Our Industrial Packaging, Navi Mumbai Plant, Greases & Lubricants, Silvasa Plant and Leather
Chemicals, Manali Plant won the prestigious National Awards for Manufacturing Competitiveness
(NAMC), a unique Awards Program instituted by International Research Institute for Manufacturing
(IRIM). It was a Gold for IP, Navi Mumbai and a Bronze for both G&L, Silvassa and LC, Manali -
Chennai. Meanwhile SBU:Logistics bagged two Awards given away by reputed institutions in the
domain. BLOOM wishes heartiest congratulations to all the winners!
September witnessed the Annual General Meeting, the MoU Signing ceremony between Balmer Lawrie
and IIM Calcutta Innovation Park for selection and incubation of Start-ups, GST Outreach Programs, the
Hindi Pakhwara celebrations, Swachhta Hi Seva campaign, Vishwakarma Puja and so many other
events. Mr. Sunil Sachdeva was appointed as Non-Official Independent Director of the Company with

2. The 100th Annual General Meeting of the Company was held at Kolkata on 14th September, 2017.
During the financial year 2016-17 the gross turnover increased by 6.91%. The Company recorded
gross turnover of Rs.1,90,117 Lakh as against Rs.1,77,836 Lakh in 2015-16. The Company recorded a
Profit Before Tax of Rs. 25,411 Lakh in 2016-17 as against Rs. 24,021 Lakh in 2015-16, the increase
being attributable primarily to increase in Profits earned by Logistics Services, Travel & Vacations,
Leather Chemicals and Refinery & Oil Field Services Verticals. The Board of Directors recommended a
dividend at the rate of Rupees Seven per Equity share for the financial year 2016-17 for declaration by
the members at the 100th Annual General Meeting.

3. It was a proud moment for our Industrial Packaging Plant at Navi Mumbai, Greases & Lubricants Plant
at Silvassa and Leather Chemicals Plant at Manali, Chennai, when they won the National Awards for
Manufacturing Competitiveness (NAMC), a unique Awards Program instituted by International Research
Institute for Manufacturing (IRIM).
‘Start-up India’, a flagship initiative of the Government of India, was launched by the Hon'ble Prime
Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi. The initiative aims at fostering entrepreneurship and promoting
innovation by creating a healthy ecosystem conducive for the growth of Start-ups. In pursuance of
this, under the guidance of Hon’ble Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Skill Development and
Entrepreneurship, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, "Balmer Lawrie Start-up Fund", was launched in May
2017. In association with IIM Calcutta Innovation Park, Balmer Lawrie will be selecting and incubating
the start-ups jointly. Incubation support would be physical or virtual, depending on the need of the
Start-up and would include work space, knowledge resources, mentoring, networking, customer
connect, investor connect and seed funding. Capacity building boot camps to impart essential
knowledge on different aspects of business would be organized. To ensure success of this initiative, a
continuous mentoring and monitoring mechanism for Start-ups would also be put in place. Addressing
the media, Mr. Prabal Basu said, “Balmer Lawrie is extremely happy to associate with IIM Calcutta in
selection and incubation of Start-ups. Their experience, infrastructure and support will be of immense
value to make this initiative a success.” Prof. Ashok Banerjee said, “This is a great and timely initiative
of Balmer Lawrie. We are happy to be part of the process of choosing bright and sustainable ideas. IIM
Calcutta Innovation Park has the experience of incubating promising start-ups. Our mentoring
programme is appreciated by the start-up community. We hope that Balmer Lawrie will find our
support useful.”
4. IRIM is a professional body involved in supporting the manufacturing industry in various parts of the
world through research, consulting and training services. The awards process rates manufacturing
organizations on their ability to evolve the right competitive strategy along with their capability to
implement it. Manufacturing facilities are evaluated and rated by IRIM through its unique Manufacturing
Competitiveness Index. This rating is achieved through a structured assessment of the manufacturing
facility on 10 indicators of manufacturing competitiveness, which are building blocks behind the
calculation of this index. The assessment is customized for each facility by assigning unique weightage
to each of these indicators based on organization's priorities to become more competitive.
On-site assessment was done by IRIM Auditors for all the participating plants based on the 10
indicators of manufacturing competitiveness. The Awards function was organized by IRIM on 22nd
September 2017 at ITC Maratha in Mumbai. Our IP Plant at Navi Mumbai won the Gold award and our
G&L Plant at Silvassa and LC Plant at Manali, Chennai won the Bronze award. Schneider Electric Pvt
Ltd, Mahindra & Mahindra Farm Equipment and Ultratech Cement Ltd were awarded the winner, runner
up and 2nd runner up respectively for their respective plants. Gold award was won by 9 plants, Silver
award by 12 plants and Bronze award by 11 plants.
The Chief Guest for the event was Mr. T N Manoharan, Padma Shri Awardee (2010), Former President
of ICAI and Chairman of Canara Bank. Mr. Prabal Basu, C&MD, Balmer Lawrie was the Guest of Honour.
Apart from the distribution of awards, there was a Panel discussion on “Manufacturing Leadership at the
time of Disruption”. Mr D. Sothi Selvam, Director [Manufacturing Businesses], Balmer Lawrie was one
of the esteemed panel discussion members.

SBU: Logistics bagged an award in the ‘South Asia Maritime & Logistics Forum 2017’, which was held at
The Lalit Mumbai on 7th September 2017. The Award was given away in recognition of the CSR
initiatives taken by our company. Mr. Manas Kumar Ganguly, COO [Logistics], Mr. P P Rathnakar,
Regional Head - FF [West] and Mr. Rajesh Raghavan, Chief Manager [CFS, Mumbai] received the award
on behalf of Balmer Lawrie. Ex-Union Cabinet Minister, Shipping, Mr. Shatrughan Sinha, graced the
event. This was the first ever conference showcasing the Maritime strengths and potentials of South
Asian Nations. The event was attended by all the Industry Leaders in the Maritime & Shipping
Industries in India and South Asia. Congratulations to the team!
5. SBU: Logistics was the winner of the ‘International Logistics Leader’ award, given away by the Indira
Group of Institutes at the ‘Indira Brand Slam Summit & Awards’ on 26th September 2017 in Pune. The
award was received by Mr. P P Rathnakar, Regional Head - FF [West] and Mr. D B Sonawane, Head
Sales - FF [Mumbai] on behalf of the company. Balmer Lawrie also put up a stall at the venue for
knowledge sharing and promotion of services. Mr. N Dhamankar and Mr. S Verma were also present at
the event. Congratulations!
The first meeting of the Board of Directors of Visakhapatnam Port Logistics Park Limited, was held on
20th September, 2017 at the WelcomHotel Grand Bay, Visakhapatnam. Present on the occasion were
the Directors Mr. K Swaminathan Director [Service Business], Balmer Lawrie and Chairperson, Mr.
Shyam Sundar Khuntia Director Finance & CFO, Balmer Lawrie, Mr. P L Haranadh, I.R.T.S, Dy.
Chariman, Visakhapatnam Port Trust and Mr. A K Mehera, Chief Engineer, Visakhapatnam Port Trust.
Ms. Kavita Bhavsar, Company Secretary also attended the meeting. After the meeting, the Directors

6. Balmer Lawrie in association with the Central Board of Excise and Customs, Ministry of Finance, GOI
organised the “GST Outreach Programme – an interactive session with Commissionerate” on 4th
September, 2017 at Chennai. Stakeholders were present in large numbers and actively participated in
the workshop. Mr. K Srinivasan, IRS, Assistant Commissioner GST-Chennai addressed and explained
the key aspects of GST covering all the business verticals of the company and also for the society at
large. Dr. P Ravindran, renowned advocate with specialisation in indirect taxes and CA, and Mr. Vijay
Anand, an eminent Chartered Accountant and Tax Practitioner at Chennai also addressed the
participants. Mr. Prabal Basu, C&MD, Balmer Lawrie in his key note address emphasized on the
advantages of GST and the accomplishments of Balmer Lawrie. Mr. S S Khuntia, Director [Finance],
Balmer Lawrie in his welcome address spoke in details about the benefits and implications of GST for
the society, transparency in the economy, ease of doing business and the entire ecosystem with
reference to GST as Good and Simple Tax. He further explained the successful and on-time
implementation of GST in Balmer Lawrie.

Mr. S S Khuntia, Director [Finance], Balmer Lawrie in his key note address emphasized on the
advantages of GST in bringing transparency in the entire ecosystem of the economic environment of
the country and the achievements of Balmer Lawriens. He further explained the benefits and
implications of GST for the society, transparency in the economy, ease of doing business and the entire
ecosystem with reference to GST as Good and Simple Tax. Mr. Bharat Raichandrani, eminent Sr. Legal
Counsel having specialization in indirect taxes and GST at Mumbai also addressed the participants. The
programme was extremely interactive and the participants were enriched with the wisdom and
experience of the resource persons. The day long programme was moderated by Mrityunjay Acharjee,
AVP [Tax] and the vote of thanks was given by Mr. Sundar Sherigar, Head [SBU:IP].
7. A one day MSME workshop was organised at G&L, Kolkata for the employees and vendors on 21st
September 2017. The objective of the workshop was to get a clear understanding of the current MSME
Acts and enhance our public procurement process in line with the guidelines of Ministry of MSME, Govt
of India. MSME Development Institute, Kolkata conducted the workshop, which was a good forum for
raising queries and knowledge enhancement. The participants were addressed by Directors of MSME
Development Institute, Mr. S K Som - Dy. Director, Mr. R K Choudhary - Asst Director, Mr. C Biswas –
Asst. Director and Mr. R K Shetty – Asst Director. During the session interested vendors were
registered and MSME certificates were given away.
After successful completion of the first phase of SAP implementation in Balmer Lawrie, the next phase
has been initiated with Project E-Saksham, which would provide payroll solutions for Executives,
Officers, FTC and Unionised Staff, PMS and ESS solutions. In this regard, an ERP Core Team workshop
was organised in the Balmer Lawrie Training Centre at the Corporate Office in Kolkata from 6th to 9th
September 2017 in association with PWC, the implementation partner. The participants were addressed
by Ms. Manjusha Bhatnagar, Director [HR&CA] and Mr. S S Khuntia, Director [Finance]. Present during
the introductory session were Mr. A Ratna Sekhar, SVP [HR] and Mr. Abhishek Agarwal, CIO – IT.
Nominated core team members from all the four regions across the country were present in the
discussions regarding the current processes, which are followed in Balmer Lawrie with respect to
Payroll, Performance Management, Employee Self Service and Taxation.

theme of seminar was “Evolution of Logistics
and Supply Chain Management and its Growing
Significance to India’s Economy and Career
Opportunities”.
Vishwakarma Puja was celebrated with much fervour in units and establishments on 17th September
2017. C&MD and Director [HR&CA] visited the plants in the Eastern region, participated in the puja and

9. Ms. Manjusha Bhatnagar, Director [HR & CA] and Mr. K Swaminathan, Director [Service Business]
visited Chennai on 15th September 2017 for an HSE Review of the CFS Operations in Manali. Both the
Directors took a round of the yard and inspected the Container Freight Station. They gave valuable
advice and suggestions for further improvement of the Safety culture. The CFS team lead by Mr. R
Raghupathi gave a presentation to both the Directors on the HSE performance, key achievements in
the last couple of years and the key challenges for the unit in the coming years. During the visit both
of them planted saplings in the CFS premises.

12. On 15th September, 2017, a nationwide sanitation campaign “Swachhta Hi Seva” was launched by the
Hon’ble President of India at Iswarganj village in Kanpur. The President administered the Swachhta Hi
Seva Pledge whereby the Nation resolved to create a clean healthy and new India. Balmer Lawrie too
joined the movement and organized various cleanliness activities not only in its units and
establishments but also in the schools and villages near its factories. Various activities were organized
like the Swachh Karyasthal contest, Essay and Drawing competitions for school students, cleanliness
drives, Swachhta awareness sessions, distribution of dustbins, personal hygiene sessions for girl
students and distribution of sanitary napkins. Ms. Manjusha Bhatnagar, Director [HR&CA] and Mr. K
Swaminathan, Director [Service Business] were part of a program organized in a Primary School at
Manali, Chennai on 15th September. During the event around 800 soaps were distributed to the school
students, teachers and staff. In Silvassa, our Executives drove around in a Swachhta Rath to spread
