where German paratroops were used in
masse,
 The first time the Allies made significant
use of intelligence from the decrypted German
messages from the Enigma machine
 The Allies were impressed by the potential
of paratroopers and started to form airborne-
assault and airfield-defense regiments
 In addition to troops, the Germans
employed some 600,000 motor vehicles and
650,000 horses.
The History of the Second World War – Liddell Hart
 The North African Campaign began in June of
1940 and continued for three years, as Axis
and Allied forces pushed each other back and
forth across the desert.
In November, Operation Torch brought in
thousands of British and American forces.

took over as commander of Allied forces.
While British troops in Egypt were pushing the
Germans west, U.S. forces under Major
General George S. Patton Jr. led the invasion of
French North Africa with the code name
Operation Torch.
 Rommel thus found himself between
American and British forces, and managed to
stall the Allies with a series of defensive
operations, most notably with the Battle of
the Kasserine Pass
The History of the Second World War – Liddell Hart
The main invasion force landed around Salerno
on 9 September on the western coast in
Operation Avalanche, while two supporting
operations took place in Calabria (Operation

 After more than four years of Nazi
occupation, Paris is liberated by the French
2nd Armored Division and the U.S. 4th
Infantry Division.
 German resistance was light, and General
Dietrich von Choltitz, commander of the
German garrison, defied an order by Adolf
Hitler to blow up Paris’ landmarks and burn
the city to the ground before its liberation.
The History of the Second World War – Liddell Hart
 The French 2nd Armored Division was
formed in London in late 1943 with the
express purpose of leading the liberation of
Paris during the Allied invasion of France.
 The failure of the operation drove Hitler
to demand further operations inside the
USSR of increasingly limited scope, all of
which eventually failed, such as Case Blue
and Operation Citadel.

 Hitler ordered the citizens of Germany
to destroy anything that the enemy could
put to good use. Embittered by defeats, he
later turned against the Germans
themselves.
 The surrender of Japan was announced
by Imperial Japan on August 15 and formally
signed on September 2, 1945.
The History of the Second World War – Liddell Hart
 On August 6, 1945, at 8:15 AM local
time, the United States detonated an atomic
bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
 Emperor Hirohito intervened and
ordered the Supreme Council for the
Direction of the War to accept the terms the
Allies had set down in the Potsdam
Declaration for ending the war.
The History of the Second World War – Liddell Hart
 The German invasion of Russia in June, 1941 has
opened the Eastern Front, and that is something
that would eventually lead to Germany's defeat
 The attack on Pearl Harbor in December, 1941
got the US into the war, changing the whole face of
the war
 Stalingrad, which destroyed much of the
German army and ensured that Russia would not
fall
 Midway, where much of the Japanese fleet was
destroyed and after this, the Japanese were on the
defensive for the rest of the war
The History of the Second World War – Liddell Hart
 The US emerged much richer than any
other nation; and by 1950 its gross domestic
product per person was much higher than any
of the other powers and it dominated the
world economy
 The UK and US pursued a policy of
industrial disarmament in Western Germany in
the years 1945–1948. Because of international
trade interdependencies this led to European
economic stagnation and delayed European
recovery for several years
