What are archives? Unique material Generated by an organisation, business or individual and preserved for long-term access An archive collection is identified as being  created by a particular person, family, or organisation in the course of their activities  Collections vary widely in size and content
Types of repository Type of archive material Repository relate to their collecting area, often varied Library relate to their collecting area, often varied Museum relate to the charity – people, land, buildings Charity archive relate to the business activities – also people, land, buildings Business archive music, architecture, film, etc.  Specialist record office history of the institution, researchers and research, land and buildings, local businesses, specialist areas Universities, colleges geographical – local businesses, estates, people, places, genealogical, diocesan, parish, maps Local record office government National record office
