Editor's Notes
The IPG is structured so anything that the opponent can't catch has a higher penalty (Game Loss), anything else is their responsibility too and Failure to Maintain Game State is here for this reason.
All Warnings given for the same Game Play Error can and should be upgraded to a Game Loss after the third offense.
Warning
A Warning is an officially tracked penalty. Warnings are used in situations of incorrect play when a small amount of time is needed to implement the corrective procedure. The purpose of a Warning is to alert judges and players involved that a problem has occurred and to keep a permanent record of the infraction in the DCI Penalty Database. A time extension should be issued if the ruling has taken more than a minute.
Why only a Warning :
“But that error was so huge it changed the whole course of the game ! He played his Day of Judgement for 2 mana and then Sun Titan! I am going to lose!”
more than a warning (Game Loss) is tough. Everybody makes mistakes (especially me).
both players are responsible of the game state. It is public, it is shared. Either player could have... and should have caught the error before it degenerated. (An error that an opponent can’t verify the legality of should have its penalty upgraded.)
A warning is too much!
If a player plays normally : no more penalty and mistakes
A warning is for tracking
An error that an opponent can’t verify the legality of should have its penalty upgraded.
These errors involve misplaying hidden information, such as the morph ability or failing to reveal a card to prove that a choice made was legal.
If the information needed to verify the legality was ever in a uniquely identifiable position (such as on top of the library or as the only card in hand) after the infraction was committed, do not upgrade the penalty and reveal the information if possible.
Backing up:
If you have sufficient information, you can reverse all actions that have taken place all the way to the error itself.
The Good : you are returning the game to it’s game state when the error occurred.
The Risk: there will be information divulged (even if no spells were played : “I know you have nothing!”) Also there will be some disruption because cards drawn are returned at random to the top of the library. Players could be unhappy.
Remarks : Drawing a card does not mean you cannot back up. Likewise one end of turn should not be a dead limit to backing up.
If you are confident of being able to back up the game completely and that this does not cause too much disruption, then do so (in a team, ask your team leader, L3 or HJ!)
“At regular too far to back up is too far to figure out, if you can make it work in regular then please do.”
When in a team it is vital to get the opinion of other team members since they can provide additional insight on a backup (if it is possible or too dangerous, for example I had a backup in legacy and it seemed simple however a fetchland had been cracked in the middle and I did not see it.)
Leave it alone :
When you are unsure of your back-up or it is plain impossible. Sometimes the risk clearly outweighs the good and backing up is doing a lot more wrong than right.
The Good : You do not make it worse! Players are educated and feel responsible.
The Risk : You are not fixing anything. The game stays corrupt. Players could be unhappy.
Note : If you choose to leave it as it is and the players are unhappy, remember that if anything goes wrong during a game both players always had the chance to catch it.
If the opponent ends up in a worse position due to a GRV it's partially their fault too, they had a chance to stop it.
The 3 exceptions of the IPG
It is an option. Sometimes it is better to back up completely. Sometimes it is better to leave it alone. Sometimes you want to fix the error as listed below .
• If a player made an illegal choice or failed to make a required choice for a permanent on the battlefield, that player makes a legal choice.
• If a player forgot to draw cards, discard cards, or return cards from their hand to another zone, that player does so.
• If an object changing zones is put into the wrong zone, the identity of the object was known to all players, and it is within a turn of the error, put the object in the correct zone.
The Good : It is simple to do and it is very intuitive.
The Risk : A partial fix locks them into the choices that they have made on an assumed game state. It can also give them the opportunity to make choices based on a game state that could have been different.
Keep in mind that those are not mandatory and are actually partial fixes. Only a full backup allows players to readjust their play based on the real game state. (again, with information from the “future”)
Recap :
Look if you can back up. If it is not too complicated and if you are confident with the backup you can go with it!
You can also consider if the partial fixes are applicable. If you think they do not affect the course of the game too much, you can use them!
If you are not confident or if you think the back up is too dangerous, and if the partial fixes are not applicable you should leave the game state as it is.
