Big data approaches have some limitations when applied to social problems due to data often being unstructured and collected firsthand where each case is unique. However, big data can be useful for disaster relief by crowdsourcing data, for cancer research, and analyzing cell phone data to study malaria outbreaks. When addressing forest fires, big data allows leveraging available data to potentially solve issues, with California spending $280 million on forest fire budgets in 2014 dealing with over 92,000 acres burned.
