This document provides a summary of Brian R.S. Ward's industrial design work and background. It includes 3 projects he worked on: an ophthalmic surgical system from 2002-2003, a waterproof hearing aid called the "Hearing Aid Metamorphosis" from 2004 for the Royal National Institute of the Deaf, and an acoustic digital alarm clock from 2005. It also lists his education and experience in industrial design.

3D Printing: stop prototyping, start producing!
Jan Eite Bullema, Senior Scientist, TNO
3D printing is transforming from a prototyping technology into a manufacturing technology. Two important roadblocks in this transformation are (1) the difficulty of designing products suitable for 3D printing and (2) production costs. In my presentation I will show how the issue of product design for 3D printing is addressed using big data and machine learning. To lower production costs faster 3D printing technologies have been developed. In the presentation I will show examples of innovative equipment that TNO has developed to increase the production speed of 3D printing.
Templates for Consumer Use in Designing Customised ProductsYudhi Ariadi
This research proposes a new design system for consumers who would use the product to run an easy-to-operate design and selection tool by themselves instead of conventional Computer Aided Design (CAD). In terms of manufacturing the product, several studies focus on involving the consumer as much and as early as possible. However, recent developments of Additive Layer Manufacturing (ALM) technologies have led to a renewed interest in allowing the consumers to develop customised products. As a result, manufacturing is being brought closer to consumers. This paper would simplify the CAD stages by utilising design templates for consumer use in customising additive layer manufactured products.

Hearing Aid Metamorphosis:
From Sea to Land
This product was devised for the active, sport oriented,
deaf/hearing impaired individual.
This concept is a waterproof hearing aid that
employs an iconic form and tough function
leaving behind the typical pink plastic
typology.
After interviewing members and officials
of the RNID,it became apparent for the
need of a sports hearing aid,and
lacking in the market Swimming,scuba,
surfing,skiing and triathalon were the
main target sports.
Utilizing a seashell typology,rugged,
smooth form with integrated silicon
surface interface and waterproof switches.

20. the stool project.
for this project wedid-id had to design a stool for world
theater laboratory fashion brand. the first step was to
meet with the owner and check out the space that the stool
had to be designed for. the concept for the design of the
stool was to follow the feeling of the space, thus to be a
polygonal prism, with sharp angles and edges.
what followed was a brainstorming with sketches and ideas.
after choosing two to three ideas, 3d generated computer
models and renderings were succeeded. additionally cardboard
one to one scale models were assembled enable for us to get
the right feeling of the stools. the procedure for the stool
prototyping was to built the stool out of one sheet of
aluminium by using a three options of machinery: laser cut
or water jet machine, with the advantage of the second one
not leaving any burn marks on the material, or cnc (computed
numerically controlled) machine. tig welding was also used
to join surfaces.

24. TABLEWARE CONCEPT
The concept is to redefine the way that people
set the table and interact with their utensils.
Exploring :
- placement of the utensils on the table
- relationship between the utensils
- new forms and typologies
- freeing space on the table
- streamlining setting the table
