Part 1. Jesus came into the light and armed with the Holy Spirit, and His

3. What were Magi? Where was the east? How many wise scholars?
The task of figuring out the identity of the “Jesus Star", which led to the
arrival of the Magi from the east at the time of Jesus' birth, and of what
were Magi, it was a mystery to Christian astronomers for about 2,000
years.
First, who were Magi as the wise scholars or as some wise men from the
East or Greek ‘Magi’ appeared in <Chapter 2 of Matthew>, and which area
was the East?
Second, what was the star of the east, specifically the star of Jesus or His
star at that time? The star speaks of the sun in astronomical terms, but
which sun, which star, led the Magi from the east to Jerusalem(dʒərúːsələm) to
Bethlehem in Judea?
What were Magi? Where was the east?
How many wise scholars?

These two questions have harassed or tormented scholars. Among two, let
me start the first question, ‘What were Magi? Where was the east? How
many wise scholars?’ Before we go into more detail, let's look at <Matthew>.
Please read <Matthew 2:1> as follows:
<Matthew> 2:1 - 헤롯 왕 때에 예수께서 유대 베들레헴에서 나시매 동방으로
부터 박사들이 예루살렘에 이르러 말하되(After Jesus was born in, during the
time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem(NIV); Now
when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king,
behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,(KJV); Jesus was
born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. About that time
some wise men(1) from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, / (1)Or
royal astrologers; Greek reads magi; also in 2.7, 16(New Living); Jesus was
born in the town of Bethlehem in Judea, during the time when Herod was
king. Soon afterward, some men who studied the stars came from the East
to Jerusalem.(Good News)

Let's see the English Bible first. In the NIV, it described as Magi1), KJV as wise
men, and New Living as some wise men, and in the Commentary column of
New Living it is marked as the royal astrologers; Greek reads magi. And
Good News also refers to some men who studies the stars.
In summarizing, we can know that Magi were ultimately high royal
astronomers or astrologers from English Bible.
The term Magi is derived from ‘magos’ of ancient Greek, plural of ‘magus’ of
Latin, and is derived from ancient Persian ‘maguš’, often translated as 'wise
man' into English. It means followers of Zoroastrianism(zɔ̀ːrouǽstriənìzm)2) from
the 6th century BC or Zoroaster(BC 660-BC 583) who founded the
Zoroastrianism.

The area called Magi was Media(Median, Medes, 'Medes' in the Bible)3)
located in the northwestern of Persia(today’s Iran), where Zoroaster was
born. At one time Median Empire(c.BC 678-BC 549) entered the area of
Medes, and its capital was Ecbatana(Ekbatana, ‘Ecbatana’ in the Bible, today’s
'Hamadan‘ of Iran). Then, in the Hellenistic(hèlənístik) period(BC 323-BC 30),
Magi referred specifically to astronomers with the ability to read the
stars and the ability to predict the fate of stars.
According to Wikipedia4), Magi traditionally refers to the Persian empire,
especially the Parthian(pάːrθiən) empire(BC 247-AD 224)5) at the time of
Jesus' birth.
To sum it up, Magi could be summarized as the royalty believed in
Zoroastrianism, and astronomers who were particularly astrologers
among the high priests of the God from Media.

So how many Magi or wise men? In other literature6), three people are
listed, why? In <Matthew 2:11>, ‘they’ means plural, and ‘they’ as Magi
bowed down and worshiped the baby Jesus, and then they open their
treasures, offered gold, incense, and myrrh. So we can interpret this as: they
gave the baby Jesus one each, and in the end, they gave three different gifts
from each other, so it is interpreted as three wise men.
