2. The Criterion – Greenwich, CT
I first experienced this theater with Wes
Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel”.
It was the perfect date movie and the
Criterion was the perfect setting. My date
and I saw the film in a huge theater with
ample seating. The sound quality was
great there and the picture was
immaculate.
3. The Avon Theater – Stamford, CT
This theater had existed all of my life in Stamford. Yet, for
15 years I had eluded it. It always looked so mysterious and
classy. I was partly intimidated by its grandeur, and by its
ticket prices. However, in May of 2013, I went with a couple
of friends to see “The Place Beyond the Pines.” That film
changed my life. It was totally worth spending $2 extra to
see it.
Since then, I have seen many movies there, and each one
has been a blast. I visit this theater more than any other in
my area. It’s beautiful.
4. Garden Cinema – Norwalk, CT
Late last summer, Bong Joon-
Ho’s “Snowpiercer” was
released. Aside from its stint at
a festival in New York, this was
the only place it opened.
It looked shabby on the out
and inside. But I was attracted
to that. The ceilings were low,
the attendants were haggard,
and the seats were smelly. But
the film was a blast and it was
quality image and sound.
5. Angelika Film Center – New York, NY
I have only seen two movies here, but they
were both astounding experiences. The
theater is located on Houston Street in
Downtown Manhattan. It couldn’t be
situated in a nicer spot, and the inside
couldn’t be more spacious and awe-
inspiring.
In early October of 2014, I saw “Birdman”.
It was only showing there and I rushed to
go see it. The second film was “Inherent
Vice”, which I saw in 35mm. To hear the
flicker of the film and see the raw grain of
the image changed me for sure.
6. The IFC Center– New York, NY
The IFC Center. This is the place you go after
your night on the town. There are all sorts of
freaks and geeks that dwell there. It’s wonderful.
I once walked out, at 3 a.m., from a showing of
Alejandro Jodorowsky’s “The Holy Mountain”
and had a conversation about the film with a
man who wore a full bunny costume to the
showing. We arrived at profound conclusions
about human nature. It was good,
Also, the seating is just fine and the pic and
sound quality is superb.
