2. Tone and Approach
A Jazz Noir romance, ‘Black & Blue’ will pull stylistic
and tonal inspiration from 90s neo noir, jazz and Black
Romance films. The lead characters Black and Blue will
be placed in a world that feels timeless yet nostalgic,
calling upon the feelings of desire, yearning,
uncertainty and transience reflected in the script.
4. Black
A ruggedly handsome guy who cleans up nice, Black
is a musician by trade and bartender by night who
is passionate about his craft but even more
passionate about passion. Charming and warm, he
possesses an understated confidence that makes
women flock to him though his magnetism gets in the
way of pursuing the only woman who he truly wants —
Blue.
Costume: white button up or ribbed tank with
suspenders and dress pants
5. Blue
An effortlessly cool natural beauty, Blue’s
confidence is through the roof. Strong willed, and
independent, she does not chase, she attracts.
Black is her dearest friend and though she feels
for him deeply, she remains protective of her heart
and their friendship which means more to her than
their romantic potential.
Costume: black turtleneck or tank with classic
denim.
6. Exterior
The jazz club will be venue that has
neon lighting which can be enhanced
with kino flows and additional
practical lighting. We will utilize
wet pavement and haze to create an
atmosphere of a balmy late night in
the city.
7. The Bar
The bar of the venue
should feel like a
speakeasy but not ornate
— a step up from a dive
bar but not so nice that
it feels like a
nightclub. We will use
kinos and practical
lighting to enhance red,
blue and indigo light.
Subjects will be lit in
red, evoking the
feelings of passion and
love when they first
meet up with each other.
8. TheStage
Black and Blue come alive
together on the stage, it’s
where they feel most
connected, vulnerable and
expressive. We will play up
the blue lighting on the
stage and bring in a bit of
haze to illustrate the foggy
uncertain nature of their
connection.
9. Sparsely lit with cool
tones, the office
should feel like a
neutral space in
comparison to the bar
and stage. We can play
with shadows,
silhouettes and macro
shots to build the
intimacy of the scene.
The Office
10. Performance
Direction
Though this is a romance
film, a true friendship is
at the core. The connection
between the actors should
feel less like a “will they
or won’t they?” friends-
turned-lovers story and more
like a contemplation on how
they can transcend their
desires by allowing one
another to reach their
highest potential.
11. Piano-driven instrumental jazz
will be prominent throughout
the film. The song selection
should not feel connected to
any specific time period to
ensure the timeless tone is
consistent throughout.
