Data scientists, data engineers, and data businesspeople are critical to leveraging data in any organization. A common complaint from data science managers is that data scientists invest time prototyping algorithms, and throw them over a proverbial fence to engineers to implement, only to find the algorithms must be rebuilt from scratch to scale. This is a symptom of a broader ailment -- that data teams are often designed as functional silos without proper communication and planning.
This talk outlines a framework to build and organize a data team that produces better results, minimizes wasted effort among team members, and ships great data products.
How to Master Difficult Conversations at Work – Leader’s GuidePiktochart
Confrontation and having difficult conversations with employees is one of the hardest jobs of a leader. Learn how to approach them using the GROW acronym:
G is for Goals
Start every difficult conversation by stating its purpose

State the reality of how the person is performing or how he or she is behaving.
O is for Options
Lay out a few options to help this person improve.
W is for Willingness
Ask this person what they would do and give them time to respond

EMPOWERED - Achieving Extraordinary Results with Ordinary People" by Marty CaganProductized
In this PRODUCTIZED keynote, Marty Cagan discusses the critical traits and behaviors of many of our industry’s best product teams. Marty has had the extremely good fortune to be able to work with many of the very best technology product teams in the world. People creating the products you use and love every day. Teams that are literally changing the world. What he has learned is that there is a profound difference between how the very best product companies create technology products, and the rest. There are differences that cover everything from how the leaders behave, to the level of empowerment of teams, to how the organization thinks about funding, staffing and producing products, down to how product, design and engineering collaborate to discover effective solutions for their customers. With a grateful nod to Ben Horowitz’s classic Good Product Manager/Bad Product Manager, for those that have not yet had the opportunity to participate in, or observe a strong product team up close, in this keynote, Marty gives us a glimpse into some of the important differences between strong product teams and weak teams.
Both digital and traditional businesses are constantly evolving, and the need to move fast is a pervasive reality. Delivering what customers want and need goes beyond the creation of delivery channels. In fact, it relies on the company’s ability to produce, consume, organise, understand, curate, and distribute data.
In this presentation, Dan Aragao and Simon Hope provide a glimpse of the journey ThoughtWorks and REA are currently undergoing to create a truly data-centric, cutting-edge digital business.

“Many people would be better off if they did less and reflected more.” — Manfred Kets de Vries, INSEAD Distinguished Professor of Leadership Development & Organisational Change
Despite making technological advances to speed up our work, we somehow find ourselves working more—not less. The busy lifestyle may deceptively make us feel productive and accomplished. But research has finally exposed the tolls of avoiding free time: depression, sleep deprivation, relationship breakdown and poor quality of work, to name a few. Doing nothing may sound like a waste of time, but it's one of the secrets to keeping your brain in top shape.

Launching a startup isn't easy. At each stage of scaling - from founding to product-market fit, from product-market fit to hyper growth, and from hyper growth to maturity - entrepreneurs face unique challenges. Greylock Partners hosted an event, called Greyscale, focused on these challenges at each stage. In the opening keynote, Jerry Chen of Greylock Partners discusses the state of enterprise software after the first quarter of 2016. He summarizes the private and public markets, M&A activity, and explains how this climate affects the startup environment.
Each technological age has been marked by a shift in how the industrial platform enables companies to rethink their business processes and create wealth. In the talk I argue that we are limiting our view of what this next industrial/digital age can offer because of how we read, measure and through that perceive the world (how we cherry pick data). Companies are locked in metrics and quantitative measures, data that can fit into a spreadsheet. And by that they see the digital transformation merely as an efficiency tool to the fossil fuel age. But we need to stretch further…

ML Products have become a prolific and integral part of taking the insights of Data Science from theory to reality. Oddly though, the path from conception to implementation is often unclear with seemingly few similar examples to work from. The result is often a sea of agony between sliding deadlines, heroic efforts of people working though unforeseen challenges and haphazard innovation. Each time a beautiful model makes its impact on the business bottom line, something worked. In this talk we present the ML Playbook. It pulls together the best aspects from a variety of successful ML Product launches into a cohesive strategy to Plan, Build, Test, Learn, and Release ML Products. We'll demonstrate the ML Playbook in action with the story of launching an alert monitoring product for the world's most powerful jet engines, the GE90-115B.

Levelwise PageRank with Loop-Based Dead End Handling Strategy : SHORT REPORT ...Subhajit Sahu
Abstract — Levelwise PageRank is an alternative method of PageRank computation which decomposes the input graph into a directed acyclic block-graph of strongly connected components, and processes them in topological order, one level at a time. This enables calculation for ranks in a distributed fashion without per-iteration communication, unlike the standard method where all vertices are processed in each iteration. It however comes with a precondition of the absence of dead ends in the input graph. Here, the native non-distributed performance of Levelwise PageRank was compared against Monolithic PageRank on a CPU as well as a GPU. To ensure a fair comparison, Monolithic PageRank was also performed on a graph where vertices were split by components. Results indicate that Levelwise PageRank is about as fast as Monolithic PageRank on the CPU, but quite a bit slower on the GPU. Slowdown on the GPU is likely caused by a large submission of small workloads, and expected to be non-issue when the computation is performed on massive graphs.

Empowering the Data Analytics Ecosystem: A Laser Focus on Value
The data analytics ecosystem thrives when every component functions at its peak, unlocking the true potential of data. Here's a laser focus on key areas for an empowered ecosystem:
1. Democratize Access, Not Data:
Granular Access Controls: Provide users with self-service tools tailored to their specific needs, preventing data overload and misuse.
Data Catalogs: Implement robust data catalogs for easy discovery and understanding of available data sources.
2. Foster Collaboration with Clear Roles:
Data Mesh Architecture: Break down data silos by creating a distributed data ownership model with clear ownership and responsibilities.
Collaborative Workspaces: Utilize interactive platforms where data scientists, analysts, and domain experts can work seamlessly together.
3. Leverage Advanced Analytics Strategically:
AI-powered Automation: Automate repetitive tasks like data cleaning and feature engineering, freeing up data talent for higher-level analysis.
Right-Tool Selection: Strategically choose the most effective advanced analytics techniques (e.g., AI, ML) based on specific business problems.
4. Prioritize Data Quality with Automation:
Automated Data Validation: Implement automated data quality checks to identify and rectify errors at the source, minimizing downstream issues.
Data Lineage Tracking: Track the flow of data throughout the ecosystem, ensuring transparency and facilitating root cause analysis for errors.
5. Cultivate a Data-Driven Mindset:
Metrics-Driven Performance Management: Align KPIs and performance metrics with data-driven insights to ensure actionable decision making.
Data Storytelling Workshops: Equip stakeholders with the skills to translate complex data findings into compelling narratives that drive action.
Benefits of a Precise Ecosystem:
Sharpened Focus: Precise access and clear roles ensure everyone works with the most relevant data, maximizing efficiency.
Actionable Insights: Strategic analytics and automated quality checks lead to more reliable and actionable data insights.
Continuous Improvement: Data-driven performance management fosters a culture of learning and continuous improvement.
Sustainable Growth: Empowered by data, organizations can make informed decisions to drive sustainable growth and innovation.
By focusing on these precise actions, organizations can create an empowered data analytics ecosystem that delivers real value by driving data-driven decisions and maximizing the return on their data investment.
Techniques to optimize the pagerank algorithm usually fall in two categories. One is to try reducing the work per iteration, and the other is to try reducing the number of iterations. These goals are often at odds with one another. Skipping computation on vertices which have already converged has the potential to save iteration time. Skipping in-identical vertices, with the same in-links, helps reduce duplicate computations and thus could help reduce iteration time. Road networks often have chains which can be short-circuited before pagerank computation to improve performance. Final ranks of chain nodes can be easily calculated. This could reduce both the iteration time, and the number of iterations. If a graph has no dangling nodes, pagerank of each strongly connected component can be computed in topological order. This could help reduce the iteration time, no. of iterations, and also enable multi-iteration concurrency in pagerank computation. The combination of all of the above methods is the STICD algorithm. [sticd] For dynamic graphs, unchanged components whose ranks are unaffected can be skipped altogether.
