Tanner Cotton(Director), and
Connor Craft(Lights)
2. Sets (Environment)
● The environment in which the play, “Big Love”, will take place is one
that starts in a bathtub and then moves into a terrace facing a painted
ocean. Since the characters will be displaying a rich lifestyle, the
material used in creating the set will be of luxurious appearance.
● A bubbly bathtub will be introduced in dim lighting with the character
Lydia in it.
● All these scenes will take place in a proscenium arch stage to allow for
the setting of the scene to change behind the curtains.
3. Sets ( Mood and Style)
● To set the mood and style of a modern posh Italian lifestyle, materials of
high quality brands will be used. Marble floor will be used and the
material of everything will be of the finest.
● Since the play takes place in Italy, Italian building architecture will be
designed to set the mood of an Italian residence near the oceanside.
4. Sets (Realistic from Non-realistic)
● We want the play to have a realistic feel so to accomplish that the set
design will have a painted ocean in the background and then light effects
will be added to resemble the bright sunny day as it is described in the
play.
● Also, for the play to have a realistic feel, props will be introduced such
as a bathtub, palm trees, wine bottles, cigars, and a terrace table. To
introduce the helicopter from the a play, a projector screen will be used
to have a scene of a helicopter landing.
5. Sets (Locale and Period)
● The location of the play is outside in a terrace next to the ocean in Italy.
o When conveying the location elegant...
● The time period of the play is during the modern times.
o To establish a modern time period in which the play takes place,
items of well known italian brands will be used. Wine bottles and
materials placed in the set will be of fines.
6. Sets (Design Concept)
● The design concept of the play will be one that focuses on a luxurious
lifestyle. Throughout the play the set design will portray the posh
lifestyle in modern times in which the characters are living.
● The design will center around the three main women in the play: Lydia,
Olympia, and Thyona. Since the play focuses on women gaining
independence all aspects of the play, from the lighting set on them to
the costumes worn, will be centered around them.
7. Sets (Central Image)
● The central image of the play would be the terrace with the ocean in the
background.
● The play takes place in modern times and the set will not only reflect
that but also the modern customs that are enjoyed in other countries
where women can be independent.
● With the help of the set design the audience will be able to see that
women want to make their own choices and that they want to break
away from family customs which arranged marriages for money, political
connections, and status.
8. Sets (Coordination)
● In order for everything to be coordinated with the stage setup, light and
special sound effect will need to be consistent and timed properly to
create the overall desired effect.
● The scene will be highly stylized and simple, in order to enhance the
wave of beautiful brides.
9. Sets (Solving Design Problems)
● Problems that could be encountered while designing the set could be
○ Making the scene look more realistic
○ Having visual ocean waves
○ Introducing the helicopter
○ Adding fireworks at the end of the play ( could use lights or sparks)
○ Both the fighting scenes and the blood visuals
10. Costumes (Style)
The style of the production “Big Love,” will be very much rich, whimsical and
modern. The women will be dressed in elegant lace and organza while the
men in soft colored suits displaying their posh and elaborate lifestyle.
11. Costumes (Historical Period)
Since the production will take place in Italy during the modern times, the
costumes will be very well polished and timeless. Representing the brides and
grooms of today. Additionally, the production is set along the ocean,
therefore the costumes will be flowy and breathable, enhancing the
effortless beauty of Italy.
12. Costumes (Nature of Women)
-Thyona is a very outspoken character; she will not stand by and allow anybody to take advantage of her. Therefore,
her costume will be very extravagant and flashy representing her unreserve personality.
-Lydia on the other hand is a smart and logical character that takes everything into account including her heart. So
Lydia’s costume will be a simple elegant gown.
-Olympia is the simplest of the three cousins, she has this belief that everything is a whimsical fantasy and has no
real voice. Her costume will be a delicate and fairy- like gown, exhibiting her quiet and vulnerable personality.
-Bella has a very wise and dominant personality, she's the mother of 13 children therefore her costume will be a light
colored skirt suit. The suit represents her alpha personality but the color will be a cream color showing her warm
motherly side.
-Eleanor is like Olympia where she has a certain picture of how the world is supposed to be and she doesn't mind it at
all. Therefore her attire will very simple.
14. Costumes (Nature of Men)
-Niko is the most understanding of the three cousins, he wants to marry Evelyn but doesn't want to
force her. Therefore his attire will consist navy blue suit, displaying his caring but determined
personality.
-Constantine like Thyona is very outspoken and will not let anything get in the way of what he
wants, his very dominant character will be wearing a very crisp white suit to display his social status
and headstrong self.
-Oed is a quiet character, who seems to just go along with what other people decide, so his attire
will be a pale pink suit to demonstrate his peaceful demeanor.
-Leo will be a funny man, but not extravagant since he is only a minor character, so he will wear a
traditional black suit.
-Piero is the owner of a manor, very prestigious and caring. He will be wearing a white and black
suit, displaying his caring but purposeful personality.
-Giuliano is Bella’s grandson, he wants to help the three cousins. Giuliano will also be gay therefore
he will be wearing a very chic costume.
16. Costumes (Character Relationships)
All the character in Big Love are wealthy, therefore they will all be dressed in
polished clothing. However, In order for the audience to distinguish the main
characters from the minor characters, the major characters will have more of
a extravagant design. Thyona, Evelyn and Olympia’s dresses will be long
beautiful gowns while Bella and Eleanor’s costume will be less flashy and
more simple.
17. Costumes (Symbols)
The costumes will all be elegant and refined demonstrating the characters
wealthy lifestyle. The girls will have headpieces and jewelry, and the men
will have watches to convey a sense of wealth.
18. Costumes (Costume Change)
Since there won't be much of any action, the girls don't require to have short wedding dresses.
However during the fight scene at the end, the women will be taking off their clothes so the dresses
will have a velcro closure on the sides that will be easy to take apart during the fight scene. And
the men’s suits will only have one button, thus it will be easier for them to rip their clothes off as
well.
19. Director
-Directorial Concept:
With the use of Lee’s original script, this interpretation of the play
“BIG Love,” will accurately depict the original motifs of the roles gender,
love and and violence play in society and the extent to which some will go in
order to live the life they want. Along with a strategically selected cast and
overall unexpected nature of the play, this rendition of ‘BIG Love” will leave
the audience in awe of how such dated themes are still very much relevant in
today’s society.
20. Director (Script)
Script: The original Charles
M. Lee script will be used in
this rendition of “BIG Love.”
With his comedic timing that
juxtaposes the serious
subject-matter, it all flows
effortlessly in a way that
needs little improvement to
relate to modern times.
21. Director
Casting-
Thyona- Jennifer Lawrence
Lydia- Amanda Seyfried
Olympia- Emma Stone
Niko- Leonardo DiCaprio
Constative- Jude Law
Oed- Channing Tatum
Leo & Eleanor- Kristen Wiig & Aziz Ansari
Piero & Bella- Ryan Reynolds & Jessica Lange
Giuliano- Neil Patrick Harris
22. Director (Spine & Theme)
Spine & Theme:
As the play progresses, we begin to see the ways gender roles and love shapes
each character’s role in the production. As each relationship is unwraveled
before us, the flaws in each story beings to reflect each woman's actions
whether she decided to escape from an arranged marriage or not. As the
theme of the play can vary from sexism, violence, and even rape it is all told
in a dark comedic manner that complements the setting and styling of the
play. With the setting and styling of the set of the play matching the essence
of each character confessing their baggage, all while the literal baggage
begins to acquire more and more space until all the stories are presented
before us as purpose for their future actions.
23. Lights
● Most of the play takes place on a shore of Italy, so for the lighting we will
use very bright lights to portray a beach setting.
● Other points in the play take place inside, which will require the lights to
also be bright but not as bright as they would be when the characters are
outside.
24. Lights (Visibility)
● The most important thing about the visibility of this play will be able to
show the audience the way the light affects the actors in the play, the
visibility will help the audience see the setting that the play takes place
in by the use of the set lights.
25. Lights (Shapes & Forms)
● One way the lights will help the audience further understand the play is
to help display the lights in a way that seems natural to the audience.
We will use lights that will help brighten up the stage to help portray the
plays environment, we will also use different forms of light fixtures to
help bring out the true light in the play.
26. Lights (Visual Compositions)
● With the use of lights, we want to create a story within the play, we
want not just the character's appearances on stage to mean something
and say something but also we want their actions to mean something
completely different, with lights the audience can easily see these
stories that take place within the play.
27. Lights (Mood & Reinforcing Style)
● A key component in the use of the lights for the play is for the lights to
set a mood during the play and to help the audience feel like they are
actually there. In many ways the lighting of the play can reinforce the
mood and the overall theme of the play.
28. Lights (Time & Place)
● Because the fact that most of the play takes place on a terrace facing a
beach most of the light during the play will be bright because of this.
The play takes place during modern times which ultimately does not
affect the overall lighting of the play.
29. Lights (Rhythm of Visual Movement)
● The lights put a big emphasis on the way the actors look while they are
performing actions up on the stage, the lights will help the audience see
what the actors are doing throughout the play and ultimately the right
lighting will help the play run much smoother, like its in rhythm with the
character's actions.
30. Lights (Central Visual Image)
● Overall we want the lights to ultimately bring the whole play together as
one,the main goal we have with the lights is to bring the play to life by
presenting the setting, props, actors and costumes and make them all
come to life as the lights shine on them.
