BASD Contribution to the Rio+20 Compilation Documentuncsd2012
This document provides an overview of the Business Action for Sustainable Development's (BASD) perspective on the two main themes of the upcoming Rio+20 Conference: 1) green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication, and 2) institutional framework for sustainable development. The BASD argues that the private sector has a key role to play in helping achieve sustainable development goals. They outline 10 key points that should be addressed in the Rio+20 outcome related to catalyzing private sector action toward a green economy. They also provide 4 points related to improving the international institutional framework for sustainable development.

IISD Summary of side events- Friday, March 23rduncsd2012
The document summarizes discussions from several side events at a UN conference on sustainable development. Representatives from governments, NGOs, and international organizations expressed concerns that the proposed green economy and sustainable development goals may weaken human rights and not adequately address social issues like poverty. They emphasized public participation and ensuring the needs of small farmers and indigenous groups are considered. There were also discussions around establishing planetary and social boundaries to frame new development goals and addressing inequities in sustainability and resource distribution.
Rio+20 Issues brief - Trade and Green Economyuncsd2012
This document discusses the trade implications of transitioning to a green economy, including potential policy measures countries may take that could impact trade flows. It analyzes various regulatory, fiscal, and capacity building measures that countries are considering and assesses their compatibility with existing WTO rules. The document suggests approaches to address concerns about these measures, such as international harmonization of standards, reforming subsidies rules to support renewable energy, and providing trade facilitation and financing to developing countries for green sectors.
This proposal suggests mainstreaming the National Greening Program (NGP) into the Provincial Greening Program (PGP) in Southern Leyte, Philippines. It proposes establishing 150 community school tree nurseries that would produce 3 million coffee and cacao seedlings per year. This would generate an estimated PHP 1.05 million in annual income for farmers after 3-5 years and PHP 525 million annually thereafter. It would provide livelihoods for communities involved in composting, bamboo and nipa production for the nurseries. The goal is to empower schools through community-shared agriculture and environmental education while alleviating poverty and building climate resilience.
The document proposes a project to establish a mechanized compost harvesting operation from dumpsites and landfills to provide livelihood opportunities for scavenger communities. It involves purchasing land currently used as a dumpsite to set up compost sifting equipment and produce compost for seedling production. This would help meet the large target of 3 million seedlings for reforestation programs while creating jobs and income streams from compost sales. However, the main challenge is acquiring the land, as local funding agencies cannot support land purchases. Outside funding is needed to purchase the property.
REDD+ is a mechanism to incentivize developing countries to protect and better manage their forests. It aims to make standing forests more valuable than cleared forests by creating a financial value for the carbon stored in trees. Developed countries would pay developing countries carbon offsets for maintaining their forest carbon stocks. This document outlines the need for a new vision for agriculture given the challenges of growing demand, constrained environmental resources, and unmet basic social needs. It notes that agriculture currently accounts for 70% of water use and up to 30% of greenhouse gas emissions. To feed a growing global population expected to reach over 9 billion people by 2050, annual food production will need to double while decreasing emissions and improving sustainability. Nearly 1 billion people currently go hungry, many of them small-scale farmers, and three-quarters of the world's poor live in rural areas dependent on agriculture. A new vision is needed to harness agriculture's potential to drive food security, environmental sustainability, and economic opportunity through innovation, collaboration, and market-based solutions

Twenty years after the first “Earth Summit”
organized at Rio de Janeiro in 1992, once again Brazil is
hosting the “Rio+20” Conference, which brings together
top national authorities around environmental issues. This
summit is an opportunity to renew the global political
commitment to sustainable development and to draw up an
inventory of measures already in place up to the present.
The focus of discussions is on the deployment of a
green economy fostering sustainable development and the
eradication of poverty. These topics are fully incorporated

Beyond Business
Given the impact of its major infrastructure projects on nature and local
community life, GDF SUEZ developed a whole area of expertise in providing
social and environmental support around its projects.
A hallmark of GDF SUEZ is the way in which it actively
engages with communities that are affected by its projects. Beyond
complying with social and environmental legislation that apply to its
activities, the Group provides actual material and human support to the
populations with which it interacts.
In Brazil, a country that currently uses only about 25% of its
enormous hydroelectric resources, dam construction undeniably has
an effect on the environment and on local community life. Brazil has
developed regulatory and institutional systems for protecting people
and nature, but new hydroelectric power plants are being built in
increasingly remote areas where the local people have but very little

Tractebel Energia, GDF SUEZ Group,
an ecologically social responsible company
Tractebel Energia, a GDF SUEZ subsidiary, is the country’s
leading private generator of electricity, responsible for 7% of the power
generation market in Brazil. Headquartered in Florianópolis, Santa
Catarina, Tractebel Engenharia operates 22 power plants in the country,
of which more than 80% are hydropower. The Company has shown
a remarkable growth in its electricity generation capacity, growing from
3,719 MW in 1998 to 6,908 MW in 2011.
With approximately 1,000 employees and more than 100 industrial
customers, Tractebel Energia’s HPPs are certified with ISO 9001 (OM
quality) and ISO 14001 (environmental management). Additionally,
Tractebel Energia has been part of the Brazilian Stock Exchange’s
Corporate Sustainability Index (ISE) since 2006, which comprises
companies with a recognized commitment to social responsibility
and business sustainability.
Tractebel Energia creates initiatives that protect the environment
and foster good relations with local governments and communities.
The company’s social initiatives focus on improving the quality of life
of children living in the poor neighborhoods surrounding its production
facilities and headquarters. Tractebel Energia initiates and supports
activities related, among other things, to the education, wellbeing and
legal rights of children and teenagers. It also encourages job creation
and income for families, fights child labor and promotes cultural and
sports activities.
By sponsoring local associations, municipal governments and public
agencies, Tractebel Energia actively works to protect the environment in
regions where it develops its activities, in particular restoring denuded
and eroded areas through reforestation.
