1. Biography
Born and raised in Hood River, OR, Sophia Zega was instilled with a love for nature, science, and art at a
very early age. She attended the Columbia Gorge Dance Academy for 13 years training in Ballet, Modern,
and Jazz, dancing in the Company for two years before moving to the Hudson Valley as a student in
Dance and Biology at Bard College. There she participated in classes, workshops, and performances led
by the New York Lives Arts-Bard College partnerships with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane and Trisha
Brown Dance Companies for four years. In her second year she performed as a featured soloist with the
Carolyn Dorfman Company at Kaatsbaan Theatre in Tivoli, NY and in her third performed alongside
other Bard Dancers in a restaging of Svi Gottheimer’s “Chairs” at Bard College's LUMA Theatre.
Additionally, she was a soloist in Jamie Drastik’s video “The Decision” in 2014. Three of her own works
have been presented by the Bard College Dance Program, and she self produced an evening-length work
during her last semester there. In the past summers she’s worked as a wildfire fighter, trail builder,
windsurfing instructor, dance teacher, and farmer, all of which has informed her art making and
dancing; she holds a deep passion for the last three and hopes to continue them in the future. Sophie is
an outdoor enthusiast and naturalist, taking the majority of her artistic inspiration from natural p laces
and the act of inhabiting them. In her spare time, she voraciously trail runs, road bikes, backpacks, hikes,
kayaks, climbs, skis, and is always searching for adventure. Although she received her education in New
York, she intends to live, research Molecular-Medical Biology and Field Ecology, and create art wherever
she goes, and intends to eventually settle on the West Coast.

Jak Weibershield—Windsurfing Instructor and Gear Tech Summer 2015
When instructing, I always had to pay close attention to my students to anticipate and interpret their
needs while conveying new information and skills in a relatable way; I too was their life guard on the
water and always had to be extremely mindful of everyone’s safety. Additionally, because I was teaching
the same lessons every day, I had to find ways to be invested in every class and make the repeated
experience new for myself to remember how new it is for those I’m teaching.
Dr. Ruth S. Day—Memory for Movement Research Staff Assistant Summer 2016
In addition to participating in the American Dance Festival as a Six Week School student, I held a Staff
Assistant position in the M4M office. My responsibility was to collect data by observing a variety of
modern technique classes six times a week and quantifying how instructors handle memory cues and
memory load when teaching set movement.
4. Related Courses
Majors: Dance and Biology
Advanced Ballet, Advanced Modern, Dance Composition 1-3, Repertory with various Bard faculty,
students, and related artists, Dance History, Dance Program Senior Seminar.
In the spring of 2015 I’ve participated in a cast of students performing “Chairs” by Zvi Gotheiner,
rehearsals run by Zvi and Maria Simpson, performed at Bard College LUMA Theatre.
I also participate in student and faculty projects throughout the year, including my own work,
volunteering on average 15 hours a week outside of class.
