1) Slavery began in ancient times and a slave market was established in Portugal in the 15th century importing African slaves to work in North and South America. Whites owned and treated black slaves extremely cruelly, denying them rights and working them very hard.
2) During the Civil War in the 1860s, northern states fought to abolish slavery while southern states wanted to maintain slavery. The war lasted 4 years ultimately freeing slaves.
3) After the Civil War, Jim Crow laws were established between 1876-1965 creating legal segregation and discrimination against blacks, denying them equal opportunities and treatment. The Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s fought for equal rights for all.
This lecture is devoted to the Jim Crow Era. It relates the different civil rights cases that marked the beginnings of the era, and sheds light on black disenfranchisement in the Southern states as well as segration in both public and private spheres
