Chinese college entrance exam
Makayla Strode, Abby Vaughn,
Timmy Lutz, Layton Garrett
In our short story, Beef Stew, Chou (the main character) failed his
college entrance exam
Also in our story Chou’s parents and grandparents failed their exam
also
This standardized test is pretty much the only thing that matters when
it comes to determining whether or not you can go to college
College admission is based almost entirely on exam scores (even
your high school grades don’t really matter)
• The GaoKao is 2.5 times as long as the S.A.T.
• In total this exam is 18 hours long (on average the S.A.T. is 3 hours 45
minuets long)
• It can take up to 2 weeks to grade
(remember to do your best the
first time because there are NO
RETAKES )
 Chinese students prepare for this moment their entire high school
careers and in some cases their entire life.
 Everyone participates during the exam times
I. You had to have a local residency (if you did not you would have to
travel to wherever your household was registered to take the exam
there)
II. You must graduate high school to take this exam
1) You do not have to travel home ( you can take this exam wherever you
are)
This research has given us a better understanding and appertain of our
short story because now we know why Chou was so devastated when
he fond out that he failed his exam. We know that it is the reason he had
to work in a butcher shop.
Do you think you could pass?
