I really love the story because is so exciting and well constructed because
conduct to the reader in the story without stop in too much descriptions, also the
story and the environment (the communities) where is acclimated and the way
that works the society is so interesting and these aspects give to the reader a
free interpretation and point of view and we can reflect about moral aspects
very important in our lives ;and I really like the fiction science mixed with
dystopianism and this book has this (The author says that the world of “The
giver” is utopy , for me not, absolutely not). I add that for me this book is
everything less infantile.
4. What was your favorite passage of the story you read?
 "-I thought there was only us. I thought there was only now."-There's
much more. There's all that goes beyond--all that is
Elsewhere--and all that goes back, and back, and back. I received all of
those, when I was selected. And here in this room, all alone, I re-
experience them again and again. It is how wisdom comes. And how we
shape our future."
 "No, no," he said. I'm not being clear. It's not my past, not my childhood
that I must transmit to you. He leaned back, resting his head against the
back of the upholstered chair. It's the memories of the whole world, he

and generations before him."
 "I thought there was only us. I thought there was only now. -There's
much more. There's all that goes beyond--all that is Elsewhere--and all

and again. It is how wisdom comes. And how we shape our future."
 "The Giver shrugged.
Our people made that choice, the choice to go to Sameness. Before my
time, before the previous time, back and back and back. We relinquished
color when we relinquished sunshine and did away with differences. He
thought for a moment. -We gained control of many things. But we had to
let go of others."
 "Well ... "Jonas had to stop and think it through. "If everything's the
same, then there aren't any choices! I want to wake up in the morning
and decide things! A blue tunic, or a red one?"
 "The life where nothing was ever unexpected. Or inconvenient. Or
unusual. The life without color, pain, or past."
 "He found that he was often angry...that they were satisfied with their
lives which had none of the vibrance his own was taking on. And he was
angry at himself, that he could not change that for them."
 "So there will be a whole part of your life which you won't be able to
share with a family. It's hard, Jonas. It was hard for me.
"You do understand, don't you, that this is my life? The memories?"
Jonas nodded again, but he was puzzled. Didn't life consist of the things
you did each day? There wasn't anything else, really. "I've seen you
taking walks," he said."
 "Rarely. Only when they are faced with something that they have not
experienced before. Then they call upon me to use the memories and
advise them. But it very seldom happens. Sometimes I wish they'd ask
for my wisdom more often-- there are so many things I could tell them;
things I wish they would change. But they don't want change. Life here is
so orderly, so predictable--so painless. It's what they've chosen."
 "And then the people had access to them. Apparently that's the way it
was, once. Everyone had access to memories.
“It was chaos," he said. "They really suffered for a while. Finally it
subsided as the memories were assimilated. But it certainly made them
aware of how they need a Receiver to contain all that pain. And
knowledge."
 "Along with walking and eating and--" He looked around the walls of
books.

3. "Reading? That's it?" The Giver shook his head. "Those are simply the
things that I do. My life is here."

The Giver shook his head. He put his hands to his own face, to his chest.
"No. Here, in my being. Where the memories are."
 “They have never known pain, he thought.”
 "I didn't. I used my wisdom, from the memories. I knew that there had
been times in the past--terrible times--when people had destroyed others
in haste, in fear, and had brought about their own destruction."
 “If you were to be lost in the river, Jonas, your memories would not be
lost with you. Memories are forever”
 "The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It's the loneliness
of it. Memories need to be shared."
 “But if he had stayed ... His thoughts continued. If he had stayed, he
would have starved in other ways. He would have lived a life hungry for
feelings, for color, for love.”
“You suggested, Jonas, that perhaps she wasn't brave enough? I don't know
about bravery: what it is, what it means. I do know that I sat here numb with
horror. Wretched with helplessness.”
5. Make a list of the main characters of the story and write a brief description of
everyone of them.
Jonas: Is a sensitive, polite, compassionate twelve-year-old boy. At the
December Ceremony, he is selected to become the new Receiver of Memory,
the most honored position in the community. Jonas is quite complacent and
very disciplinant, before he begins his training as the new Receiver, but after
he gains wisdom from memories and realizes that people gave up their
freedoms for Sameness, he becomes angry and frustrated. During his training,
Jonas acquires very deep emotional feelings and learns about love. He
becomes a close friend of The Giver and risks his own life to save the citizens
from the ignorance in his community. He escape with Gabe for save the baby
from the release and looking the place out from the communities.
Mother Jonas': Is an intelligent, sympathetic, and understanding person. She
holds a prominent position at the Department of Justice. One of her job
responsibilities is to punish people for breaking the strictly enforced rules of the
community.
Father Jonas': is a shy, quiet, considerate, caring man. He is a Nurturer (and
He love be it), responsible for the physical and emotional needs of every
newborn child during the first few months of life. He is also responsible for the
release — killing — of infants who are deemed worthless because something
either emotional or physical, or both, is wrong with them.
Lily: Is the Jonas' younger sister she becomes an Eight during the December
Ceremony. She is a typically impatient child with straightforward, fairly simple
feelings and is overly talkative.

4. Gabriel (Gabe): Is a newchild (infant) who begins spending nights with Jonas'
family unit because he needs extra attention and care. Gabe is a sweet child
but does not sleep through the night and is not gaining weight as fast as the
other newchildren. He ends up sleeping in Jonas' room and is able to receive
memories from Jonas and escape with him.
The Giver: Is the current Receiver of Memory and trains Jonas to become the
next Receiver. Because he carries the burden of the memories of the world, he
suffers from the pain contained within the memories. He is lonely because he
can't share his work with citizens in the community, and he is cynical and
frustrated at times because he knows that the people gave up too much when
they chose Sameness. He loves Jonas and the people in the community and
have a big sadness because he lost to his daughter (Rosmeary).
Asher: Is the Jonas' best friend. He is a cheerful, friendly boy who makes a
game out of everything and is very funny, he only want enjoy. At the Ceremony
of Twelve, he is assigned to be Assistant Director of Recreation.
Fiona: One of Jonas' good friends (and possible love interest). Fiona is a very
pretty girl who is sensitive, intelligent, quiet, and polite. She is assigned to be a
Caretaker of the Old.
Larissa: Is an elderly woman who lives in the House of the Old. Jonas bathes
her when he volunteers at the House of the Old. While being bathed, she tells
Jonas about two elderly people who have been released recently. Later she is

Chief Elder: The leader of the community.
Rosemary: She was The Giver's daughter. Selected ten years earlier to
become the new Receiver of Memory, she began training with The Giver, but
after only five weeks, she asked to be released from the community.

Jonas is coming will fulfill a child twelve years of age more important in the life
of a citizen of the community, would assign its mission and this was very
concerned. The day of the ceremony after much mystery and concern he
announced that he had been chosen as the new receiver of memory. After a
year Jonàs understands that the life they lead in the community is not as perfect
and wants to run away with the giver to release all the memories but ends up
doing it with Gabe.

The concept of “memories” that is the center, and the way in the reader can
discover the truth about the communities and understand that the memories
make us sensible people and more wise and that the utopias never are so
perfects.
10. What did you dislike the most about the story? Write three lines at least.
I really wanted more, more about the giver and his story, for me that was the
most important character How was his live while Jonas went out from the
community ? The book is narrated in third person, and is good but the writer no
used that in her favor, she don`t explore with the characters.

12. Did the story remind you of something else you have read, watched or
listened to before?
“1984” by George Orwell, is a book that I find a really similar thematic: the
power of the memories, a government with a full control of everything, a main
character that want to be different, that understand that the way of live no is so
perfect like the government say.
13. What would you change in the story if you had the chance to? Write three
lines at least.
First, later of read the end I understand that is perfect.
“Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had
left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo.
“¡No is real music!” said Jonas excited while he held to Gabe and laughed
strongly, he understand that they were safe.
