … All the time!

Business Cards  Hand them out to people you made a connection with  Write on them right away – something that will help you remember the connection  When you get back to your room, respond to the most urgent ones immediately  Establish a system for sorting the cards you receive right away  Keep the rest in a safe place to contact after the conference

Introductions  First listen and learn about the other person  Learn about the other person’s expertise  Don’t pretend to be an expert about things you don’t know!  Have a concise statement about what you do; adjust it to what you learned about the other person  Share generously – resources, referrals, ideas  Know when and how to walk away politely

Passports  Passports are your way to connect to ATA after the conference  Visit/meet as many chapters and divisions as you can and collect stickers or signatures from a representative of each one  The top three most-filled passports will receive a prize at the Wrap-up session (various language resources)  (Leadership council members and board members are excluded from the contest)

14. It’s almost your turn! Find your newbie/buddy and:  Introduce yourselves  Share contact information (write it on your passport)  Share one personal goal for the conference  Schedule a time to meet during the conference (one meal and one session)  Now go!
