Dr. Samuel Hahnemann was born in 1755 in Germany. He studied medicine and became interested in chemistry. Through experiments on himself with Peruvian bark, he discovered the principle of similia similibus curentur, or "like cures like," founding the system of homeopathy. He published his Organon of Medicine in 1810, outlining homeopathic theory and practice. Hahnemann practiced homeopathy for many years, gaining recognition, and moved to Paris in 1835 where he continued his work until his death in 1843.
2. Birth and Early Life:
•Hahnemann was born on 10th April,1755 at Meissen,
Germany.
•He was the third child of Christain Gottfried Hahnemann
and Johanna Christiana.
•His father taught him moral of life “Prove all things, and
hold fast that which is good.”
•On 20th July 1767, he was sent to town school.

4. •In the 16th year, he was shifted to Prince’s School.
• In this school he learnt many languages.
• Due to family’s poor status, he had to work as a labourer in a
porcelain factory.
• He was re-admitted to Prince’s School as the school staff
collectively supported his education.
• In 1775 at his school leaving ceremony, Hahnemann gave an
oration in Latin -‘The wonderful contruction of human hand’.
•In the same year, he joined Leipzig University for his medical
studies.
5. •He made his living as a translator and teaching various
langauges to his fellow students.
•He moved to Vienna and joined Brothers of Mercy hospital.
•Dr.Von Quarin gave him therapeutic hints.
•At the age of 24, he receive his Master’s degree on 10th
August 1779 from Erlangen University.
•In the same year, he wrote thesis on ‘A consideration of
etiology and therapeutics of spasmodic affections’.
•He translated about 1200 pages (4 books) from English to
German, during this period.
6. •In 1781 AD, he started his medical practice in the town of
Hettstad.
•His interest moved to Chemistry and so translated many
books.
•His works was published in the magazine named ‘Kreb’s
medical obeservation’.
•His works include:
⮚On arsenic poisioning
⮚Ascertaining purity of wine & drugs.
7. •On 17th November 1782 AD, he married Johanna
Leopaldine Henrietta Kuchler.
•They had 11 children.
•He reported to Hufeland,
“I have been putting drugs of which I know little into
the bodies of which I know less; so I can but renounce the
practice of medicine that I may no longer incur injury.”
•Between 1785-1792 AD , he translated around 4700
printed pages.
•In 1789 AD he moved to Leipzig and released ‘Friends of
Health’.

9. Discovery of Homoeopathy:
•In 1790, he translated the book ‘A treatise on Materia
Medica’ by Dr. William Cullen.
•Experiment of Peruvian bark on himself.
• He was the 1st to set the trend of human drug proving.
•In 1792, he accepted the post as in-charge of asylum at
Georgenthal.
•Not only Cinchona, he experimented other medicinal
substances more specific to certain diseases.
10. •Hahnemann understood that medicines cures diseases
because they can produce similar symptoms in a healthy
individual.
•So he came to a conclusion and formulated the
Homoeopathic law ‘similia simibus curentur’
•1796 was the golden year for Homoeopathy.
•In the same year, he published ‘An essay on a new
principle for ascertaining the curative power of drugs
and some examination of previous principle’ in
Hufeland’s journal .
11. • R.E.Dudgeon commented “Cinchona bark; which was
to him what the falling apple was to Newton and the
swinging lamp in the baptistery at Pisa, to Galileo.”
• Between 1790-1805, he published around 5500 printed
pages of work.
• In 1810, he published his 1st edition of Organon of
Medicine.

14. After The Publication Of Organon Of
Medicine:
•His lectures on homoeopathy were complied into a book
called ‘Lesser Writings’.
•In 1811, the 1st volume of ‘Materia Medica Pura’ was
published.
•On 31st March 1830, his wife Johanna died.
•On 8th October 1834, he met a French lady Marie
Melanie De Hervilly.

16. •On 28th January 1835, they got married and soon
moved to Paris.
•In 1836 AD, he was granted permission to practice
Homoeopathy in Paris.
•Soon he got recognition, success, honour and money.
•He maintained a very busy schedule of eating, sleeping
and seeing patients.
•He wrote a letter to Boenninghausen saying “I’m at
work on the 6th edition of Organon to which I devote
several hours on Sundays & Thursdays, all other time
being required for treatment of patients who come to
my rooms”.
17. Final Days of His Life
•Hahnemann died on 2nd July 1843 at 5 am due to
bronchial catarrh.
•He was buried in the Cimetiere du Montmartre now
called artist’s quarter.
•In 1896, his coffin was moved to Cimetiere du Pere
Lachaise.
18. •In the same place, his statue was erected with the
following inscription,
“Standing between the inorganic
And the organic world
Uniting them for the benfit of the sick;
Earning towards eternity
Samuel Hahnemann
Benefactor of the mankind.”
