Bias can develop into a stereotype, which is an overgeneralized assumption about a group. Prejudice refers to attitudes about groups, often linked to stereotypes. Discrimination involves unfair treatment of those perceived as members of a social group. The document reflects on how stereotypes are acquired and maintained, their impact on mental health, and the psychology of discriminators.
2. Bias and Stereotype
Bias
Bias is a term used to describe a tendency or preference towards a particular perspective,
ideology or result, especially when the tendency interferes with the ability to be impartial,
unprejudiced, or objective.Bias is an opinion formed about someone or something, based on one’s
own perception of that person or thing. Bias can develop into a stereotype, but not necessarily.
Someone may have a bias against someone from another country without being aware of it, but
they can become aware of that bias and change it into a more positive opinion if they choose to do
so.
Stereotype
A stereotype is a preconceived idea that attributes certain characteristics to all the members of a
class or set. The term is often used with a negative connotation when referring to an
oversimplified, exaggerated, or demeaning assumption. Stereotype is our overgeneralization about
a group of people based on shared characteristics.
3. The benefits of stereotypes
Differences in the tendency to stereotype
The problems with stereotypes - Arbitrary, Socially constructed,
Biased, lead to Prejudice and discrimination.
5. Prejudice refers to our feelings or attitudes about a group and its members. Prejudice
is commonly associated with stereotypes; our evaluations of others reflect what we
believe to be true about them.
Discrimination refers to differential (usually unfair or negative) treatment of
individuals perceived to be belonging to a particular social group; for example, being
overlooked in promotion or hiring, or being treated with hostility. Discrimination is
linked to stereotypes and prejudice. Strong egalitarian social norms, however, might
deter a prejudiced person from acting in a discriminatory manner.
