This speeds up product delivery, reduces costs, and increases consumer benefit. Two main formats are micro well systems and microfluidic systems. Microwell systems involve testing samples in small wells in plates, while microfluidic systems use channels to manipulate fluids in the micrometer range. These techniques are being applied to areas like bioprocess optimization, molecular biology procedures, diagnostics, drug discovery, and more. Microfluidics is revolutionizing fields and its market is projected to reach $6 billion by 2020. Future applications may involve nanofluidics which deals with even smaller nanometer scale fluids.

Nanomanufacturing is both the generation of nanoscaled materials, which can be powders or liquids, and the assembling of parts "base up" from nanoscaled materials or "top down" in littlest strides for high exactness, utilized as a part of a few advances, for example, laser removal, drawing and others. Nanomanufacturing varies from atomic assembling, which is the produce of complex, nanoscale structures by method for nonbiological mechanosynthesis.

This document summarizes an REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) project involving the development of a micro-manufacturing system for automated micromanipulation. Students were divided into four teams focused on different components: microparts fabrication, 3D vision system, microgripper, and robotic platform. While full automation was not achieved, the components developed a semi-autonomous prototype. Student surveys found the hands-on research experience strongly increased students' interest in STEM careers. Continued funding is sought to further develop the system.
MEMS are tiny integrated devices that combine mechanical and electrical components on a micro scale. They are able to sense, control and actuate on a micro scale but generate effects on a macro scale. MEMS utilize various fields including design, engineering, materials science and electrical engineering. Current MEMS devices include sensors in airbags, inkjet printer heads, and blood pressure sensors. MEMS are fabricated using deposition, patterning, and etching processes and are used in applications such as automotive, medical, military, and consumer electronics.
Unraveling the Secrets to Optimizing Yield in Semiconductor Manufacturing.pptxyieldWerx Semiconductor
The semiconductor manufacturing industry is undergoing significant changes to address various challenges such as environmental sustainability, climate change, and the shift towards decentralized societies.
Green nanotechnology aims to develop clean nanotechnologies that minimize environmental and human health risks. It focuses on designing environmentally benign nanoparticles and green methods for large-scale production. The goals are to test nanoparticles for toxicity and redesign as needed, develop single-solvent phase production methods that control particle size and properties, and discover efficient approaches to integrate nanoparticles into novel devices. A marriage of nanotechnology and green engineering could make new nanotechnologies clean from the start and allow green technologies to use nanotechnology to boost performance in a more sustainable way.
2. Bionanomanufacturing
technology platforms
One of the major challenges of this century is the development of
new industrial products and processes built upon the three pillars of
sustainability – social equality, economic viability and environmental
protection.
The technology platforms of biotechnology, nanotechnology,
microtechnology and ultra-precision metrology are the key
to promoting sustainable development, ensuring competitive
advantages for companies. These platforms are the foundations of the
Bionanomanufacturing laboratory that is beginning its operation at
IPT’s new facilities.
Integration
The multidisciplinary nature of these platforms allows for the creation
of integrated technological solutions.
Nanotechnology offers new possibilities for scientific and
technological development, reducing the time and size scale, allowing
for the intensification of chemical, physical and biological processes,
and enhancing product quality and functionality.
Biotechnological processes are highly advantageous in that they are
environmentally friendly, consuming less energy and favoring the use
of renewable raw materials.
Advances in micromanufacturing processes enable the application
of nanotechnology for the development of biosensors for health
and environment-related areas, microreactors for chemical
applications, miniaturized conventional analytical techniques,
microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), nanoelectromechanical
systems (NEMS), and others.
Ultra-precision metrology is employed not only in the diagnosis and
development of bio-, nano- and microtechnology products and
processes, but also in highly advanced services to Industry.
Partnerships
Bionanomanufacturing at IPT thus enables the integrated and
sustainable development and application of these technologies,
responding to market demands. Different types of projects, such
as R&D&I, consulting and technology services, can be developed in
partnership with companies, with various types of funding, including
non-refundable resources from Brazil’s National Research and
Industrial Innovation Company – Embrapii.
IPT staff is available to discuss partnership opportunities.
