Patterns of Practice Assignment Instructions
Overview
For this series of assignments, you will independently focus on
one Pattern of Practice in four separate assignments. Each
Patterns of Practice assignment is completed separately. For
each assignment, you will create a unit plan based on each
pattern of practice. Chapter 12 is a culminating chapter
acknowledging the four patterns of practice. Use Chapter 12 as
a reference to understand and follow the specific steps for each
pattern of practice. Each assignment will be completed
according to the schedule below.

Literature Focus Units are defined as, “teachers and students
read and respond to one book.”

language arts with social studies, science, and other curricular
areas.” (such as other thematic topics, mathematics, health,
fitness, nutrition, music, or art).

Patterns of Practice: Literature Circles Assignment
Literature Circles are defined as “students read and discuss self-
selected books.”
Module 8: Week 8
Patterns of Practice: Reading or Writing Workshop
A Reading or Writing Workshop is defined as “students read
self-selected books independently and write compositions on
topics they’ve chosen.”
Instructions
How to Set up Patterns of Practice (PoP) Activities
1. Select appropriate literature for each PoP Assignment.
2. Select how to set up the unit plan. Using the template
provided, show what is included in each step of the PoP. Clearly
label all steps. Each PoP activity has different components that
you will include in the assignment. Review the specific steps in
the textbook and modules (labeled with each activity). You do
not write lesson plans for these activities; instead, you will
create a cluster, concept web, or chart to show what is included
in each step of the PoP.
3. Include quality children’s literature and state standards.
4. Address a minimum of one of the six language arts in the

7. assignment. Identify which language art is the focus. It can be
more than one language art.
5. Submit the assignment as one Microsoft Word document and
not multiple documents.
6. The template should not exceed two pages of content.

I. Patterns of Practice: Literature Focus Units Assignment
1. Select an award-winning book as the focus.
2. Select one of the six language arts to focus on for this unit.
3. Identify 3–4 language arts standards and grade level for this
unit.
4. Using the Patterns of Practice: Literature Focus Units
Template, create your literature focus unit by following the
seven steps below. Include a current APA-formatted references
page.

top of the chart, with each of the outside circles/boxes
representing the other steps.
II. Patterns of Practice: Thematic Unit Assignment
1. Choose a general topic and not a time period or historical
event; these are too broad. The goal is not to teach a collection
of facts, BUT to help students grapple with several big
understandings.
2. Select a text set of 3–5 titles, websites, or a combination of

literature circles.
4. Using the Patterns of Practice: Literature Circles Template,
create your literature circles unit by following the seven steps
below. It is not necessary to create documents for each
discussion role (called a “role sheet”). Include a current APA-
formatted references page.

Biblically Integrated Lesson Plan Assignment Instructions
1. Visit the Biblical Integration Lesson Plan Worksheet website
found on the Biblically Integrated Lesson Plan Assignment page
under Biblically Integrated Lesson Plan Resources and review
the concepts, instructions, and examples on how to write a
biblically integrated lesson plan.
2. In Microsoft Word, recreate your own version of the lesson

10. plan. It is strongly suggested you use this lesson plan template
found on the Biblically Integrated Lesson Plan Assignment page
under Biblically Integrated Lesson Plan Resources. Include all
of the information in the box at the top and all 7 of the sections
on the lesson plan. It does not have to look like the lesson plan
provided on the website; however all of the sections from the
website’s lesson plan worksheet must be present on your
version.
3. Complete your version of the lesson plan by selecting a
subject and specific middle school appropriate lesson content.
Provide background information such as subject area, grade
level, lesson content, and Virginia State Standards. Complete all
of the information on the lesson plan sheet including the
measurable objectives, assessments, and biblical integration
sections (steps 4–7). Do not just refer to principles but actually
reference specific Bible verses or passages that apply to your
lesson plan content. Ask questions and present ideas to help
integrate biblical priciples.
4. Do NOT use any of the examples or samples provided on the
site; create your own. Using the provided examples or samples
will result in a 0 grade for the assignment.
5. All objectives should be measurable, using the current LU
model.
6. Use Virginia State Standards, even if you live out of state.
You may also include your home state standards, if desired.
