Big Talk From Small Libraries 2024: Farmer’s Day Fundraising
- 1. Farmer’s Day Fundraising Amber Sweetland, Library Director Kimball Public Library Kimball, Nebraska
- 2. City of Kimball, NE Population: approx. 2,500
- 3. Need for Fundraising • ½ cent tax reduction • Loss in $30,000 of projected revenue
- 4. What is Farmer’s Day? • Anniversary of Kimball (our Founder’s Day) • 3-Day Celebration • Last weekend in September • Activities throughout the weekend • Library needed to be involved • 2 staff joined Farmer’s Day Committee • Timing of our activities coordinated around other events
- 5. Friends of the Library Book Sale • Hosted annually, always a hit! • Important to clear space in storage • Lots of work but needed and appreciated by the community • Took advantage of crowd that book sale brought to host and promote other activities in the library which this led to other fundraising efforts
- 6. Friends of the Library Craft Sale • Local Vendors • Expansion of the gift shop we have in the library already • Not huge money maker for friends, but drew in more people • Supports local businesses and crafters
- 7. Annual Bake Sale • Successful in past • Brings in funds • Timed well during a lull between other town activities • Adjusted method of packaging
- 8. Salsa Contest • Salsa contest in past • This was our second year re-integrating it • How we ran it (red and green) • $2 to taste and vote • Blind tasting
- 10. Pie A City Guy • Born out of a staff brainstorm session • Raffle tickets ahead of time • Don’t ask anyone to do something you aren’t willing to do too! • Will likely make adjustments for next year
- 12. Additional Activities to promote the Library (non-fundraising) Parade
- 13. Additional Activities to promote the Library (con.) Mario Kart Tournament
- 14. Advertise, advertise, advertise! • Map and fliers on sandwich boards, social media, newspaper column, radio interview, word of mouth
- 15. Key Takeaways • Not possible without amazing staff • It’s a lot of work, but fun, and so worth it! • Enthusiasm goes a long way • Advanced planning • Good communication with city groups, planning committees, staff, and the community • Patrons love to help, give them a chance to participate

- Friends of the Library Book Sale Always a big fundraiser, but a ton of work for mostly staff
- Vendor/Craft Sale New this year, very successful
- Bake Sale Did in years past, we know is liked among the community, and will bring in funds, people came in looking for certain items that were available last year
- Salsa Contest Restarted this contest last year, know it is popular, and brings in some funds, but not a lot
- Pie a City Guy New this year, not sure how it would work out, trouble getting someone from each department to agree
- Advertising before, and day of Fliers Radio interview Map Word of mouth, be loud!
- Take away from all of these things Advanced planning Tons of work Fun People loved it The key to all of these things We have the best staff in the world Everyone went home Friday night and baked more things to sell Hard work but fun, make sure it is fun for the staff, be enthusiastic, and make sure you do your part Totally worth it Even if you don’t bring in thousands of dollars the key is getting the word out that there is a need. Show that you are there, and highlight the things the library is doing that are less known. Be charming, if at all possible, it helps.
