players journey: 5-step design framework for longterm engagement

If you owned stock in Starbucks and Apple, you'd be sitting on a 1000% return on your investment over the last 7 years. The phenomenal rise of these two companies is the result of clear focus on their brand marketing strategy, one which required a conscious split from traditional BRANDING based advertising, to marketing fit for the 21st century: BRAND EXPERIENCE. In this presentation, we'll look at the success story from the Starbucks side: a case study of how Starbucks became a loved brand like Apple and the 5 factors that underpin its class-leading marketing strategy.

Nintendo wants to target the ever growing big market of mobile games through its newest offering of “Super Mario Run” on IOS and Android platforms. The Super Mario game is not a new concept, but this game is released for the first time as a mobile app. Earlier this year, the release of the Pokémon Go app took the world by storm. The app quickly became the most downloaded app in history, and commanded a record audience of 45 million daily players. However Super Mario Run broke all records with its release on iTunes, Apple's platform in mid Dec 2016 with 2.65 Million downloads on the first day itself. Nintendo offered players to stop by their local Apple store before launch to try the game. Apple sold its billionth iPhone summer of 2017, leaving the app available to every user. This app not only boosted sales, but also introduced new people and the younger generation to the company, as well as its iconic characters. Nintendo increased its brand awareness among mobile app users. However, faced negative feedback from older generation of gamers on game features. In order to leverage current offerings and successfully expand into the mobile gaming industry this digital marketing plan provides suggestions on Nintendo's, Super Mario Run mobile game.

A Case for a new launch? Your client is one of India's oldest homegrown FMCG companies, TipTop Products. They have been key players in the Personal Care category for several decades, competing successfully with large multinational companies. They are currently present in the categories of soaps, shampoos, moisturizing creams, fairness products and talcum powder. They are focused in the northern and eastern parts of the country, although their products enjoy good distribution across India. Their products are popular both in urban (Tier 2) and rural areas. For the last 8+ quarters though, their growth has been stagnating. This is partly due to evolution of some of their key categories, as consumers seek other forms of Personal Care. TipTop's head of marketing has been studying this evolution of the market, and the changing consumer, and he feels that TipTop needs to revamp their product portfolio. He strongly feels that deodorants is a Personal Care category that TipTop needs to get into, because of its exploding growth and potential. Some of the other leaders at TipTop however, are not so sure. TipTop has hired you to help. Can you specifically answer these questions for them: 1. Should TipTop enter the Deodorants market? Would you look at a specific market segment or look at the overall market? Please provide your reasons based on the data provided. 2. If they choose to enter, what launch strategy would you recommend in terms of product type, distribution and marketing strategy? TipTop has provided some data for you to base your conclusions on. Please state what other types of data you might need." The deodorants category in India is booming. There are more than 500 deodorant brands in India trying to woo the consumer. These brands have around 1000 sub-brands or variants. The total size of the market is around 370 million dollars. While the market is largely urban (90% of volume), rural India is also catching up, and growth is faster than urban growth at 29%. The market is also very different for women versus men. Male deodorants contribute 69% to total volume. While the overall market has been growing at 18% year-on-year for the past 3 years, women's deos have seen faster growth - around 21%. The total fragrance category consists of deodorants, perfumes and body sprays. More data on key brand shares and distribution is given below.

If you work in design for behavior change programs, you’ve undoubtedly had a client request “gamification” as a way to jazz up their deliverables. Unfortunately, there often isn’t a deep understanding of what gamification is, why it can be effective, and why it might not always be the right choice. In this presentation, I take a step back to consider “gamified design” and the psychology behind how it can more effectively engage users and help them change behaviors. I then focus specifically on badges, one of the more popular game elements that is increasingly used in digital experiences as diverse as the Starbucks app (commerce), Duolingo (education), and Fitbit (fitness). New badge applications are being introduced all the time, but many of them won’t achieve their intended goals of changing behaviors because they were not designed in concordance with the underlying psychology. I provide a brief overview of self-determination theory, a unified theory of motivation that includes the universal psychological needs an engaging experience helps fulfill, and talk about how badges can fulfill each of these needs. Drawing on this theory as well as lessons from neuropsychology, universal design for learning, and behaviorism, I then talk about how badges can reinforce desired behaviors and discourage non-desired behaviors when applied thoughtfully. We look at common pitfalls in the application of badges in behavior change programs, and strategies to avoid those. Then we discuss best practices, rooted in psychology, for maximizing the efficacy of badges. Throughout, I’ll draw on case studies showing badges used well and poorly, highlighting the specific reasons why they work (or not). The content interweaves psychological theory and research with real-world examples to reinforce not just what works, but why.
