10. #BizTrends2017: Mobile trends for 2017
Articles – Mobile Trends
Mobile is the single most important device that connects consumers with each other, with brands, and products and services. Over the past
few years it has demonstrated its power in both marketing and advertising, and as a source of consumer insight.
The GSMA Mobile Economy Sub-Saharan Africa 2015 report predicts a significant uptick of unique subscriber registrations and sim
connections throughout this region over the next few years. Mobile broadband, in particular, is set to grow at an anticipated rate of 235%
from 2015 to 2020. This growth in smartphone technology opens up more dynamic ways to interact with consumers, and will shape mobile
research trends over the next few years.

23. Cigarettes in Nigeria…
Cigarettes in Nigeria continues to be dominated by BATN, which accounted for 79% of volume sales in
2015. The company has dominated Nigerian cigarettes since 2003, when it built its new factory and took
control of over 70% of cigarettes volume sales in the country, with the reduction in illicit trade helping it
to solidify its position. The company’s range of brands is very strong and BATN is probably the only
company to have a complete presence across the length and breadth of the country. However, over the
last five years, the company’s sales share has fallen, particularly due to competition from brands offered
by multinational Japan Tobacco Inc. (manufactured in Nigeria by International Tobacco Co Ltd).

24. Philip Morris International Looks Toward A Smoke-Free Future
Progress on potentially less harmful alternatives to smoking
Over one million adult smokers have converted to IQOS, PMI’s leading heated tobacco product
“Adult smokers are looking for product choices that offer the satisfying taste, ritual, and pleasure they get from cigarettes, but
with far lower amounts of the harmful compounds found in smoke,” said Tony Snyder, PMI Vice President of
Communications. “After more than ten years of research and development, today we have both the science and the technology to
make these products a reality for the world’s 1.1 billion smokers.”
Philip Morris International Inc. (PMI) (NYSE/Euronext Paris:
PM) today re-affirms its commitment to designing a smoke-free
future. With more than one million adult smokers who have
converted to IQOS, momentum continues to grow behind the
company’s full-scale effort to market smoke-free products that
can ultimately replace cigarettes. PMI’s new website offers a look
into its vision for the future, and how its new products can have a
significant impact on adult smokers and society.
IQOS is one of four smoke-free products from PMI to address adult smoker demand and varying preferences. It is a
heated tobacco product that was launched in late 2014 and is expected to be available in key cities in over 30 markets in
2017. Since 2008, PMI has hired over 400 scientists and experts and invested over USD 3 billion in research, product
development and scientific substantiation.

25. Investigating e-cigarettes
A look into the booming e-cigarette industry
and the potential misinformation behind its growing success.
The e-cigarette industry, also knowing as vaping, is enjoying great success across the United States with over 10 percent of all American adults - ie, an estimated
20 million people - currently vaping. Profits are also through the roof, with revenue from the vaping industry doubling in value from $1.75bn in 2013 to $3.5bn
in only a two-year space of time. Most e-cigarette users are either former or current smokers, with many taking a gamble on vaping being less detrimental to
their health than traditional tobacco, simply because less is currently known about the new device.
But with research into e-cigarettes already struggling to keep up with new developments and changing statistics, how do consumers know which products to
trust? Read more…

The noodles market in Nigeria has continued to grow in leaps and bounds amidst fierce competition among players for

consumers and striving for growing market share. However, until the launch of Indomie almost 30 years ago, the
noodles market in Nigeria was almost non-existent. It was perceived as an Asian diet served only at Chinese restaurants.
But since 1988 when De United Foods Industries Limited (now Dufil Prima foods) first marketed its Indomie Noodles,

51. 12 Nigerian Brands that were exceptional on Social Media in 2016
Social Media Engagement
Once upon a time, the life of a brand’s Social Media manager was generally routine: create content calendar, design cool banners, schedule on
Hootsuite/Tweetdeck, moderate comments, respond to inquiries, go to sleep. Ease or difficulty depended on the brand’s product/service
and/or who the TA was. But overall, social media management was pretty monotonous stuff. Now, everything has changed. Brands now
understand how important social media is and how it affects their reputation, perception, overhead and ultimately sales. Brands now know
that the usual routine posts that scream ‘patronize us’ would not do much for them anymore, so those that are ‘smart’ are employing the
services of highly skilled individuals and digital agencies to manage their online strategy. Read more...

84. Mall developers, tenants consider rent renegotiation
Real Estate – Recent Developments
With the current economic crisis creating challenges for all sectors of the economy, the country’s rapidly growing retail sector is struggling.
Apart from a few malls, most retail facilities in the country were funded by private equity firms that got their funding mainly from foreign
sources; and by virtue of this, they are currently facing a lot of challenges as many of their tenants who sell mostly foreign products, are
finding it difficult to stock up or fit out in new malls due to forex scarcity. Findings by our correspondent indicate that many tenants are no
longer paying rents in some of the big and expensive malls, because the rents are high due to the naira to dollar exchange rate, and most of
the retailers don’t have enough liquidity to stock up due to the forex restrictions, high costs and problems associated with importation.
According to a source, who did not want to be quoted, some tenants owe as much as 15 months’ rent and developers cannot ask them to
vacate the malls as empty shops in a mall is an indication of a failed project. Our correspondent gathered that the landlords were becoming
more creative to keep their tenants in business and the malls functioning. Read more...

Real estate, like almost every other professional field in the world, has undergone a major disruption. The digital era is with us,
and thanks to that fact social media for real estate agents has taken over most forms of online marketing for this field.
Years ago, when the Yellow Pages ruled this planet, realtors relied heavily on conventional forms of marketing to get clients. We
are talking about billboards, radio and TV ads, open house calls in mailboxes, and even cold calling to see if someone wanted to
buy or sell property. A great many of these methods may not work today. Mostly because the kind of people buying homes fall
under that notorious category known as ‘Millennials’.

89. Kia joins Elizade, Cosharis in used car business
Auto Industry
Until recently, the used vehicle business in Nigeria used to be a debasing one; the market was mainly for the organised dealers who were
considered not financially strong enough to venture into new vehicle business. But things are fast changing as notable car dealers, including
Cosharis Motors and Elizade Nigeria Limited, have become major investors in the business of Tokunbo cars as used cars are popularly called.
The latest entrant is Kia Nigeria Limited, which has just announced the launch of what it calls ‘best ever certified used car programme’. A
statement by the Marketing Manager, Dana Motors Limited, Mr. Jimoh Olawale, obtained via email, said the programme would offer many
people “the platform to get the best valuation for their cars in real time at our used car showroom in Lagos.”

92. Do Nigerians Need Pay Per View Model?
Opinion
The issue of adopting the Pay per View model against the usual monthly subscription model which is obtainable in Nigeria has been a
subject of discourse. Some Nigerians believe strongly that the monthly subscription model by Digital Terrestrial Service providers is geared
towards exploiting Nigerians. A few weeks ago, a Senate (Jones Onyereri) representative from Imo State raised a motion at the Nigerian
House of Representatives concerning the issue of Digital Terrestrial Television Service in Nigeria, advocating that Pay per View should be
adopted in Nigeria other than the subscription based models by the likes of GOTV and DSTV. He argues that Nigerians are made to pay for
what they do not consume through the monthly subscription scheme presently obtainable in the service charges of major Digital Television
Broadcasting service providers like DSTV, Star times and GOTV. Personally, I think it is germane to have a full grasp of how payment
models work across borders. When you have understood how digital television stations operate locally and internationally, it gives you a
standpoint to present your arguments logically. Read more...

Pineapple farming in Nigeria is another sure money maker. Thousands of fruit juices are made with
pineapple and the makers of fruit juice are always on the look out for pineapple farm where they could buy
their raw material. Go to mile 12 market or any market near you or even the fruit sellers near you and try
to price pineapple. Then you will realize that pineapple is edible gold. One head of pineapple is sold for
N200 in the local market while the same head of pineapple goes for N300+ in the fruit shops. For wholesale
farmers, they sell for N70 – N100. Lets assume you harvested 200,000 pineapple and decided to sell for just

103. Order High Quality Pineapples from Pizzi Double Farms
Agripreneurs
Pineapple is popularly used to produce fruit juice and serves as desserts, salads, and in fruit cocktail. The popularity of the
pineapple is due to its sweet-sour taste containing 15% sugar, malic and citric fruit acids. It is also high in vitamin B1, B2, B6 and
C. The protein digesting enzyme bromelin seems to help digestion at the end of a high protein meal. Owing to these, pineapple
fruits are highly required in our daily diets either by taking the fresh fruits, dried fruits or the juice. Cakes, deserts and other food
condiments are made from pineapple. On a daily basis in fruits and vegetable markets across the Nigeria, pineapples are sold.
