Abandoned bikes - The University of Melbourne
Melbourne University has over 2,500 bicycles used each weekday for campus transportation. However, some bikes are abandoned and left unused. The university partners with local organizations to donate these abandoned bikes for community programs. Hotham Mission receives bikes to teach disadvantaged children social and life skills through bicycling. Wheel Power provides refugees and migrants with free bikes for transportation, freedom, and volunteer opportunities. There is potential to expand these donation programs in the future to benefit more community groups while providing good publicity for the university.

My keynote presentation for Future Dem 10 showing politicians, police, councillors, mayors and decision-makers engaged with their communities in ways some people may find quite unexpected. Digital technologies afford new and different approaches to old problems such as anti-social behavior, postindustrial decline and regeneration. However, to achieve digital inclusion we have to consider digital relevance and promote digital enthusiasm.
Democracy works best when communities engage their elected representatives, not just the other way round. In showing the unexpected, I hope I may challenge some of the preconceived ideas about engagement and inclusion and invite people to consider new approaches.

- 1. Presented by Peter Smith & Daniel Wood
- 2. The bigger group, Benfield Disability Forum, will be open to ideas from the full membership. The elected committee will work with the School Council and the Newcastle Children’s Rights Team, in particular Emma Rogan and Kat Walker.
- 3. We want this group to be where all of us feel we have a voice. Emma and Kat will support our groups.
- 5. We will gather the views of young disabled pupils about school and public life. We will feedback to the: School Council and the Newcastle Children’s Rights Team; they will help us to put our views into action.
- 6. We will meet every half term on a different day of the week and during a different lesson.
