4Brookfield Global Integrated Solutions Corporate Responsibility Report 2015
It is with great pride and enthusiasm that we present our 2015 Report on Sustainability for
Brookfield Global Integrated Solutions (Brookfield GIS) Canada. This report summarizes our
significant economic, environmental, and social impacts throughout the 2015 fiscal year, as well
as the strategies and goals for the organization moving forward.
At Brookfield GIS, we believe sustainable practices
are crucial to assisting in the global effort to slow
and eventually reverse climate change. This is
why we remain focused on the implementation of
technologies and programs which:
●● Decrease energy use
●● Decrease greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
●● Reduce water use
●● Divert and decrease waste
These technologies and programs are implemented
throughout our own offices and our client’s portfolios.
We strive to be a role model for sustainability as we
continue our role as leaders in the corporate real
estate management industry.
Promoting awareness of sustainable business
practices is a key priority for Brookfield GIS. As our
sustainability technologies and programs are proven
and shown to also drive significant operational
cost reductions, we are able to implement
them throughout our clients’ portfolios. These
technologies and programs are also leveraged
throughout Brookfield Asset Management Inc’s
(Brookfield) 378 million square foot managed real
estate portfolio as well as their affiliated companies.
LEED™, WELL®, and BOMA are a few of the key
standards we use as benchmarks for sustainable
building practices. Among our suppliers, sustainable
and environmentally friendly technologies and
business practices are encouraged, rewarded
and implemented across an entire portfolio. We
believe these actions support and encourage the
sustainability goals of our clients and suppliers within
their respective industries.
Looking to the long-term, we will continue to
expand our support in the development of market

opportunities for Canadian technologies focused
on increasing energy efficiency, reducing GHG
emissions, and driving responsible water and waste
use. Over 2014-2015, various levels of government
throughout Canada have made transitional shifts
and are now aligned on energy-related policies.
We look forward to continuing to work with all
levels of government to encourage the creation and
implementation of programs that support the uptake
of sustainability in the corporate real estate sector.
We will also continue to maintain and enhance our
commitment to social well-being, including the
support of charities within our local communities.
These include The Canadian Breast Cancer
Foundation, President’s Choice Children’s Charity, the
Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, Cam’s Kids
and SickKids Foundation, to name a few.
Our people remain a top priority, and continuously
evaluating our programs to assist in meeting
their changing needs will remain a focus. Rolling
out Career Pathing programs and Training and
Development for Leaders will be among the new
programs.
2015 was yet another benchmark year
for Brookfield GIS.
Across our Canadian offices in 2015, we decreased
our building energy intensity by 2 per cent,
decreased our building water intensity by 15 per
cent, and also decreased our GHG emissions per
capita by 31 per cent. Once again, we diverted 100
per cent of our waste from landfills and increased
the percentage of our waste diverted to recycling
by 5.8 per cent. Our Energy and Sustainability
team, our internal Green Team committee, and the
implementation of new technologies and programs
drove these significant reductions.
The Brookfield GIS team had extensive growth in
2015, with 1,809 new team members hired and 264
returning team members. Led by our 11 Corporate
Social Responsibility committees, our team
members raised over $362,000 for charities and local
community groups. We were also very thrilled to
announce the formation of our internal Diversity and
Inclusiveness Committee, which will further energize
and elevate our performance as a team.
We welcomed new clients with the addition of
numerous Canadian and global leaders in the
financial, utilities and life sciences sectors. Our
managed spend in Canada for the fiscal year was
$2.4 billion across 150 million square feet of real
estate. We are very proud to have had a year of
double-digit growth for the ninth consecutive year.
We are committed to being leaders in the corporate
real estate management industry as we continue
to lead by example for our clients, shareholders,
suppliers, team members, and the industry.
Thank you all for caring!

We hope our leadership in this aspect of business
operations will inspire our clients, shareholders,
suppliers, competitors, and other industries to follow.
Our stakeholders include our team members, clients, shareholders, suppliers, and

AT A GLANCEECONOMIC
TEAM MEMBER BENEFITS
We provide our team members with a
comprehensive flex health benefit package,
pension program, and optional TSFA program.
The health benefit package provides team
members with flex dollars of three per cent of
their salary, plus a baseline amount of $1,950
- $4,750, depending on their family size. In
addition, team members get a corporate rate
at Goodlife Fitness and the health and wellness
benefit allows our team members to purchase
items such as bicycles, gym memberships and
other fitness-related items to encourage overall
team member health and wellness.
Brookfield GIS also matches all team member
contributions annually to his or her pension plan.
In 2015, we matched a total of $4.2 million to
team member pensions.
ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE
In 2015, we added a number of new clients to
our portfolio, including Canadian leaders in
the financial, utilities and life sciences sectors.
The managed spend for all our clients was $2.4
billion, which includes both agency and principal
spend. As we added 1,809 new team members
and promoted 241, our payroll reached in excess
of $250 million.
Through our tuition assistance program, our
team members received a total of $284,100 in
compensation for their academic studies. We
will continue to encourage our team members
to further their professional development in a

SUSTAINABLE PROCUREMENT
Throughout 2015, we continued to enhance
and expand our Sustainable Sourcing Strategy
Program. We require all of our suppliers to
use environmentally-friendly products where
available, implement and use a recycling
program, and encourage the reuse of materials
when possible. When going to market, our
Requests for Proposals (RFPs) require interested
proponents to address their corporate
sustainability. This is important for selecting a
successful proponent.
Our procurement and sourcing team has
implemented an electronic signing tool for all
service contracts that are signed. Eight-hundred
e-signatures have been captured with this tool
thus far. That's a savings of approximately 80,000
pieces of paper or 10 trees. As this initiative has
been such a success, we plan to implement
the tool beyond our procurement and sourcing
team and into other departments across our
organization.

Our procurement and sourcing team has
continued to work with the Canadian Aboriginal

Throughout 2015, we continued to pursue
deeper, richer, value-add relationships with
clients that resulted in innovative ways to deliver
value and reduce cost. As well, by focusing on
achieving strategic outcomes with our service
providers and fostering transparent relationships,
we have achieved value and reduced cost.
Commitment to the environment continues
to remain a key criteria for selecting service
providers and suppliers.
Moving forward, we will continue to look for
opportunities where we can deploy the vested
approach.
Looking into 2016, we plan to work with and help
Canadian-based clean-tech and smart building
technology companies grow. Our portfolio size,
technical experience and range of managed

SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGYENVIRONMENT
We believe that future generations deserve to see the incredible natural wonders our earth has provided
to us. Unfortunately, climate change caused by GHG emissions, global practices of energy and water
consumption, and waste production mean that the reality of this happening is at risk.
By continuing to set an example in the corporate real estate industry on the importance of sustainable
business practices, we hope we can help mitigate the effects of climate change by reducing our own and our
client's environmental footprints. Every day, Brookfield GIS makes decisions that minimize our impact on the
environment and community, and we encourage our team members to apply those principals in their daily life.
Our commitment to sustainability is guided by our President and CEO, Gord Hicks. In 2015, Corporate Knights
awarded Gord with the Greenest Chief Executive in Canada Award for being committed to environmental
sustainability. His leadership has guided our efforts in minimizing the impact our clients, suppliers and team
members have on the environment; as well as advocating for environmental stewardship across our industry.
We continue to work closely with all levels of government to encourage the implementation of programs that
encourage the uptake of sustainable business practices. By providing innovative solutions and programs that
reduce energy, decrease water consumption, and decrease and divert waste across our client’s portfolio, we
hope to assist in preserving the environment for future generations of Canadians.
SUSTAINABILITY AT THE
INNOVATION CENTRE
In 2014, we moved our head office to a new
location in Markham, Ontario known as the
Innovation Centre. This space was designed
for increased flexibility and workplace mobility,
and encourage collaboration and the sharing
of ideas among team members, suppliers and
clients.
The Innovation Centre is used to research,
develop and showcase leading workplace
innovations that can be instituted in other offices,
as well as foster team member education
and workplace well-being. It also serves as a
testing ground for sustainability initiatives that
are geared toward reducing the operational
impacts of facilities as well as demonstrating the
sustainable procurement practices that are an
integral part of how we perform business.
During 2015, we completed the move to our
new office space and implemented various
sustainable initiatives including:
●● A zero-waste program, which uses
centralized, four-stream receptacles to
differentiate between waste, organics,
paper, and plastics.
●● A writing instrument collection and
recycling program initiated collaboratively
with Terra Cycle.
●● Replaced 300 lighting fixtures with Philips
LED T8 light bulbs, a new high-efficient
technology that has reduced the power
draw of each fixture from 74 to 34 watts.
11Brookfield Global Integrated Solutions Corporate Responsibility Report 2015
SMART COMMUTE
Metrolinx's Smart Commute program conducted
a baseline survey of our team member
commuting practices in 2012 and recently
conducted a follow-up survey in 2015. Over
those three years, we are pleased to note that
our team member’s single occupant vehicle
(SOV) use decreased by 6.5 per cent, public
transit use increased by 5.7 per cent, and
telework increased by 5.7 per cent, with a slight
increase in cycling and walking. We will continue
to educate and work with our team members to
encourage these positive trends.
LEED™ & WELL®
Brookfield GIS has been working on LEED™
certification projects for a number of years and
is an active sponsor and partner of the Canada
Green Building Council (CaGBC). Leading up to
2015, many of the projects we completed were
LEED™ Existing Buildings certified; this past
year, Brookfield GIS was proud to complete
our first LEED™ New Construction project. We
look forward to working with our clients to
implement the WELL Building Standard®, which
is the world's first building standard focused
exclusively on human health and wellness.
TEAM MEMBER ENGAGEMENT
Our Green Team and 11 regional Corporate
Responsibility committees that are established
across Canada continued to lead on various
corporate social responsibility fronts. Team
members across Canada participated in Green
Team-led events such as the WWF Polar Bear
Dip and CN Tower Climb, while the Corporate
Responsibility committees organized various
events such as charity casinos and golf
tournaments.
CLIMATE REALITY LEADERS
Our President and CEO continued to work
closely with the Climate Reality Project Canada.
Gord, a Certified Canadian Presenter for the
organization and board member since 2009,
was a guest speaker at the July 2015 Climate
Reality Leaders event. Gord’s speech provided
inspiration, leadership and addressed how the
building sector will play an important role in
reducing our environmental footprint. Brookfield
GIS matched all donations at the event up to
$10,000, helping to raise awareness for the
event.
GORD TALKS
We also continued our “Gord Talks” series
of internal speaking events inspired by our
President and CEO. The series has sparked
innovative thinking and team member
engagement between Brookfield GIS’ strategic
partners, clients, suppliers and team members
alike. These sessions allow individuals to speak
on topics they are passionate about, promote
collaboration and inspire learning. Many of these
sessions are streamed live and recorded, which
gives team members the flexibility to watch
sessions in a way that best suits their needs.

GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS
Since 2013, Brookfield GIS has been committed to reducing the GHG emissions of our fleet by 50 per cent by
2020. In 2015, we reduced the GHG emissions of our fleet by 22.5 per cent, taking us a substantial step closer to
our 2020 goal. However, our total GHG emissions rose slightly in 2015 due to our expansion in company size and
corporate travel, while our GHG intensity decreased.
As part of our commitment to sustainable living, we track and report on our carbon footprint on an annual basis.
Our GHG emissions are calculated following the ISO 14064-1 standard, and we use the Operational Control
approach – this approach accounts for GHG Emissions based on the control of operations. CO₂, CH₄, N₂O, as
well as refrigerants R-22, R-122, and R-134a, were all accounted for in the GHG calculations.
Our GHG inventory includes our direct and indirect emissions from our corporate facilities and vehicle fleet. This
includes emissions from fossil fuel consumption, fugitive refrigerants, electricity and steam consumption. We
also calculated our Other Indirect emissions from corporate air travel, and we are working to include purchased
paper as an Other Indirect emission source in the future.
CALCULATION METHODOLOGY
Our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are calculated following the ISO 14064-1 standard and we use the
Operational Control approach, which accounts for all GHG emissions based on the control of operations. Our
GHG inventory includes direct, indirect, and other indirect emissions from our corporate facilities, our vehicle
fleet of over 400 vehicles, and business travel. This includes emissions from electricity and steam consumption,
fugitive refrigerant emissions, and travel; looking forward, we hope to integrate emissions from purchased
paper into these calculations.
Congruent with our previous Corporate Sustainability Reports, our base year is the 2013 fiscal year; this report
will compare values with our base year as well as the 2014 year. Energy and GHG data accounts for all 17 of our
corporate offices, and our water data accounts only for our head office in Markham, Ontario. The intensity values
in the below chart are calculated on a per square metre basis of the facilities specific to each data set. We have
proudly driven our energy, GHG, and water intensities down by 9 per cent, 27 per cent, and 2 per cent from the
base year, respectively.

Our waste data is solely from our head office location, the Innovation Centre, in Markham, Ontario. We reduced
our waste generation by 6.9 metric tonnes, a total reduction of 14 per cent; we also increased the percentage of
our waste diverted to a recycling stream by 5.8 per cent. Once again, we reached our goal of diverting 100 per
cent of our waste from landfills (breakdown of our waste diversion is shown in the pie chart below). In 2015, we
implemented a smart sensor technology in our waste bins, which is focused on reducing the frequency of truck
rolls for our waste vendors.
Similar to our waste data, the boundary for our water data is also our head office in Markham, Ontario. This new
state-of-the-art office space is outfitted with low-flow water fixtures and minimal landscape irrigation. As a
result, our overall water consumption has reduced drastically, as shown in the Water Use chart below.

DIVERSITY & TEAM DEVELOPMENTSOCIAL
Our team grew considerably in 2015. With so many fresh faces coming on board, it was
important to welcome and promote inclusiveness as well as support those looking to take
the next step in their careers.
CAREER
DEVELOPMENT
Continuous learning opportunities are a critical
component of team member support strategies.
Investing in the development of skills and
supporting on-the-job training enhances our
organization. Whether that means supporting
certifications like PMP, Lean Six Sigma Black Belt
Certification and ICOR Certification or supporting
team members in technical skill enhancement
and apprenticeship programs.
DIVERSITY COMMITTEE
Diversity is a vital component to making
Brookfield GIS a successful organization. In 2015,
a Diversity Committee was formed to ensure that
our workforce reflects the diversity that exists
in the community from which we recruit and
employ.
The committee is responsible for the
development and maintenance of the
Employment Equity plan and the promotion
of key programs focused on strengthening
diversity and inclusiveness throughout the
organization. These programs develop and
support the promotion of people with disabilities,
opportunities for women and visible minority
groups in leadership, creating an inclusive
culture for Aboriginal team members, and
serving diverse communities.
Additionally, Brookfield GIS hosts an annual
internationally themed event at the Innovation

ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE
SUMMARY
In fiscal year 2015, we gave back to the
communities we worked in by surpassing our goal
of donating one per cent of our annual earnings
in support of charities and organizations. These
donations benefited people and families where
we conduct business across Canada.
It is our belief that we can positively impact the
health of our communities through this kind of
financial support. Our donations take the form
of direct contributions, fundraising events for
charities and the in-kind voluntary actions of our
team members.
Our company and team members are committed to caring for and supporting their
communities. In 2015, we raised and donated over $362,000 that directly contributed to the
health and improvement of the communities in which we live and work.

Our team members are the ambassadors of our organization and our greatest assets. We
place a major emphasis on skill development by investing significant dollars into health
and safety training, specific on-the-job training and development.
In 2015, we added approximately 500 new technicians to our team, which affected safety
performance due to the nature of their work. Regarding our Lost Time Injury Rate, we are
still less than half of the WSIB (Ontario) Average for our industry and have been for the past
four years. Our Total Recordable Injury Rate rose slightly in 2015 due to the same team
growth, however, we are still significantly below the WSIB (Ontario) Average for our industry.
We are committed to enhancing our robust management systems to improve our
performance so everyone makes it home safely every day.

community who are all important stakeholders for
Brookfield GIS.
The 2015 Corporate Sustainability Report is reporting
on our activities from January 2015 to December 2015,
unless explicitly stated otherwise. Our most recent
report was released in April 2015 and reported on our
activities between October 1, 2013 to September 30,
2014. This shift in reporting period is a result of our
Fiscal Year changing to January – December.
This report addresses the activities of Brookfield GIS’
Canadian operations. Brookfield GIS’ head office, The
Innovation Centre, is located in Markham, Ontario.
Brookfield GIS occupies 17 other offices throughout
Canada; both owned and leased locations. Brookfield
GIS leases a service vehicle fleet of over 400 vehicles
and our team members do extensive travelling to visit
client sites. We are continually encouraging our team
members to use our teleworking/telecommuting
options, and to find the most sustainable ways to work
productively.
For any greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory, an
organizational boundary is used to determine how
GHG emissions are accounted for. Typically, one of
the following approaches is used:
●● Equity share approach: accounts for GHG
emissions based on share of equity in the
operation;
●● Financial control approach: accounts for GHG
emissions based on the financial control over
the operation; or
●● Operational control approach: accounts for GHG
emissions based on the control of operations.
The organization must report emissions from the
sources over which it has operational control.
Brookfield GIS has chosen an operation control
approach (as opposed to the equity share or
financial control approach) as this approach suits our
operations-based company, and our data systems are
designed to capture activity in this manner.

  • 4. 4Brookfield Global Integrated Solutions Corporate Responsibility Report 2015 It is with great pride and enthusiasm that we present our 2015 Report on Sustainability for Brookfield Global Integrated Solutions (Brookfield GIS) Canada. This report summarizes our significant economic, environmental, and social impacts throughout the 2015 fiscal year, as well as the strategies and goals for the organization moving forward. At Brookfield GIS, we believe sustainable practices are crucial to assisting in the global effort to slow and eventually reverse climate change. This is why we remain focused on the implementation of technologies and programs which: ●● Decrease energy use ●● Decrease greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions ●● Reduce water use ●● Divert and decrease waste These technologies and programs are implemented throughout our own offices and our client’s portfolios. We strive to be a role model for sustainability as we continue our role as leaders in the corporate real estate management industry. Promoting awareness of sustainable business practices is a key priority for Brookfield GIS. As our sustainability technologies and programs are proven and shown to also drive significant operational cost reductions, we are able to implement them throughout our clients’ portfolios. These technologies and programs are also leveraged throughout Brookfield Asset Management Inc’s (Brookfield) 378 million square foot managed real estate portfolio as well as their affiliated companies. LEED™, WELL®, and BOMA are a few of the key standards we use as benchmarks for sustainable building practices. Among our suppliers, sustainable and environmentally friendly technologies and business practices are encouraged, rewarded and implemented across an entire portfolio. We believe these actions support and encourage the sustainability goals of our clients and suppliers within their respective industries. Looking to the long-term, we will continue to expand our support in the development of market A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO 2015 Highlights: ●● Participated in the Executive Sleep Out to raise funds and awareness for Covenant House ●● Keynote speaker at numerous events including the Climate Reality Leadership Corps ●● Recognized as Corporate Knight’s Greenest Chief Executive in Canada 2015 ●● Co-founded Cam's Kids Foundation, a not-for- profit organization to support youth struggling with anxiety ●● Co-chair Board of Directors for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation's Leaders for the Cure ●● Director on the board of the Climate Reality Project of Canada ●● Active member of the Council for Clean Capitalism
  • 5. 5Brookfield Global Integrated Solutions Corporate Responsibility Report 2015 opportunities for Canadian technologies focused on increasing energy efficiency, reducing GHG emissions, and driving responsible water and waste use. Over 2014-2015, various levels of government throughout Canada have made transitional shifts and are now aligned on energy-related policies. We look forward to continuing to work with all levels of government to encourage the creation and implementation of programs that support the uptake of sustainability in the corporate real estate sector. We will also continue to maintain and enhance our commitment to social well-being, including the support of charities within our local communities. These include The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, President’s Choice Children’s Charity, the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, Cam’s Kids and SickKids Foundation, to name a few. Our people remain a top priority, and continuously evaluating our programs to assist in meeting their changing needs will remain a focus. Rolling out Career Pathing programs and Training and Development for Leaders will be among the new programs. 2015 was yet another benchmark year for Brookfield GIS. Across our Canadian offices in 2015, we decreased our building energy intensity by 2 per cent, decreased our building water intensity by 15 per cent, and also decreased our GHG emissions per capita by 31 per cent. Once again, we diverted 100 per cent of our waste from landfills and increased the percentage of our waste diverted to recycling by 5.8 per cent. Our Energy and Sustainability team, our internal Green Team committee, and the implementation of new technologies and programs drove these significant reductions. The Brookfield GIS team had extensive growth in 2015, with 1,809 new team members hired and 264 returning team members. Led by our 11 Corporate Social Responsibility committees, our team members raised over $362,000 for charities and local community groups. We were also very thrilled to announce the formation of our internal Diversity and Inclusiveness Committee, which will further energize and elevate our performance as a team. We welcomed new clients with the addition of numerous Canadian and global leaders in the financial, utilities and life sciences sectors. Our managed spend in Canada for the fiscal year was $2.4 billion across 150 million square feet of real estate. We are very proud to have had a year of double-digit growth for the ninth consecutive year. We are committed to being leaders in the corporate real estate management industry as we continue to lead by example for our clients, shareholders, suppliers, team members, and the industry. Thank you all for caring! Gord Hicks, P. Eng, LEED AP President and CEO, Americas

  • 9. 9Brookfield Global Integrated Solutions Corporate Responsibility Report 2015 SUSTAINABLE PROCUREMENT Throughout 2015, we continued to enhance and expand our Sustainable Sourcing Strategy Program. We require all of our suppliers to use environmentally-friendly products where available, implement and use a recycling program, and encourage the reuse of materials when possible. When going to market, our Requests for Proposals (RFPs) require interested proponents to address their corporate sustainability. This is important for selecting a successful proponent. Our procurement and sourcing team has implemented an electronic signing tool for all service contracts that are signed. Eight-hundred e-signatures have been captured with this tool thus far. That's a savings of approximately 80,000 pieces of paper or 10 trees. As this initiative has been such a success, we plan to implement the tool beyond our procurement and sourcing team and into other departments across our organization. TOP DONATIONS OF 2015 SUPPLIER DIVERSITY Our procurement and sourcing team has continued to work with the Canadian Aboriginal and Minority Supplier Council (CAMSC) to ensure we're providing accessibility, fostering an increase in innovation, and increasing our own supplier diversity. Moving forward, we will continue to look for opportunities where we can deploy the vested approach. • 10. 10Brookfield Global Integrated Solutions Corporate Responsibility Report 2015 SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGYENVIRONMENT We believe that future generations deserve to see the incredible natural wonders our earth has provided to us. Unfortunately, climate change caused by GHG emissions, global practices of energy and water consumption, and waste production mean that the reality of this happening is at risk. By continuing to set an example in the corporate real estate industry on the importance of sustainable business practices, we hope we can help mitigate the effects of climate change by reducing our own and our client's environmental footprints. Every day, Brookfield GIS makes decisions that minimize our impact on the environment and community, and we encourage our team members to apply those principals in their daily life. Our commitment to sustainability is guided by our President and CEO, Gord Hicks. In 2015, Corporate Knights awarded Gord with the Greenest Chief Executive in Canada Award for being committed to environmental sustainability. His leadership has guided our efforts in minimizing the impact our clients, suppliers and team members have on the environment; as well as advocating for environmental stewardship across our industry. We continue to work closely with all levels of government to encourage the implementation of programs that encourage the uptake of sustainable business practices. By providing innovative solutions and programs that reduce energy, decrease water consumption, and decrease and divert waste across our client’s portfolio, we hope to assist in preserving the environment for future generations of Canadians. SUSTAINABILITY AT THE INNOVATION CENTRE In 2014, we moved our head office to a new location in Markham, Ontario known as the Innovation Centre. This space was designed for increased flexibility and workplace mobility, and encourage collaboration and the sharing of ideas among team members, suppliers and clients. The Innovation Centre is used to research, develop and showcase leading workplace innovations that can be instituted in other offices, as well as foster team member education and workplace well-being. It also serves as a testing ground for sustainability initiatives that are geared toward reducing the operational impacts of facilities as well as demonstrating the sustainable procurement practices that are an integral part of how we perform business. During 2015, we completed the move to our new office space and implemented various sustainable initiatives including: ●● A zero-waste program, which uses centralized, four-stream receptacles to differentiate between waste, organics, paper, and plastics. ●● A writing instrument collection and recycling program initiated collaboratively with Terra Cycle. ●● Replaced 300 lighting fixtures with Philips LED T8 light bulbs, a new high-efficient technology that has reduced the power draw of each fixture from 74 to 34 watts.
  • 11. 11Brookfield Global Integrated Solutions Corporate Responsibility Report 2015 SMART COMMUTE Metrolinx's Smart Commute program conducted a baseline survey of our team member commuting practices in 2012 and recently conducted a follow-up survey in 2015. Over those three years, we are pleased to note that our team member’s single occupant vehicle (SOV) use decreased by 6.5 per cent, public transit use increased by 5.7 per cent, and telework increased by 5.7 per cent, with a slight increase in cycling and walking. We will continue to educate and work with our team members to encourage these positive trends. LEED™ & WELL® Brookfield GIS has been working on LEED™ certification projects for a number of years and is an active sponsor and partner of the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC). Leading up to 2015, many of the projects we completed were LEED™ Existing Buildings certified; this past year, Brookfield GIS was proud to complete our first LEED™ New Construction project. We look forward to working with our clients to implement the WELL Building Standard®, which is the world's first building standard focused exclusively on human health and wellness. TEAM MEMBER ENGAGEMENT Our Green Team and 11 regional Corporate Responsibility committees that are established across Canada continued to lead on various corporate social responsibility fronts. Team members across Canada participated in Green Team-led events such as the WWF Polar Bear Dip and CN Tower Climb, while the Corporate Responsibility committees organized various events such as charity casinos and golf tournaments. CLIMATE REALITY LEADERS Our President and CEO continued to work closely with the Climate Reality Project Canada. Gord, a Certified Canadian Presenter for the organization and board member since 2009, was a guest speaker at the July 2015 Climate Reality Leaders event. Gord’s speech provided inspiration, leadership and addressed how the building sector will play an important role in reducing our environmental footprint. Brookfield GIS matched all donations at the event up to $10,000, helping to raise awareness for the event. GORD TALKS We also continued our “Gord Talks” series of internal speaking events inspired by our President and CEO. The series has sparked innovative thinking and team member engagement between Brookfield GIS’ strategic partners, clients, suppliers and team members alike. These sessions allow individuals to speak on topics they are passionate about, promote collaboration and inspire learning. Many of these sessions are streamed live and recorded, which gives team members the flexibility to watch sessions in a way that best suits their needs.

In 2015, we reduced the GHG emissions of our fleet by 22.5 per cent, taking us a substantial step closer to our 2020 goal. However, our total GHG emissions rose slightly in 2015 due to our expansion in company size and corporate travel, while our GHG intensity decreased. As part of our commitment to sustainable living, we track and report on our carbon footprint on an annual basis. Our GHG emissions are calculated following the ISO 14064-1 standard, and we use the Operational Control approach – this approach accounts for GHG Emissions based on the control of operations. CO₂, CH₄, N₂O, as well as refrigerants R-22, R-122, and R-134a, were all accounted for in the GHG calculations. Our GHG inventory includes our direct and indirect emissions from our corporate facilities and vehicle fleet. This includes emissions from fossil fuel consumption, fugitive refrigerants, electricity and steam consumption. We also calculated our Other Indirect emissions from corporate air travel, and we are working to include purchased paper as an Other Indirect emission source in the future. CALCULATION METHODOLOGY Our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are calculated following the ISO 14064-1 standard and we use the Operational Control approach, which accounts for all GHG emissions based on the control of operations. Our GHG inventory includes direct, indirect, and other indirect emissions from our corporate facilities, our vehicle fleet of over 400 vehicles, and business travel. This includes emissions from electricity and steam consumption, fugitive refrigerant emissions, and travel; looking forward, we hope to integrate emissions from purchased paper into these calculations. Congruent with our previous Corporate Sustainability Reports, our base year is the 2013 fiscal year; this report will compare values with our base year as well as the 2014 year. Energy and GHG data accounts for all 17 of our corporate offices, and our water data accounts only for our head office in Markham, Ontario. The intensity values in the below chart are calculated on a per square metre basis of the facilities specific to each data set. We have proudly driven our energy, GHG, and water intensities down by 9 per cent, 27 per cent, and 2 per cent from the base year, respectively.

Once again, we reached our goal of diverting 100 per cent of our waste from landfills (breakdown of our waste diversion is shown in the pie chart below). In 2015, we implemented a smart sensor technology in our waste bins, which is focused on reducing the frequency of truck rolls for our waste vendors. Similar to our waste data, the boundary for our water data is also our head office in Markham, Ontario. This new state-of-the-art office space is outfitted with low-flow water fixtures and minimal landscape irrigation. As a result, our overall water consumption has reduced drastically, as shown in the Water Use chart below. m³

  • 19. 19Brookfield Global Integrated Solutions Corporate Responsibility Report 2015 community who are all important stakeholders for Brookfield GIS. The 2015 Corporate Sustainability Report is reporting on our activities from January 2015 to December 2015, unless explicitly stated otherwise. Our most recent report was released in April 2015 and reported on our activities between October 1, 2013 to September 30, 2014. This shift in reporting period is a result of our Fiscal Year changing to January – December. This report addresses the activities of Brookfield GIS’ Canadian operations. Brookfield GIS’ head office, The Innovation Centre, is located in Markham, Ontario. Brookfield GIS occupies 17 other offices throughout Canada; both owned and leased locations. Brookfield GIS leases a service vehicle fleet of over 400 vehicles and our team members do extensive travelling to visit client sites. We are continually encouraging our team members to use our teleworking/telecommuting options, and to find the most sustainable ways to work productively. For any greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory, an organizational boundary is used to determine how GHG emissions are accounted for. Typically, one of the following approaches is used: ●● Equity share approach: accounts for GHG emissions based on share of equity in the operation; ●● Financial control approach: accounts for GHG emissions based on the financial control over the operation; or ●● Operational control approach: accounts for GHG emissions based on the control of operations. The organization must report emissions from the sources over which it has operational control. Brookfield GIS has chosen an operation control approach (as opposed to the equity share or financial control approach) as this approach suits our operations-based company, and our data systems are designed to capture activity in this manner.
