Buckingham Palace has been the London residence of the British monarch since 1837. It began as a home for the Duke of Buckingham in 1702 and was later purchased by King George III in 1761. Queen Victoria was the first monarch to reside there permanently. Today it serves as the official residence of Queen Elizabeth II and houses over 600 rooms. Buckingham Palace welcomes visitors to tour its 19 state rooms each summer and fall.
