UK Biobank Limited (company no 4978912) is a registered charity in England & Wales (1101332) and in Scotland (SC039230)
12 November 2014
To whom it may concern:
UK Biobank is a large prospective study in the United Kingdom set up to investigate the role of
genetic factors, environmental exposures and lifestyle in the cause of major diseases of late and
middle age. Between 2006 and 2010 UK Biobank recruited 500,000 individuals aged between
40 and 69 years to take part. Each participant provided blood and urine samples, information
on health and lifestyle, undertook a series of physical measures, and consented to allow linkage
to their medical records.
Since baseline recruitment, UK Biobank has undertaken / is in the process of running a series of
enhancement projects including Repeat Assessments, Activity Monitoring, SNP Genotyping,
Biochemical Analysis and Imaging (MRI / DeXA / Ultrasound). In parallel, data linkage and
outcome adjudication projects are underway.
The samples and data generated from original study and these enhancement projects are made
available to researchers across the world in line with UK Biobank’s mission of “…facilitating
research into the causes and treatment of disease by acquiring, storing and protecting high
quality biological samples, associated participant, health and lifestyle information, and derived
sample data”.
During the week of 13th
– 17th
October 2014 Chris Winterburn, having approached me directly to
request a work placement, attended the UK Biobank site in Cheadle and assisted with a number
of projects.
During his time here, Chris:
• Worked, under the instruction of the Project Manager for the Imaging Enhancement
Project to review, analyse, and summarise in a report, the image quality review
information provided by one of our (external) expert radiologists
• Worked, under my instruction, to carry out analysis of subsets of the haematology data
generated at Baseline and during the Repeat Assessment Project
• Assisted, under the instruction of the Operations Manager, with stock take and sample
shipping
Chris also spent time with several of our Biochemical Scientists and Geneticists to understand
their background, education and career paths with a view to informing his own career choices.
Chris was professional, courteous and confident both in his interactions with UK Biobank staff
members and in his approach to the tasks set. He demonstrated an ability to work
independently and with others, and showed a genuine interested in the aims and work of UK
Biobank; the documents (reports / spreadsheets) he created met the brief he was given, were
well-considered and well-constructed, and are useful documents which will be used. Chris was
always smart, punctual and reliable.
Feedback from those with whom Chris spent time during his work placement has been uniformly
positive and complimentary. We wish him well in his continuing education and future career.
Yours faithfully
Dr Simon Sheard
Operations Director
