1. Activity # 3: Biblical Interpretation
I would like to interpret the Biblical Story about The Prodigal Son (Luke 15: 11-32)
Biblical Story.
The story is about a father and his two sons. The youngest son asked the father for his share of the
estate. Without any protest, the father divided his property and gave the youngest son his share. The
youngest left. In turn, the youngest son then gathered everything together, he liquidated his entire
share into money. After the son collected all his money, he went to a foreign country and used his
money for evil, self-generous living. The money ran out, and food crisis overtook the foreign country. In
a desperate attempt to survive, the son offered his services to one of the citizens who commissioned
him to feed his pigs. While he fed the pigs, the son desired to eat their food because “no one was giving
him anything. In his forsaken condition, the son came to his senses and realized his father had enough
food for him to survive. The son went back home with the plan of asking his father to be hired as a
servant thinking he no longer had the right to be recognized as a son due to his reckless action. When
the father saw the son, he did the unimaginable—he received the son back with ecstatic joy and
celebration, and he ran to meet his son while he was still at a distance. The father kissed his son and
gave him three items of importance, the best robe, a ring, and sandals which the father himself placed it
on the son’s feet. In supplement to these items, the father ordered the fattened calf be killed for
celebration of his son returned. This situation prompted a negative reaction to the father older son. The
father invited the oldest son to join the celebration, but he refused. He felt cheated because he had
lived in obedience to the father, but never received any reward like his youngest brother. The father
then replied with tender words which conclude the parable, “My Son, you have always been with me,
and all that is mine is yours. But we had to celebrate and rejoice, for this brother of yours was dead and
has begun to live and was lost and has been found”.
My interpretation in the story.
The prodigal son is one of the best stories in the Bible. A story full of God mercy and grace. The father is
representing the Lord and the two sons representing the two kinds of people behavior in life. The story
shows the Lord readiness to welcome and bless all who return to him. It encouraged us in repenting and
returning to God. The wealth and pleasures will not satisfy our life and our soul. The best thing we can
do is to become servant of God and to look unto him our father will be the great use in our repentance
and return to him.
