Art to me perfectly encapsulates the human urge to express, it engages an audience but also develops the
creator’s ability to be free within their work. Through both gcse and a level I centred my work around art
being a form of expression and a portrayal of emotion, captivated by artists such as jenny Saville and
Tracey Emin who inspired me to create art that I am passionate about and do out of my own love I have for
creating. It has been though my levels that I began to completely develop my style, experimenting with
mediums from embroidery to oil paint and continuing to find new ways to develop, experimenting with work
on a larger scale but also documenting my process and personal investigation through small studies and
sketchbooks. I see experimenting as one of the most vitals parts of creating art, whether it Is through going
outside of my comfort zone when it comes to the pieces of art I create or constantly finding new artists who
inspire my work and encourage me to explore the different styles that I am capable off. For my component
1 a level I chose the topic of ‘Expression within art’ a theme that allowed me to completely create art that
engaged me and allowed me to explore, conducting photoshoots based on societies perception of what we
deem normal on the standard of beauty ,to creating pieces that explore colour as a symbol of emotion,
exploring negative space and the ability for art to help both an explicit and implicit meaning. I researched
into how for hundreds of centuries people have used art as a form of communication, from Picassos
‘Guernica’ to Barbara Kruger’s ‘My body is a Battleground’ and many more, finding that to its core art has
through history been a form of expression and protest, going against boundaries and constantly (even in
small and unseen ways) effecting society and our perception of many social issues. This is something that
has always stood out to me within art, wanting to connect with this further in my studies at a level and
mature my work and its meaning, exploring social class and working-class Britain, to the attitudes towards
women in society,
One of the main things that captivates me the most when creating art, is the constant ability discover new
things and progress, finding inspiration from photographers such as Richard Billingham and artists from
Lucian Freud to Christina Troufa, people whose work completely differs from one another but being able to
find inspiration from each and every one of them, having a wide range to my work from my constant ability
to progress and explore. My overall aim for this course is to be able to develop, on both a large scale of
beginning to find a career in teaching art to either primary or secondary schools and inspiring those in the
same ways in which I previously was, or too simply be able to continue to create art, at a higher level.
