The purpose of our paper is to share the experiences of DCPL’s pilot digital skills project, based in inner city Dublin, and to show that it is possible to establish a digital skills project which is consciously inclusive and can accommodate children and young people with differing learning abilities as well as different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
The national strategy Our Public Libraries 2022 emphasises the role that libraries can play in bridging the digital divide in Ireland. Libraries are ideally placed to deliver the necessary digital skills and to access the technology that is imperative for participation in the digital society.
In terms of the outreach activities, we identified the CoderDojo model as being the most suitable method of delivering digital skills to a diverse group on an on-going basis. We work with DEIS schools and community groups, such as those who work with children in direct provision, to recruit participants for whom the experience would be most beneficial and empowering. By providing a familiar space within the area, the aim is to make digital learning accessible and welcoming.
We consciously cultivate a family-friendly environment for our Saturday “Dojo”, encouraging accompanying parents to make use of the library’s facilities and bring along younger siblings. For our mid-week, “Teen Dojo”, teens are introduced to project-based work, where outputs include tangible results, which keep teens engaged as what is being learned has ‘real world’ applications.
Our experience with respect to the learning approaches used and the communities’ reception to the providing of digital learning opportunities to children in areas with diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds has multiple implications, including what value can be found in self-directed learning with this particular cohort and what benefits that exposing these children to the skills necessary for the future of work can be had.

The University of Edinburgh’s (UoE) Information Services Group (ISG) has developed a Playful Engagement strategy, utilising playfulness to create interest, boost attendance, and encourage interaction with its services and activities. We target appropriate workplace learning opportunities which support our strategic priorities in developing digital skills, engaging with open educational practices, promoting diverse role models and using
our collections in innovative ways.
Activities have been designed to:
• model good practice
• re-use existing designs
• stimulate social learning
• focus on authentic tasks with tangible outcomes
• support reporting on staff engagement.
This workshop will present our approach, providing opportunities for delegates to experience and reflect on examples of our playful engagement activities. Each activity will be set up in a separate area of the room, with information about the activity and its use in ISG provided to the group. Case studies (which you can take away with you) highlight how we have aligned our activities to University strategic aims while also utilising the full potential of gamification, friendly competition, use of metadata, a focus on facts, makers and sharers, third wave feminism, Dolly the sheep, and copious baked goods. ABC High School is a private college that delivers education to students from years’ 8 to 12. The campus sits on approximately 5 hectares of manicured grounds, 6 kilometres from the CBD of Adelaide. It consists of a large two-story building containing the majority of the classrooms (22) and administration offices, a dedicated music and arts suite with two classrooms, a resource centre, and an indoor gymnasium containing two full sized basketball courts. There is also a large outdoor oval, tennis courts and practice cricket nets.
The school has a modern approach to education and focuses on the use of technology in the classroom. All students have their own iPads and are used daily in a variety of subjects including science and maths. These are connected to the schools’ wireless network which has recently been upgraded to cover the majority of the campus and support the device density in each classroom. In addition there are 2 purpose built computer rooms located in the resource centre containing 30 modern PCs each, and 4 trolleys of 40 wireless laptops which can be borrowed on an adhoc basis for classroom use. The students also have access to 6 printers and photocopies located throughout the campus.
The campus network has just undergone a major refresh which includes a replacement of all existing networking hardware, excluding wireless. The new network delivers 10Gb interconnects and 1Gb to all end devices though a combination of both OM1 and OM3 fibre for vertical cabling and CAT5e and CAT6 for horizontal cabling. The schools’ WAN has also just been upgraded from a 20Mbps to 100Mbps to support the increased traffic due to the iPad usage. Both the logical and physical diagrams have been included in this case study for your reference and should be accurate and reflect the recent changes.
The school currently has a 10 year old PBX connection which is becoming ever difficult to upgrade and maintain. It currently consists of the following components:
- 1 x Ericsson 50 PBX
- 1 x Reception handset that provides the ability for call forwarding, call holding, directory lookup and night mode.
- 30 x basic desktop phones with caller ID
- 6 x wireless antennas with school building and courtyard coverage for 4 cordless phones
- 10 x external lines bound to 1 incoming number (Reception)
- 10 x external line bound to 1 incoming number (Management x 5, IT administrator, Finance, Canteen, Gym, Resource Centre)
- Incoming calls are supplied via an E1 connection from a telco.
As the school wishes to install handsets in each classroom, the current PBX does not have the handset capacity. This combined with the age of the current PBX, it has approved the finance and installation of a VoIP solution to be rolled out throughout the school.

In addition there are 2 purpose built computer rooms located in the resource centre containing 30 modern PCs each, and 4 trolleys of 40 wireless laptops which can be borrowed on an adhoc basis for classroom use. The students also have access to 6 printers and photocopies located throughout the campus.
The campus network has just undergone a major refresh which includes a replacement of all existing networking hardware, excluding wireless. The new network delivers 10Gb interconnects and 1Gb to all end devices though a combination of both OM1 and OM3 fibre for vertical cabling and CAT5e and CAT6 for horizontal cabling. The schools’ WAN has also just been upgraded from a 20Mbps to 100Mbps to support the increased traffic due to the iPad usage. Both the logical and physical diagrams have been included in this case study for your reference and should be accurate and reflect the recent changes.
The school currently has a 10 year old PBX connection which is becoming ever difficult to upgrade and maintain. It currently consists of the following components:
- 1 x Ericsson 50 PBX
- 1 x Reception handset that provides the ability for call forwarding, call holding, directory lookup and night mode.
- 30 x basic desktop phones with caller ID
- 6 x wireless antennas with school building and courtyard coverage for 4 cordless phones
- 10 x external lines bound to 1 incoming number (Reception)
- 10 x external line bound to 1 incoming number (Management x 5, IT administrator, Finance, Canteen, Gym, Resource Centre)
- Incoming calls are supplied via an E1 connection from a telco.
As the school wishes to install handsets in each classroom, the current PBX does not have the handset capacity. This combined with the age of the current PBX, it has approved the finance and installation of a VoIP solution to be rolled out throughout the school.
