From shining rubies and sapphires to emeralds and diamonds, many precious gems have been discovered
around the world and many more are probably yet to come. These gemstones are often associated with the
months and zodiac signs of the wearer and are therefore called birthstones. People are asked to wear these
stones in a particular metal to take advantage of them.
Additionally, because of their royal aura and extraordinary charm, wearing or possessing birthstone jewelery is a
highly coveted style that has been in vogue since the time of the Egyptian pharaohs.
So, whether you wear them to harness their energy and benefits or because they give a classy look to your
outfit, birthstone jewelry deserves all the space in your jewellery.
Also, if you are the owner of exclusive fine pieces like this one or want to gift them to your loved ones, our list of
some of the most spectacular birthstones is all you need. But before getting to that, how do you know which
birthstone is suitable for you?
How to choose your birthstone?
As the name suggests, birthstones are commonly associated with the months you are born in. They are also
based on zodiac signs and are classified into modern and traditional birthstones. Thus, you can choose yours
from either type.
Furthermore, a list of traditional birthstones initially originated between the 16th and 18th centuries. In 1912,
the Jewelers of America updated that list and released another one with modern birthstones. This list is revised
periodically. For this edit, we have mentioned the stones according to birth months.
Here are some fabulous jewellery that you can get according
to your birthstone
January – Garnet
Uncut and rough deep red rhodolite garnet gemstone
A January birthstone, garnet’s colour palette also spans hues like deep violet, green, yellow and orange beside
the most commonly found red. And when it comes to jewels, it looks especially stunning in rings, necklaces and
earrings.
Its name is derived from the Medieval Latin word granatus, meaning ‘pomegranate’. Because of its red color,
garnet is a lustrous gemstone that looks so attractive. It dates back to ancient times when garnets were worn in
elaborate necklaces. The birthstone is also known to have many healing properties such as balancing the root
chakras, regulating blood circulation, flushing out toxins from the body, and recharging your sexual energy.
A January birthstone, Garnet’s color palette also spans shades like deep purple, green, yellow, and orange next
to the most commonly found reds. And when it comes to jewelry, it looks especially stunning in rings, necklaces,
and earrings.
February – Amethyst
Amethyst is derived from the Greek word amethyst, which means ‘not drunk.’
Acclaimed for its deep purple hue, which ranges from a pale lilac shade, the February birthstone has long been
associated with royalty and was a highly favored jewel of kings and queens.
While this powerful gemstone signifies personal empowerment, higher intuition, inner strength and mental
clarity, it looks equally stunning when worn as jewellery. Be it a pair of beautiful earrings, a diamond and
sapphire necklace, or a beautiful ring, one can never go wrong with this stone.
March – Aquamarine
Originating from a Latin word meaning ‘seawater’, an aquamarine comes in a blue to pale greenish-blue color
palette and is a member of the beryl family. In ancient times, sailors used to carry this stone, believing that it
would keep them safe at sea and make them invincible.
In modern times, the March birthstone is known to protect, enhance intelligence, and bring marital bliss. Its
waters-esque cool look and royal aura in fine jewelry have always graced royals like Queen Elizabeth II and
Meghan Markle. This makes it a perfect stone for fine jewelry like rings, earrings, and even tiaras.
April – Diamond
The gem has been a prestige symbol for centuries and is prized for its spectacular beauty, clarity, and brilliance.
The name comes from the Greek word adamas, meaning ‘invincible’, which refers to the hardness of diamonds.
Diamonds are one of the most coveted assets to date and look stunning in any design and look. The April
birthstone is a symbol of strength, longevity, and eternal love. No wonder the universal symbol of marriage and
love is often the diamond engagement ring.
May – Emerald
The May birthstone emerald is believed to enhance the intelligence of its wearer and promote healing. Its name
is rooted in Ancient Greek and originated from the word Smaragdos which stands for ‘Green Gem’. Emerald has
been one of the most desired gemstones since the time of the ancient Egyptians.
From enchanting Egyptian Queen Cleopatra to being the centerpiece of the crown of the Andes, the emerald
has been revered by the highest royalty and continues to fascinate many to this day. The stunning green of an
emerald always looks rich and remarkable, no matter what type of metal it is associated with.
June – Pearl, Alexandrite, Moonstone
You’re surely a lucky one if you’re born in June. This is because this month has three birthstones, which gives
you more than one jewellery option to choose from. They are pearl, moonstone and alexandrite.
Pearls are highly desirable for jewellery and are hailed for their timeless charm. While pearls are believed to be
‘teardrops fallen from heaven’ for the Middle Easterners, their origin according to ancient Chinese lore is
credited to the brain of a dragon. Representing purity, honesty, wisdom and simplicity, pearls are available in a
lot of shapes, sizes and hues.
Alexandrite is one of the rarest gems in the gem world, due to its remarkable color change when viewed in
different light. From exuding a red to purple hue in incandescent light to appearing green to blue in daylight,
this rare June birthstone was first discovered in Russia and named after Alexander II was.
Finally, the moonstone, which is prized for pubescence (an optical phenomenon of a milky blue glow that
appears to move when the stone is turned), gives the impression of moonlight floating on water. It is believed
to bring luck to its wearer and is associated with fertility and femininity.
July – Ruby
Ruby is the king of gems and crowns your entire jewelery chest like no other. Its name is derived from the Latin
word ruber, meaning ‘red’ (the color of passion and love). Its color ranges from deep red, with a hint of purple,
to red with pink and orange.
Ruby has been a symbol of different things in different cultures. However, they have always been regarded as
one of the most famous gems everywhere. From being a symbol of strength, protection and vitality to
bestowing wisdom, wealth and peace to its wearer, rubies have always been considered lucky. And as beneficial
as they are considered, rubies look just as classy and luxurious when worn as adornments.
August – Peridot
Peridot is the modern August birthstone which is a yellow, lemon-green gemstone variety of the mineral olivine.
The name of this gemstone is derived from the Arabic word faridat, which means ‘gem’.
It has been a valuable stone since ancient and medieval cultures and was used for centuries as a protective
amulet, especially to ward off evil spirits at night. Peridot birthstone has emotional and psychological healing
properties and works directly on the heart chakra.
September – Sapphire
An attractive stone whose name is derived from the Greek word sapphiros, the September birthstone sapphire is
one of the very popular and most treasured gemstones. While it comes in a lot of colors, the most worn and
loved one is undoubtedly the gorgeous blue.
Sapphire has long been associated with royalty (like Kate Middleton who wears the sapphire engagement ring
that once belonged to Princess Diana) and aristocrats since ancient times and still captivates the hearts of
everyone today. Traditionally, they have been a symbol of honesty, nobility and fidelity and are believed to have
healing properties and protect their wearer from physical harm. The more this gem is surrounded by mysticism,
the more extraordinary it looks when worn in the form of gems, especially rings.
October – Opal, Tourmaline
Born in October enjoy the beauty and spaciousness of two birthstones – opal and tourmaline. Opal is derived
from the Sanskrit word Upala, which translates to ‘a precious stone’. This became the opalus in ancient Rome.
Treasured and beloved for its dramatic rainbow-like play of colors, opals are sometimes compared to galaxies,
volcanoes, and fireworks. They are also associated with light and magic. Thus, they are known to bestow the gift
of protection, prophecy, luck, and healing to their wearer.
Available in countless varieties and colors, the modern October birthstone tourmaline derives its name from the
Sinhalese word toramalli, which stands for ‘stone mixed with colors’. Because of its many colors, it was believed
by ancient mystics that the stone inspired artists and their creativity as it had a color for every mood.
Pink, green and blue-violet tones are some of the most sought-after tourmaline colors for jewellery.
November – Topaz, Citrine
Like October, those born in November are lucky to wear and show off two birthstones. Desired for its cool
yellow and orange colors, citrine is a beautiful variety of crystalline quartz. Associated with healing and
happiness, this gemstone is believed to bring warmth and relaxation to its wearer.
The second November birthstone similar to citrine is topaz, which comes in a wide variety of colors like light
blue, orange, pink, yellow (the most popular one), and brown. The stone was favored by both the ancient Greeks
and Romans for its ability to bestow strength, wisdom, and healing to its wearer.
December – Turquoise, Tanzanite
The December birthstone tanzanite was discovered in Tanzania and has a hue ranging from rich blue to deep
violet. This gemstone is believed to impart its wearer with spiritual awakening, enhanced intuition, and higher
consciousness. After its discovery, it was promoted by Tiffany & Co. in 1968 in an advertising campaign.
These birthstones include not only transparent gems but also various opaque varieties. It has been favored since
the time of ancient Egyptians and is liked by fans of the turquoise hue.
Believed to have beneficial powers and bring good fortune and well-being to the one who wears it, this
gemstone looks classy in jewellery pieces like rings, brooches, earrings, and dainty necklaces.

  • 7. June – Pearl, Alexandrite, Moonstone You’re surely a lucky one if you’re born in June. This is because this month has three birthstones, which gives you more than one jewellery option to choose from. They are pearl, moonstone and alexandrite.
