3. Modern Bengali Literature
The earliest extant work in Bengali literature is the Charyapada, a
collection of Buddhist mystic songs dating back to the 10th and 11th
centuries.
Thereafter, the timeline of Bengali literature is divided into two periods −
medieval (1360-1800) and modern (after 1800).
In the middle of 19th century, Bengali literature gained momentum.

4. Modern Bengali Literature (continued..)
During this period, the Bengali Pandits of Fort William College did the tedious
work of translating the text books in Bengali to help teach the British some
Indian languages including Bengali. This work played a role in the background
in the evolution of Bengali prose.
This era also saw a rise in new literary publications, magazines and
newspapers.
A number of educational institutes also appeared all over the region. Both these
developments helped to nurture and advance the modern Bengali literary
movement.

5. Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay
Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay (1838–1894) is considered one of the
leading Bengali novelist and essayist of the 19th century.
His first novel Durgeshnandini, considered a benchmark in the history of
Bengali literature.
Kapalkundala (1866) is Chattopadhyay's first major publication.
Kamalakanter Daptar (1875) is one of his best known humorous sketches.

6. Rabindranath Tagore
Possibly the most prolific writer in Bengali is Nobel laureate Rabindranath
Tagore.
Of Tagore's prose, his short stories are perhaps most highly regarded. His
works are frequently noted for their rhythmic, optimistic, and lyrical
nature.
Some of the famous works of Tagore are “Sonar Tari”, “Gitanjali”, “Dak
Ghar”, “Raktakarabi”,“Gora”, “Ghare Baire” etc.

7. Kazi Nazrul Islam
Kazi Nazrul Islam, who was invited to post-partition Bangladesh as the National
Poet
He is frequently called the "rebel poet" mainly because of his most famous and
electrifying poem "Bidrohi" or "The Rebel“
Nazrul's writings explored themes such as freedom, humanity, love, and
revolution.
Nazrul wrote short stories, novels, and essays but is best known for his songs
and poems.
Some of the famous works of Nazrul are “Bandhan-hara”, “Agni-veena”,
“Byathar Dan”, “Yugbani” , “Bisher Banshi” etc.

8. Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay
Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, was a prominent Bengali novelist and short
story writer from the Indian subcontinent.
Most of his works deal with the lifestyle, tragedy and struggle of the village
people and the contemporary social practices that prevailed in Bengal.
Sensitive and daring, his novels captivated the hearts and minds of
innumerable readers both in Bengal and in the rest of India.
His best known novels include “palli Samaj”, “Charitrahin”, “Devdas”
“Nishkriti”, “data”, “Srikanta”, “Griha Daha”, “Sesh Prashna” “Sesher
Parichay” etc.

9. Manik Bandopadhyay
Manik Bandopadhyay was a Bengali writer and novelist, widely regarded
as one of the major figures and influential writer of 20th century Bengali
literature
He produced 36 novels and 177 short stories.
His important works include “Padma Nadir Majhi”, “Putul Nacher
Itikatha” “Shahartali” and “Chatushkone”.

10. Jibanananda Das
Jibanananda Das was a Bengali poet, writer, novelist and essayist.
Popularly called “Rupashi Banglar Kabi”.
Das wrote profusely, but as he was a recluse and introvert, he did not
publish most of his writings during his lifetime.
His notable works include, “ruposhi Bangla”, “Banalata Sen”
“Mahaprithibi”, “Shreshtha Kavita”.

11. Jasimuddin
Jasimuddin, popularly called “Palli Kabi” was a Bangladeshi poet, lyricist,
composer and writer.
His “Nakshi Kanthar Math” and “Sojan Badiar Ghat” are considered
among the best lyrical poems in the Bengali language.
Some of the works of him are “Rakhali”, “Baluchor”, “Dhankhet”,
“hashu”, “Beder Meye”, “Boba Kahini”, “Chole Musafir”, “Holde Porir
Deshe” etc.

12. Sufia Kamal
Begum Sufia Kamal was a Bengali poet and political activist.
Her first book of poems, Sanjher Maya .
Her first collection of short stories, Keyar Kanta
Though she called herself a romantic poet, her work more and more
reflected the struggles to preserve the Bengali language and culture and to
fight Pakistani rulers.
Some of the works of her are “Mrttikar Ghran”, “Ekattarer Diary” etc.

13. Akhteruzzaman Elias
Akhteruzzaman Elias was a Bangladeshi novelist and short story writer.
Despite writing only two novels, critics place Elias "in the pantheon of
great Bengali novelists".
Some short stories of him are “Dojokher Om”, “Onno Ghore Onno Shor”
“Khoari”, “Jal Shopno, Shopner Jal”, “Milir Hate Steingun” etc.

14. Selina Hossain
Selina Hossain is a Bangladeshi novelist.
Her major works include “Hangor Nodi Grenade” and “Poka Makorer
Ghor Bosoti”
Her novels and short stories have been translated into English, Russian,
French, Japanese, Korean, Finnish and Malay.

15. Humayun Ahmed
Humayun Ahmed was a Bangladeshi writer, dramatist, screenwriter, filmmaker,
songwriter, scholar, and lecturer.
His breakthrough was his debut novel “Nondito Noroke”
From his very first novel, his themes included the aspirations of average middle-
class urban families.
Ahmed wrote fictional series featuring recurring characters such as “Himu”,
“Misir Ali” and less frequently, “Shubhro”.
He wrote several novels based on the Bangladesh Liberation War – “Aguner
Poroshmoni” “Srabon Megher Din”, “Jyotsna O Jononir Golpo” etc.

17. Playwrights
After Rabindranath Tagore, two dramatists radically brought about a major
change in Bengali theatre.
One was Nurul Momen and the other was Bijon Bhattacharya.
Nurul Momen created the first modern and experimental plays from East
Bengal.
He is recognized as the pioneer of modern Bengali drama.

18. Novelists
Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay was one of the most popular novelists of
early 20th century.
Even long after his death many Bengali and Bollywood blockbusters were
based on his novels.
After him Tarashankar Bandopadhyay, Bibhutibhushan
Bandopadhyay and Manik Bandopadhyay were the three Bandopadhyays
who broke out into a new era of realistic writing style.

Humayun Ahmed is one of the most popular Bengali writers of fiction and
drama.
Seeds of Bengali science fiction are evident in the writings of Jagadish
Chandra Bose.
Professor Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, Humayun Ahmed and Abdullah-Al-
Muti are also very popular in this genre.
