3-2. Bionics–artificial skin & bionic ear
UK‘s Intercytex Group - Artificial skin - There is a company that challenges
regenerative medicine in synthetic or artificial biology. In 2007, the breakthrough
artificial skin has been developed, which is the same as natural skin and has no
immune-rejection when transplanting. Intercytex Group, a UK cell therapy company,
succeeded in the development of a prototype of artificial skin(ICX-SKN), which is fully
absorbed by the original skin tissue, thus the wound is restored neatly with little
scarring(skaːring)1). And they are now selling ICX-RHY(VAVELTA), which is an updated
version of it.
The researchers removed about 2.5㎠ of elliptical(ilíptikəl) skin around six healthy people,
and put the artificial skin on there, and found that the wound skin was restored to its
original state with little scarring after 28 days. As a result of microscopic observation of
the recovered wound, the artificial skin was completely absorbed by the original skin
and could hardly be distinguished from natural skin, and blood vessels were formed in
the artificial skin.

Most importantly, there is no immune-rejection of this artificial skin. Therefore,
the artificial skin has the most effective interaction with the natural skin than
any artificial skin in the past. Therefore, there is an evaluation that has made a
breakthrough in skin graft technology2).

Princeton University developed 3D Printed Bionic Ears - Let's take a look at
an example where biology and electronics meet with a 3D printer. 3D printed
Bionic Ear was born in 2013. It is a convergence of biology as tissue and
electronics as antenna with a 3D printer. This is called ‘the molecular revolution
of Flexonics’, it is bionics technology3).

Scientists at Princeton University have developed a functional ear as a bionic
ear, which goes far beyond the radio frequency range, 16 Hz to 20 kHz that
humans can hear, to ultrasound. The team developed bionic ears with a 3D
printer which feeds the cell and coil antenna through the cartridge.
Cybernetics4) is a science that enhances human ability. Recently, attention has
been focused on this field, and humans wearing these bionic ears are called
cyborgs5).

The examples of these bionic eye/ear/nose development cases are quite many,
but they are too early to be commercialized yet. The reason is that these have
to work as the actual function like seeing, hearing, and smelling, but this is not
easy. But scientists are looking to replace those parts of the human body with
bionic eye/ear/nose, and to create organs and organisms that go beyond
biologically human capabilities6).
