and excitement for all readers but especially for
readers who struggle. Appointments can be made

Flat Stanley Meets our Local Merchants and Library Supporters

Come to the Library and play a game of Wii bowling then enter your
score on the leader board. The person with the highest score at the end
of the tournament goes home with a trophy. There will be a trophy for
kids in Grades K-2 and another for Grades 3-6.
Pillowcase Game
Families, Grades K-6
Friday, April 18 at 11:00 a.m. sharp
Fill a pillowcase with anything that you think might end up on our list of
things you find in your home. Examples would be shoelace, flashlight,
toothbrush, comb, granola bar, rubber duck etc. If the items you have
match the items on our list you get a point. The family with the most
points wins two large pizzas from Ragtime Pizza.

BOATER’S SAFETY COURSE
Food For Fines!
Saturday, April 12 OR
Saturday, May 17, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
April 1 – 30
Run by the Coast Guard Auxiliary, this
course satisfies Suffolk County
requirements and the certificate will
not expire. A fee of $30 per patron
covers all study materials including
completion certificate and proof card
needed to submit to N.Y.S. with your
boating license application. Boaters 10
years of age and older may register for this program. Payment will be
collected, in the form of a check, at the start of the program.
Registration begins Monday, March 3.
The Food for Fines program is back
and ready to provide assistance to
our local food pantries. From April 1
through April 30, we will forgive up
to $1.00 in overdue fines for each
non-perishable food item you bring in. Some restrictions will apply. No fines? No problem! We are happy
to accept food donations from one and all.
SPRING CLEANING: SHED THE MEDS
AND SHREDDING EVENT
Saturday, March 22, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Welcome spring by ridding your home of old medicines and paperwork clutter!
The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office will be here to collect unused medications
and covered hypodermic needles. Proper disposal is essential to protect the
environment, and ensure that old prescriptions do not end up in the wrong hands.
Smart Shred will also be here, with their state of the art mobile shred center, to
safely shred your personal documents. Stop by the Library anytime between
10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. to drop off your unwanted meds and shred your
unwanted documents.

Long Island Reads is an Island–wide reading initiative.
Each spring, people in Nassau and Suffolk Counties
come together to read the same book, participate in
discussions of the selection and enjoy related events in
public libraries. The Brookhaven Free Library has complimentary copies of this year’s selection, The Manor:
Three Centuries at a Slave Plantation on Long Island by
Mac Griswold, for the first 20 patrons to sign up for the
discussion, to be held on April 8.

will be greeted by the Library representative, on the
platform, at the first car. Return tickets for any train
leaving Penn Station on that same day will be given to
you when you board the train at Ronkonkoma. There

Registration is required for most adult programs. Brookhaven Free Library card holders may register in

NEW YORK DRIVER’S SAFETY COURSE
Saturday, March 22, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
A representative from Empire Safety Council will
be here to present their six hour class, recognized
by all New York State insurance companies, which
can help you reduce your auto collision and liability insurance rates by 10%. If you have incurred violations during the 18 month period prior to completing the course, up to 4 points will automatically be reduced on your driving record. There is no
formal exam. A fee of $27 will be collected at registration. Please make checks payable to “Empire
Safety Council”. Please note that a minimum of 10
registered patrons is required for this program.

All over the United States families are excited to give their children a leg up on literacy by
committing to read 1000 Books before Kindergarten. It is not that hard to reach this goal and
the benefits are priceless. We promise to cheer you on all the way with applause and prizes each
time you read 100 books. Families can track their progress on our
permanent display and our 1000 Books before Kindergarten web page.
Finally, each year during National Library Week you will be invited to
a special awards ceremony where those who have completed the
program will be honored.
Please sign up and join us at our Kick-Off Party April 19 from
11:00 a.m.- 12:00 noon. We will have music and refreshments for
all to enjoy.
