14. Editorial
“Bodhi Research Journal” is a journal that focuses on holistic sustainable
development. It provides an academic space for sharing the latest knowledge
and thinking on all sciences and practices of sustainable alternative development
among academicians, scientists, experts and field practitioners of alternative
development. The journal serves as a forum for discussion and advancing
development on creating a society that is at peace and harmony with itself,
with the environment and all living beings within it. The journal focuses on four
essential aspects of sustainable development which will be the main themes of
the first four issues of the journal. These four aspects are:
1. Education - The inaugural issue of the Journal published in September,
2010 carries this theme on education, ‘Bodhi seed in Thai Education
System - Returning to the Philosophy and Primary Objectives of
Education for Sustainable Development’
2. Creative Arts and Culture - A theme on creative arts and culture will
be carried in the second issue of the Journal.
3. Way of Life and Nature - The third issue of the Journal will feature
‘way of life and nature’ as its main theme.
4. Religions, Spirituality, Beliefs and Philosophy - The fourth issue of the
Journal wil feature the theme on ‘religions, beliefs and philosophy’.
1. Education - This aspect addresses the issue of how to create new
generations of youths who are ethically upright, who will form an ethically
conscious workforce that drives sustainable development. They will be able
to resist the profiteering type of capitalistic exploitation of resources. They
wil be capable of building a self-reliant community and country to meet
the challenges and protect from the devastating effect of globalization.
This is the main theme of the inaugural issue of the Journal published in
the month of September B.E. 2553, ‘Bodhi seed in Thai Education System

Sustainable Development’. Thanks to Professor Dr. Praves Vasee who kindly
contributed an article that he extracted from his special lecture given
at the academic seminar on education science reform. In this article
on education reform, he revealed the vision of ‘One University, One
Province’.
Professor Dr. Wiroon Tungcharoen, the Rector of Srinakharinwirot University,
contributed the article on “Crisis-free State through Sufficiency Economy”.
He highlighted the background and aspiration of the inception of College
of Bodhi Vijjalaya, and the need for transforming Thai education for the
advancement of humanity and crisis-free growth based on the philosophy
of Sufficiency Economy.
“University and Alternative Education”, an article contributed by Associate
Professor Amnard Yensabye, Vice-Rector of the Learning Network of
Srinakharinwirot University, provided another aspect of a fresh vision on
alternative education in correct training of the graduates who will be
equipped with entrepreneurial skil s and knowledge for developing rural
areas or their own community without the need to compete for a place
in the conventional labor market.
In this inaugural issue, you wil find more articles of current works on
producing “intellectual seeds (graduates)” in a number of education
institutions, both local and abroad. These include the education focusing on
Buddhist precepts and field project assignments of Srisa Asoke Community
in Srisaket Province; the education for advancement of humanity at Gong
Grai-lart Witthaya School in Sukhothai Province; and the education for
cultivating ethical conduct at Tzu Chi educational institutes in Chinese
Taipei.

16. 2. Creative Arts and Culture - Traditional arts and culture of local community
may be considered old-fashioned, not scientific or non-academic, or not
trendy by some. Some critics are of the opinion that working in arts and
culture does not contribute to development. However, arts and culture of
local community express the creativity and local knowledge and skills of
the local people. They reflect on the people’s respect for truth, goodness
and beauty of humankind, a part of nature. Arts and culture are both
tangible and intangible; they are part of us in our everyday life and
activities. Hence, why don’t we work together in creating arts and culture
that could lead to peace and non-violence; that could instill a spirit of
strong self-reliance; that could contribute to sustainable development by
way of preservation or conservation or any other ways? This would be a
theme for the second issue of Bodhi Research Journal .
3. Way of Life and Nature - Under the pretext of ‘pushing for growth, progress,
advancement, development’, human-beings have so aggressively exploited
nature for so long that we are actually getting the opposite - this world is
actually crumbling with severe life-threatening pollution, environmental crises,
natural disasters, climate change and global warming. Is it time now that
we, supposedly civilized people, should start nurturing mother earth back to
health? It is time for us all to work together in changing our way of life
to be back in accord with nature; protective of the ecosystem through
conservation of the earth’s resources and use of green alternative energy
and other such measures. In the past, we used to be able to live in
harmony with nature, supporting it and not destroying it as it supported our
lives. What has been happening between then and now? Harmony with
nature and how we live and advance in sustainable development would
be a theme for the third issue of Bodhi Research Journal.

17. 4. Peace with Religion, Spirituality, Beliefs and Philosophy - Some people may
declare that they are agnostics or atheists; still others are opposed to any
religious beliefs. Those who have faiths claim to find some form of peace
or solace in their faiths or practice. How do the agnostics, atheists and
those who are against any religious beliefs or practice find tranquility?
Bodhi Research Journal provides a space for critical discussion on religions,
beliefs (for or against), spirituality, and philosophy and their practice (mental
and spiritual cultivation); and how these contribute, positively or negatively
or not at all, to the sustainable development of human beings and their
society and environment. This wil be a theme for the fourth issue of Bodhi
Research Journal.
In addition to the above, Bodhi Research Journal also serves as a forum for
all to exchange their expertise and findings on sustainable development in line
with the following five objectives.
1. Bodhi Research Journal provides an academic space for lecturers, students,
practitioners and others to present their research findings, thesis and academic
articles on integrated sustainable development. This would contribute to
building up knowledge on alternative and sustainable development.
2. Bodhi Research Journal is also the journal for philosophers and intellectuals
and all interested parties to express their vision, their views and analyses
of the theory and practice of alternative or sustainable development.
3. The journal promotes and publishes findings from multidisciplinary studies,
integrated sciences and any sciences that focus on holistic development
that necessarily is multi and interdisciplinary in approach and practice that
encompass aspects of economics, politics, religions, arts, cultures, humanity,
natural resources, ecology and environment. It is a multidisciplinary journal
that publishes innovative research and applications that push further the

economically, culturally, ecologically and environmentally sustainable way.
4. Aims to be a leading international journal in latest research and advances
on the theory and practice of integrated and sustainable development of
the society and its cultures and traditions, human and material resources,
conservation and preservation of the ecology and environment.
5. Aims to be a journal synonymous with culturing and practicing ‘WISDOM’
in holistic sustainable development, as the name indicates.
The editors welcome contributions in social and other sciences of life
and development, and any innovative research works or critical reviews related
to the theory and practice of holistic sustainable development, particularly in
community-centered, culturally and ecologically sustainable and/or alternative
development, empowerment and development of communities, especially
community autonomy and self-reliance. The journal will be distributed to
all educational institutes, and learning centres of sufficiency economy and
sustainable development nationwide. You are welcome to send your articles to
