This document discusses the history and evolution of the English language from Old English to Modern English. It describes how family trees were created to show how languages are related and how words in different languages with similar meanings, spellings and pronunciations (cognates) can indicate a shared ancestral language. The document also explains comparative reconstruction, which aims to reconstruct the original forms in ancestral languages, and provides examples of how sounds and words were reconstructed across language families. Finally, it outlines the major periods of English history: Old English before 1100, Middle English from 1100-1500, Early Modern English from 1500-1700, and Modern English after 1700.
Historical Timeline of Noteworthy Linguists.pptxmicahmariemg
The document provides a historical timeline of linguistics from ancient Sumerians to modern times. It covers many influential linguists and developments in various periods, including:
- Pāṇini who codified Sanskrit grammar in 400 BC in India, considered the first formal grammar.
- Saussure who proposed in the early 20th century that language can be analyzed as a system of distinct units and that meaning comes from relationships within the system rather than correspondence with reality.
- Chomsky who introduced generative grammar and emphasized the brain's role in acquiring language through innate linguistic universals.
- Developments also occurred in ancient Greece, Rome, the Middle Ages with grammars of Latin and other languages
Origins of Language and Language and the BrainJane Keeler
The document provides an overview of the nature and origins of human language. It discusses key aspects of language including that it is a method of human communication using structured words, has cultural variations in areas like body language, and generally conveys messages. The origins of language are explored including divine creation, natural sound imitation, physical adaptation of the vocal tract, and an innate language capacity. Key parts of the vocal tract that enable speech are identified. The brain regions involved in language like Broca's and Wernicke's areas are also examined. Various language phenomena such as aphasia, malapropisms, and tip of the tongue experiences are summarized.
Difference Between English And Arabic Basic Sentence StructureMajd Alh
This document compares and contrasts the sentence structures of English and Arabic. It notes that English only has verbal sentences consisting of a subject, verb, and object/complement, while Arabic has both verbal and nominal sentences. Nominal sentences in Arabic consist of a topic and comment with no verb. The document provides examples of translating sentences between the two languages and emphasizes that the order and rules of each language must be followed, not just direct word translations.
Development of Dictionary and Sources of new words in Modern English in 19th...Murk Razzaque
Modern English has obtained new words through various sources such as borrowing from other languages, combining prefixes and suffixes, and forming self-explaining compounds. New words have also been coined through deliberate invention and by combining common verbs with adverbs to create new meanings. In the 19th century, the Philological Society arranged for the publication of a new dictionary through Oxford University. Dr. Murray was selected as the editor and began work in 1884, though he passed away before completing the dictionary. It became well known as the Oxford English Dictionary for documenting the history, meanings, and variations of words.

Human beings have a one of a kind feature language. Languages differ from one another in many ways. Standard Arabic and Standard English, for example, are distinct yet similar languages. That is, these two languages were developed independently of one another. The Arabic language is Semitic, or Syro Arabian, in the same way as the English language is German. They do, however, share some language characteristics on all levels, including phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic. These topics are heavily influenced by the fields of Contrastive Linguistics and Comparative Linguistics. The differences in fundamental sentence form between Arabic and English, as well as how English and Arabic differ in sentence structure, will be examined in this article, as well as how this impacts Arab students learning English as a second language. When attempting to translate from Arabic to English and vice versa, one of the most common mistakes students make is using incorrect terms. Although English has borrowed vocabulary from other languages like French and Latin, it remains a Germanic language in its sounds, structure, and other phonological innovations it shares with other Germanic languages. One example is Grimm's Law, which describes correspondences between consonants in different Germanic languages. Additionally, a shift in accent placement in Proto-Germanic caused final unstressed syllables to weaken and disappear over time, making English words relatively short. As a result, even in the Old English period, the language occupied a peripheral position within the West Germanic branch.
This document discusses several key linguistic concepts:
1) Internal variation refers to different ways of expressing the same meaning within a language like "lorry-truck" or "underground-subway".
2) A dialect is a variety of a language spoken by a group that has systematic differences in structure or vocabulary compared to other varieties.
3) An idiolect is the unique variety of language used by an individual based on their personal vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciations.
