The World
Of
Dinosaurs
P48 physique relizane www.physique48.org
Life began on Earth about three billion years ago. The first living things were tiny
boneless animals that lived in the sea, and over the course of millions of years, these
first animals developed and have become adapted to live in all parts of the world.
Almost 600 million years ago, the invertebrates: insects and mini beasts appeared. The
earliest vertebrates were in the form of fish and appeared around 500 million years
ago. From these, all the other amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals descended.
Dinosaurs were one of the several kinds of prehistoric reptiles that appeared on
Earth about 230 million years ago during the “Mesozoic Era”, (The Age of Reptiles).
There were about 330 species of dinosaurs: some were herbivores (plant eaters) and
some were carnivores (meat eaters). Some walked on two legs while others walked on
four legs. The largest dinosaur such as “Bruhathkayosaurus” was 40m long and up to
15m tall. The smallest dinosaurs like “Compsognathus” were about the size of a
chicken. The most dangerous dinosaur was Tyrannosaurus Rex (meat eater).
When dinosaurs first appeared, planet Earth was different than it is now: the
continents were joined together into a super continent called “Pangaea”. The weather
was warmer, the seasons were mild and the sea level was higher. There were plenty of
trees and plants.
For a long time, people didn’t know anything about dinosaurs until a man called
William Buckland found the first fossil of a dinosaur in 1819 in England. In 1914,
the English anatomist, Sir Richard Owen came up with the word “Dinosaur” which
means “Big Scary Lizard”.
Dinosaurs are extinct. No one is quite sure exactly why these amazing creatures
mysteriously disappeared. Scientists have different theories. Many think that 65
million years ago at the end of the “Cretaceous Era”, an asteroid hit planet Earth and
caused great climatic changes to which dinosaurs couldn’t adapt. Others think that a
kind of virus caused fatal diseases that killed all the dinosaurs off.

are very much inspired by these gigantic creatures.
After watching “King Kong vs T Rex” the movie, some young children have asked you
to tell them about the deadliest of all dinosaurs “T Rex”. Write a short article about
this dinosaur and publish it on a school magazine.
These information may be useful

Situation Four
You had the opportunity to visit a museum where you could see a
real dinosaur’s fossil. You took pictures and collected some
information.
Use the information to write a letter to your friend in which you
describe your visit to a dinosaur museum
Write about:
-Date of your visit: last month / go / London Natural History
Museum
-Location: Cromwell Road
-Different sections in the museum: dinosaur library area /

The World of Dinosaurs

  • 1. The World Of Dinosaurs P48 physique relizane www.physique48.org
  • 2. Life began on Earth about three billion years ago. The first living things were tiny boneless animals that lived in the sea, and over the course of millions of years, these first animals developed and have become adapted to live in all parts of the world. Almost 600 million years ago, the invertebrates: insects and mini beasts appeared. The earliest vertebrates were in the form of fish and appeared around 500 million years ago. From these, all the other amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals descended. Dinosaurs were one of the several kinds of prehistoric reptiles that appeared on Earth about 230 million years ago during the “Mesozoic Era”, (The Age of Reptiles). There were about 330 species of dinosaurs: some were herbivores (plant eaters) and some were carnivores (meat eaters). Some walked on two legs while others walked on four legs. The largest dinosaur such as “Bruhathkayosaurus” was 40m long and up to 15m tall. The smallest dinosaurs like “Compsognathus” were about the size of a chicken. The most dangerous dinosaur was Tyrannosaurus Rex (meat eater). When dinosaurs first appeared, planet Earth was different than it is now: the continents were joined together into a super continent called “Pangaea”. The weather was warmer, the seasons were mild and the sea level was higher. There were plenty of trees and plants. For a long time, people didn’t know anything about dinosaurs until a man called William Buckland found the first fossil of a dinosaur in 1819 in England. In 1914, the English anatomist, Sir Richard Owen came up with the word “Dinosaur” which means “Big Scary Lizard”. Dinosaurs are extinct. No one is quite sure exactly why these amazing creatures mysteriously disappeared. Scientists have different theories. Many think that 65 million years ago at the end of the “Cretaceous Era”, an asteroid hit planet Earth and caused great climatic changes to which dinosaurs couldn’t adapt. Others think that a kind of virus caused fatal diseases that killed all the dinosaurs off.
