Borume Blasting Services
Borume Blasting Services is an afro-politan provider of
high value, cost-effective blasting solutions and technical
services for quarrying, mining, construction and pipeline
operations working directly with project managers and
field engineers to optimize blasting results.
We operate in South Africa, Mozambique, Botswana,
Tanzania, Ghana, Mali and Senegal.
Services provided through three in house
departments
• Technical services
• Training & Development
• Blasting Consumables sales
1. Technical Services
• Drill & Blast Audits
An independent drilling and blasting audit can reveal
un-recognized weaknesses in your drilling and blasting
operation. Using a combination of: field measurements,
observation of field practices, review of existing records,
and computer studies, we make recommendations on
how you can improve the safety and efficiency of your
drilling and blasting operation.
• Drill & Blast Services
Experience is everything in the Drill and Blast industry
and our experience working in areas ranging from large
open cast mining to small scale blasting in sensitive
areas has ensured we have the capability to tackle the
toughest of jobs safely and efficiently.
• Explosives QC Checks
You don’t have to take your explosives supplier’s word on
quality control of their explosives when you suspect you
are not getting the energy you are paying for. We carry
out quality control tests on explosives density and can
follow-up with in-hole continuous velocity of detonation
(VOD) measurements to verify explosives performance,
priming efficiency, and explosives reliability in all
applications.
• Seismic Monitoring
We carry out seismic monitoring for compliance
verification, blast analysis, and complaint resolution and
can carry out an independent review of your own seismic
monitoring records. Data can be used for development
of site specific scale distance graphs for prediction of
ground wave attenuation. We summarize our findings in
an un-biased report.
We can install a continuous 24-hour seismic monitoring
field station that can maximize the involvement of
professionals in your data collection process. Records
are transmitted immediately via cellular telephone or
satellite communications to your prime contact.
• Signature Hole Analysis
In dealing with neighbour complaints regarding blast
vibration, the most effective tool to use is “signature hole
analysis”. This process takes into account the influence
of the geology between the blasting area and the
neighbour’s home on the transmission of the blast
vibration waves. The seismic trace from the detonation
of one typical blast hole is fed into a computer program
that analyses the signature vibration and examines the
impact of specific delay intervals on blast vibration
amplitude and frequency. Timing windows where
destructive interference of the ground waves occurs are
identified and appropriate blast timing recommendations
are made. With the use of electronic detonators to
accurately target these timing windows, we have
observed significant reductions in blast vibration
intensity.
• High Speed Video
Analysis of high speed videos of blasts can identify the
following:
• Out of sequence firing of blast holes
• Reasons for abnormal backbreak
• Source of flyrock problems
• Reasons for poor fragmentation
• Impact of geology on blast results
• Reasons for poor performance of the explosives
• Stemming ejection and poor stemming practices
• Actual burden velocity is measured and used to
calculate optimum burden relief timing.
• Damage Complaints
We have extensive experience in public relations and
provide an independent analysis of damage complaints
from blasting. We carry out visits to concerned
neighbours to explain blast effects, review their
concerns, document and investigate alleged damage, and
determine if blasting could be at fault. We carry out
independent seismic monitoring at the property of
concern. We examine blast vibration records, blasting
logs, video records of blasts, etc. and make
recommendations based on our findings. We prepare
independent reports for submission to regulatory
authorities.
• Mine Permitting
As blasting experts, we assist with the permitting stage
of a new mine or quarry. We develop initial BMRs, blast
designs, cost estimates, explosives recommendations,
equipment recommendations, pit slope and haul road
design recommendations, as well as recommend
environmental controls. All recommendations are
summarized in a comprehensive report.
