The commune of Bisoca is located in the northern part of Buzău County, at the foot of the Bisoca Mountains near the Râmnicul Sărat River. It is connected to the rest of the county by county road DJ204C. The only historical monument is the Poiana Mărului Monastery near the village of Bătlăgari, classified as an architectural monument of national importance. There is a dispute between Bisoca and the neighboring commune of Jitia over land boundaries and ownership of the monastery site. The name Bisoca comes from the Slavic word "vasocoi", meaning the locality is located at an altitude of around 1,000 meters
