Starlight Express
Starlight express is a rock musical that follows a dream of a child in which his
toy train set comes to life. The trains are portrayed by actors on roller skates and
the plot of the story is based around a group of trains that are racing to become
the fastest train in the world. In the end the unlikely winner rusty triumphs
winning the title and the love of the observation car pearl. The musical was
composed byAndrew Lloyd Webber, directed by Trevor Nunn and the lyricist
was Richard Stilgoe. The play was first shown in 1984 in LondonWest End.
The show came about because in the 1970s, Lloyd Webberplanned to adapt
Rev W. Awdrys railways series books ofThomas the tank engine. But Awdry
refused becausehe believed that Andrew wanted 2too much freedom with the
characters. This is when Lloyd Webber re-convinced Awdry by using a
Cinderella story theme.

Producer: a personresponsible for the financial and managerial aspects of the
making of a film or broadcastorfor staging a play, opera, etc. They oversee
everything from conception to completion and are also involved in marketing
and distribution. Some of their role includes raising funds, reading, assessing
and researching scripts, building and developing a network of contacts,
controlling the budget and allocating resources, hiring staff, organising
rehearsals, supervising the progress and holding regular meetings with the
director and various members of crew to ensure everything is running smooth.
Director: a director has the responsibility of supervising all actors and other
staff in the play. The have to ensure they create a practical and creative
interpretation of the play, whilst also taking into accountbudget and any other
constrains of the production. They are involved from design and pre
performance proses including rehearsals, right up until the final performance.
They work closely with the producer, performers and creativity and production
team. Typical task for a director include adapting the script to fit their vision of
the production, breaking down the scrip to explore the possible ideas within it,
holding auditions and selecting actors, designers and musicians, managing time,
attending production meetings and organising rehearsals.
Musical director: the person responsible for the musical aspects of a
performance or production, typically the conductoror leader of a music group.
They are in charge of holding auditions for specified musicians needed and have
to ensure that they are within the musical budget. A musical director is expected
to teach songs, arrange vocal harmonies, and conduct casts and bands during
performances. The need to be at performances early to provide a vocal warm up
and relay advice/note taken from the previous show.
Choreographer: the person arranging dance movements for performance. They
have to work alongside the producer, costume designer, musical and creative
directors to provide a practical but effective routine then fits with music, themes
and settings of the performance. As a choreographer you are expected to
develop ideas to create a finished performance. The have to audition dancers
and then teach and rehears each routine with them, choreographers are also
expected to record the dances using a notation system.
Technical manager/director: Responsible for all aspects of the technical
operation within a production. Expected to provide technical expertise to all
crew members and is responsible for ensuring an efficient and safe use of
resources. The must have high knowledge and experience in technical
production and must be able to plan all the technical operations for the
production within budget. Other tasks for a technical director include making
sure operations are safe and within current legislation, to lead and assist with
pre rigging, get ins and get outs, to supervise and direct backstage work (such as
using mikes) and to ensure all equipment is properly maintained and working,
to regular test and that replacements are ordered when needed.
DSM: the deputy stage manager has a varied role, partly in backstage crew and
partly to do with actors and directors. They have to attend every rehearsal and
performance. They have to guide the actors through all the moves and actions
they make and record them in the script, making sure they record any changes
made throughout the play. When the cast moves to rehearsing on stage the DSM
has to then work alongside the director and technical team and record the timing
of all the cues. They have to make sure that during the dress rehearsal it runs
smoothly; that everything happens at the right moment. On the performance
nights the DSM has to wait for permission from the stage manager that
everyone is ready to start the performance. They have to follow the script to cue
in the lighting changes, sound effects, scene changes and telling the actors when
their entrances are approaching.
ASM: An assistant stage manager assist the production stage manager in all of
their responsibilities. This can include attending meetings, helping run
rehearsals and ensuring smooth running of the performance. Specific tasks of
ASM include taping out the floorplan, handing out scripts and pulling rehearsal
props and furniture before rehearsals. They can be asked to sweep rehearsal
places, run fly lines and contactlate members of crews. The ASM has to be "on
book", which means following the script when actors are meant to be off script.
After rehearsals the assistant stage manager has the job of helping the SM put
everything away and make sure the facility is locked up.
